Abstract
PURPOSE: To achieve the perpendicularity of polished end face at high precision, by providing posture adjusting screws on a tape adjusting table, and rotating the optical fiber in reciprocal movement.
CONSTITUTION: Adjusting screws 15, 16 are incorporated in a tape adjusting table 14 on which a tape for polishing 3 is secured, and a collet chuck 13 with gear 8 is fitted to a second slide table 7 placed on a first slide table 6, and the gear 8 is engaged with a rack 9 which is affixed to a base 17. By so costituting, the posture of the tape adjusting table 14 is adjusted by the adjusting screws 15, 16, and the abrasive coated face of the tape for polishing 3 is set parallel to the end face of an optical fiber 1 secured to the collet chuck 13. The second slide table 7 is moved back and forth by a pressurizing device 11 through release 12, so that the end face of the optical fiber 1 is pressed against the abrasive coated face with a proper pressure. Then, by reciprocating the first slide table 6 by means of a driving cylinder 10, the optical fiber 1 is moved reciprocally while turning, and the end face thereof may be polished squarely in the axial direction at high precision.
