BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Liquid crystal shutters are useful in a variety of applications involving the transmission of light through a hole, in which case the shutter can be switched between a transparent or bright low light absorption state and a dark high light absorption state. It has become. By combining a layer or cell of liquid crystal molecules that can be aligned by an electrical effect with a polarizing filter, the transmittance of the liquid crystal shutter structure is varied in response to a change in the electrical effect. In this regard, state-of-the-art liquid crystal cells consist of liquid crystal molecules sandwiched between two glass plates. The plates have surfaces facing each other, each of which is provided with an alignment means for determining the molecular alignment direction for molecules in the vicinity of the alignment means in the absence of an electric field. These alignment means include a plate surface portion having a physical surface morphology that cooperates with the morphology of liquid crystal molecules when no electric field is present. This can be achieved by treating the surface of the glass plate in a uniform direction, since the liquid crystal molecules near such a surface tend to be arranged in parallel with the treatment direction. For example, the surface may be grooved. By twisting the glass plates together so that the processing directions are not parallel, a spiral structure of liquid crystal molecules is formed between the glass plates. For example, a standard 90 ° twisted nematic (TN) cell has mutually facing surfaces formed with a 90 ° twist angle between the molecular orientations of the glass plates. A smaller twist angle is described in the simultaneously filed but not yet published patent application SE940423-0 and the corresponding PCT / SE95 / 00455. The liquid crystal-type molecules used have an intrinsic dielectric anisotropy and can therefore be totally aligned by applying an electric field having a voltage greater than the cell-specific threshold. The helical structure of the cell then breaks down, and instead the liquid crystal molecules are oriented according to the electric field. The transmission density of such a cell assembly when placed between polarizers can be controlled by varying the applied electric field. When such a liquid crystal cell is placed between crossed polarizers, in the absence of an excitation voltage, the cell structure is said to have a large transmission and to have a normal white mode. In contrast, placing the cell between the parallel polarizers results in a cell structure with low transmission in the absence of an excitation voltage, and is usually referred to as having a black mode. A device having a high transmittance means that the intensity of light passing through the device is reduced only slightly. High transmittance can also be referred to as low optical density or low shade number. Conversely, devices with low transmission can be described as having high optical density and high light blocking number. The optical density is conventionally defined by the following equation. D = 1 + 7/3 × 10 log (I / T) (where T is the transmission coefficient). In particular, a state-of-the-art shutter of the type described above may be used to detect an eye, such as an automatically darkening welding shielding glass, in which the welding glass is activated and darkened in response to the detected welding light. When applied as a light filter in a protective device, it is important for stability reasons to ensure that the fastest possible response time from a bright state to a dark state is achieved. Basically, the operation of a liquid crystal cell involves two switching times. The first involves switching the cell from an inactive state to an activated state by application of a drive voltage, and the time for the liquid crystal to react therewith is typically less than milliseconds. The second switching time occurs in connection with the reverse process where crystal relaxation occurs when the drive voltage is removed and takes about 20 times longer. Therefore, for shutters that require a very fast switching time from a bright state to a dark state, it is common to use liquid crystal cells that are normally in white mode. However, modern shutters, usually in white mode, have the disadvantage that they remain in a potentially dangerous bright state if the drive electronics fail and cannot deliver the drive voltage for some reason. According to the prior art, this problem can usually be mitigated by using cells in the black mode, but then at the expense of the switching speed from the bright state to the dark protection state. Therefore, this is not a satisfactory solution. If the welding shield glass has a long switching time from a bright state to a dark state, the person using the welding shield is literally exposed to high intensity light for a long time after the welding operation starts. Become. European Standard EN169: 1992 "Personal Eye Protection-Filters for Welding and Related Techniques-Transmittance Requirements and Recommended Utilisation" It is defined that the maximum allowable difference between the activated state and the dark welding state is 9 or less