Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a slag cut material for discharge of steel which material is granules contg. Al2O3 and MgO as principal components and shows a superior effect on slag of medium carbon SC steel and low carbon steel.
CONSTITUTION: The slag cut material contains more than 50, pref. more than 70 wt% of Al2O3 and/or MgO. At a suitable period immediately after discharge of steel and immediately before completion of the discharge, granular slag cut material 8 is charged into slag 5 right above tap hole 3 from projector 7, etc. Material 8 pushes slag 5 away, forming block 9. Slag 5 around block 9 is partially solidified or made viscous by the cooling effect of material 8, and it promotes formation of block 9 to prevent slag 5 from flowing down. The Al2O3 and MgO in material 8 are of high m.p., hardly react with slag on molten low carbon steel, and has low wettability, resulting in a superior slag cut effect.
