Abstract
PURPOSE:To enhance welding efficiency of laser welding, a combination welding of TIG torch and laser beam is used such that the laser follows after a molten pool caused by the TIG electrode. CONSTITUTION:A laser beam 11 is emitted from a laser generator 1, reflected from a mirror 12 and projected to a location close to TIG electrode 12, then passes through a hole 13 provided on top wall of a nozzle 4. In welding operaion, a base material 9 is moved as indicated by an a-arrow, relative to the apparatus so that the laser 11 follows after TIG electrode 5 and impinges into a shallow pool 5' molten by TIG electrode 5. This causes, due to reduced laser reflection, substantial absorption of laser energy by the molten pool 5', resulting in a deep metling penetration in the base material useful for efficient welding or cutting. In addition, a laser molten pool, 11' is enclosed by the nozzle 4 and shielded by a innert gas jetted from an opening 7, whereby the welding zone is effectively protected from oxidation and nitrization.