in several steps of light shielding. For example, a welding filter that has 13 light shields in a dark state cannot be brighter than 4 light shields in an inactive state. In order to give the user sufficient light intensity before starting the welding operation, known methods have been developed for automatically darkening welding filters which provide a number of shades in the range of 3 in the bright state. Thus, instead, there is the problem of achieving a well-shielded dark state. [Disclosure of the Invention] An object of the present invention is to solve the above-mentioned problems. The present invention also relates to the problem of achieving a liquid crystal shutter that provides a sufficiently bright state in the absence of intense light, yet provides a sufficiently dark state in the presence of intense light. Yet another problem solved by the present invention, an object of the present invention, is to achieve a liquid crystal shutter that has a large optical density value (ie, the number of light shields) in the deactivated state. It is yet another object of the present invention to provide a flash shield and a welded glass structure having an increased transmission density value (ie, the number of light shields) in the inactive state for the purpose of improving the level of safety. Yet another object is to provide a liquid crystal shutter that indicates whether it is functional or not, depending on the level of transmittance. Yet another object is to provide a liquid crystal shutter using at least one liquid crystal element disposed between crossed polarizers to maintain a fast switching time from a bright state to a dark protection state. Yet another object is to provide a shutter of the type described above which has a highly symmetric shade geometry in dark conditions and a wide contrast range in dark activated conditions. In accordance with the present invention, these objects are directed to a voltage controllable liquid crystal cell having a transmittance characteristic that varies with the wavelength of incident light, disposed between polarizers that are twisted relative to one another and angled apart. This is achieved by providing a filter having transmittance characteristics complementary to the transmittance characteristics of the liquid crystal cell when there is no control voltage applied to the cell within the visible wavelength range. Thus, according to one aspect of the present invention, a normally white mode liquid crystal cell having a high transmittance for a particular wavelength range in an inactive state is provided with a band-pass filter for decreasing the transmittance in the particular wavelength range. In combination with a band pass filter, a darkened state is achieved in the deactivated state. Further, the band-pass filter is designed to have a large transmittance at a wavelength that is transmitted with an adjustable transmittance by the liquid crystal cell in the activated state. Therefore, the liquid crystal shutter structure of the present invention has a low transmittance in the inactive state, a large transmittance in the bright first activated state, and a dark second active state while maintaining a fast response time from the bright state to the dark state. Low transmittance is provided in the activated state. In other words, in the liquid crystal cell and the band pass filter, the wavelength dependence of the transmittance characteristic of the band pass filter in a certain wavelength range is different from the wavelength dependence of the transmittance characteristic of the liquid crystal cell in the absence of an electric field. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS FIG. 1 is a schematic diagram of components of an embodiment of a liquid crystal shutter structure according to the present invention. The nematic liquid crystal cell 2 is a transparent plate having electrodes that can be connected to a power supply, provided with means for determining the orientation of the molecules near the surface of the plates, whereby when no electric field exists between the plates. It has a transparent plate adapted to arrange the directions of liquid crystal molecules. According to the present invention, the difference in angle between molecular arrangements in the molecular arrangement direction (also referred to as a twist angle) can be, for example, 0 °. Alternatively, the angle difference can be substantially 90 °, or a value between 90 ° and 0 °. The liquid crystal cell 2 is arranged between two polarizers 3 and 4 having polarization directions perpendicular to each other. The structure 1 is also provided with a band pass filter 5, which is located in the path of the light beam LB passing through the structure 1. In some cases, the shutter structure may have interference filters 6 that have the function of removing UV light and IR light, which also limit the wavelength range. According to another aspect of the invention, the band pass filter 5 also rejects UV and IR light. FIG. 2 shows a first polarizer 3, a first liquid crystal cell 2, a second polarizer 4 having a polarization direction perpendicular to the polarization direction of the first polarizer 3, a second liquid crystal cell 6, and a first polarizer 3. 