Abstract

PURPOSE: To raise the natural frequency of a valve lift varying mechanism employing a hydraulic tappet and prevent noises, by providing in an oil pressure chamber a spring for applying a force to a check valve to reduce the volume of a pressure chamber.
CONSTITUTION: The vibration of a spring system is generally represented as f= {(K1+K2).g/w}1/2/2π where K1 and K2 denote spring constants. Therefore, f is increased by raising K2 if K1 and w are constant. The check valve 57 having a conical face is thrusted upward by the tension spring 59 provided in the oil chamber 53b so that the conical face is fitted on a valve seat. Because the spring 59 is placed in the oil chamber 53b, the volume of the pressure chamber 51b is thoroughly reduced. Thus, the natural frequency of the vibration system including the hydraulic tappet and an intake valve is increased and noises are prevented.
