PURPOSE:When wearing speed of work piece at precision machining increases more than setting wearing speed, characteristics change of grinding stone surface is detected. By doing so, aforesaid change of grinding stone can be detected in due time for periodical dressing operation. CONSTITUTION:When cutting performance of a grinding stone 4 lowers, a workpiece W deflects in rough grinding and time for precision grinding falls to t1 or less than t1 by the influence of this defection. In this case, pulse number to be counted between an output signal AS1 and AS2 emitted from a determined dimension device 11, remains less than setting value which is previously set to a digital switch 27 and so in the emitting point of the output signal AS2, the characteristics change signal of grinding stone surface is output from a comparatice circuit 28. A dressing head 14 moves reciprocately by means of this signal for dressing operation of the grinding stone 4.
