Abstract

PURPOSE: To realize the fluorescent display device of low power consumption by obtaining the material which is a liquid crystal material forming cholesteric phase at room temperature and yet is capable of efficiently exciting fluorescent seeds.
CONSTITUTION: A transparent substrate 2 provided with a transparent surface electrode 1 and a back substrate 4 provided with back electrodes 5 at least one whereof is composed of a reflecting material constitute a case together with a sealing material 3. Liquid crystal molecule orientation layers 7, 8 are provided on the electrodes 1, 5. Cholesteric liquid crystal material 6 of the formula (R is n-C3H7-, n-C5H11-, n-C7H15-) having positive dielectric anisotropy containing dichromatic absorptive fluorescent seeds 8 such as anthracene is filled in said case. When the field vibrating direction of incident excitation light 9 is in the long axis direction of the fluorescent seeds 8, the fluorescent seeds 8 emit fluorescence 10. When a voltage is applied from an a.c. power source 12 to the electrodes 1, 5 via switch 11, the material orients perpendicularly and the fluorescent seeds 8 do not emit fluorescence
