Abstract

PURPOSE:To selectively and optically couple only the non-defectives of a plurality of light emitting elements formed on a wafer to photo detectors with a simple constitution by providing directional couplers at the point of intersections of perpendicularly intersecting optical quides thereby causing optical coupling. CONSTITUTION:Perpendicularly intersecting optical guides 1 thru 8 of specified values in width and thickness are provided in mesh form to a glass substrate such as of F2 of specified refractive indices. If L-form wave guides 9 thru 11 of a specified width, thickness and refrative index are provided at specified intervals from the wave guides 1 thru 8 on one side of the point of intersections of these wave quides 1 thru 8, the wave guides 1 thru 5 and 6 thru 8 are 100%-power-coupled. Hence, selective photo coupling of the optical fibers 18 thru 20 coupling to the wave quides 6 thru 8 and only the non-defectives out of a multiplicity of light emitting diode elements 12 thru 16 such as GaP or other provided to a wafer 17 may be readily and surely accomplished with the simple constitution.
