Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a locomotive driving mechanism, which is capable of preventing that overload is acted due to failing of engagement between gear wheels and rack rails, by idling the gear wheels by means of a slide coupling disposed between a differential gear unit and the gear wheels.
CONSTITUTION: If an excessively high load is acted, for instance, due to failing of engagement between gear wheels and rack rails at the time of entering into a rack rail region, clutch 29 with slide coupling comes out of engagement with gear 28, so that driving power is not transmitted to the gear wheels but they are engaged with rack rails after idling. In order to drive the locomotive in the rack rail region, clutch 26 is used in place of clutch 29 after confirming that engagement between gear wheels and rack rails. As the result, clutch 26 comes into engagement with gear 25 but clutch 29 comes out of engagement with gear 28, so that driving power of output shaft 16 is transmitted to adhesive wheels and driving power of output shaft 17 is transmitted to the gear wheels.
