Abstract

PURPOSE: To form a slag excellent in the insulating effect at a low cost free from poisonous gas by using waste high alumina refractories for a slag forming agent to be used in the reduction period for making steel with electric furnaces.
CONSTITUTION: When steel is refined with an Heroult electric furnace, CaO is fed to form a slag for reduction period and subsequently, used high alumina refractories crushed is fed together with powdered coal and A1 shavings. This enable the formation of a reduction slag dispensing with fluorite and costly SiC previously used. As compared with the conventional method using the fluorite, S, O, N and H as impurities are reduced thereby improving the cleanliness while eliminating fluoric gas. The slag turns to a bubble state immediately after it is cooled from the glowing state, thus improving the insulating effect.
