Abstract

PURPOSE: To damp the impact applied to a valve seat by a valve belonging to a valve lift varying mechanism and prevent noises and the damage of the valve seat, by providing a hydraulic damper over a rocker arm.
CONSTITUTION: The hydraulic damper 41 is so formed that a plunger 47 is thrusted downward in an oil chamber 45 provided in a bracket 43 attached to a head 1. The oil chamber 54 is connected to an oil pressure source through a check valve 51. The rocker arm 15 pushes the plunger 47 through a buffer 53 just before a valve element 7a is seated with the rising of the rocker arm 15. Thus, the impact of the valve 7a and the rocker arm 15 is absorbed by the hydraulic damper 41. As a result, the valve element is prevented by the damper 41 from being impulsively seated by the valve lift varying mechanism.