9 shows another embodiment of the shutter structure including the third polarizer 7 having the same polarization direction as that of the first embodiment and the band-pass filter 5. FIGS. 3A, 3B and 3C show the product of the anisotropy Δn and the thickness d of the cell, the solid line shows the spectral characteristics of the 90 ° twisted nematic cell with Δn * d = 0.80 μm. I have. FIGS. 3A, 3B, and 3C also show the spectral characteristics of the band pass filter in dotted lines. The graphs in FIGS. 3A, 3B, and 3C illustrate transmission plots as a function of wavelength substantially in the visible wavelength range. In FIG. 3A, the curve drawn by the solid line is the Δn * d value of 0.78 μm, placed between crossed polarizers arranged at 45 ° and 135 °, respectively, with respect to the molecular direction vector where the light is incident. 2 shows the spectral characteristics of a 90 ° twisted nematic cell in an electrically inactive state having In this deactivated state, the cell has a maximum transmission in the range of 400 nm and a minimum transmission in the range of 550 nm. The dashed curve shows the spectral characteristics of the band pass filter, which has a large optical transmission in the central part of the visible spectrum, i.e. in the wavelength range from 500 to 600 nm. The low transmission of the liquid crystal cell over the range of 500-600 nm and the low transmission of the band pass filter over the range of 350-500 nm and over 620 nm combine to make such a liquid crystal and a band having this property The result is to give an overall darkening state obtained in combination with a pass filter. FIG. 3B shows the spectrum characteristics of the same liquid crystal cell and the same band-pass filter as in FIG. 3A, in the case of the first activation state when a small driving voltage in the range of 2.5 V is applied to the liquid crystal cell. Is shown. It is clear from the graph that the maximum transmittances for the liquid crystal cell and the band pass filter are consistent in the visible wavelength range of 500-600 nm. Thus, the combined system in this first activated state is in a transparent mode with large transmittance. FIG. 3C also shows the spectral characteristics for the components of the system of FIGS. 3A and 3B, in this case in the second electrically activated state with an applied voltage in the range of 5V. By applying this higher voltage, the transmittance of the liquid crystal cell decreases again at the center of the visible wavelength range. In fact, the transmittance can be controlled in the visible wavelength range by changing the voltage above about 2V until the liquid crystal cell reaches the minimum transmittance. The liquid crystal cell components of such a combination structure usually operate in a manner similar to the white mode, so that the switching time of the device according to the invention has the advantage of being short. This advantage is achieved in combination with the advantage of having a device to return to a dark rest state in the absence of an electric field between the plates of the cell. This is described in more detail in connection with FIG. FIG. 4 shows the spectral characteristics of the 0 ° twisted nematic cell and the band pass filter. That is, the solid line is a graph with a Δn * d value of 0.55 μm placed between crossed polarizers oriented at 45 ° and 135 °, respectively, relative to the molecular director vector where the light is incident. Figure 4 shows the optical properties of the 0 ° birefringent cell in the active state. The dotted curve shows the spectral characteristics of the bandpass filter selected to have a large optical transmission in the central part of the visible spectrum, i.e., in the range of 500-600 nm. From FIG. 4A, it can be seen that the minimum transmittance of the liquid crystal cell in the central portion of the visible wavelength range of 500 to 600 nm matches the maximum transmittance of the band pass filter. Therefore, according to the present invention, when the liquid crystal cell and the band pass filter are combined, a small transmittance state is achieved. If the voltage applied to the cell is zero, then there is no electric field between the plates of the liquid crystal cell. FIG. 4B shows the spectral characteristics of the same liquid crystal cell and band-pass filter at an applied voltage of 2-3 V, and a transparent state is then achieved, as explained above. FIG. 4C shows a second activated state when a voltage of 5 V is applied. The second activated state is a dark state obtained as described above. Calculations show that there are mainly two type cells that exhibit this phenomenon. The first is 90 ° with a Δn * d value in the range of 0.80 μm, located between the crossed polarizers arranged at 45 ° and 135 °, respectively, relative to the molecular alignment director where the light is incident. It is a twisted nematic cell. The other type of cell is also 0 ° with a Δn * d value in the range of 0.55 μm, with polarizers oriented at 45 ° and 135 °, respectively, with respect to the molecular alignment direction where the light is incident. Non-twisted) birefringent cell. The flash shielding device according to the present invention has a sensor that provides a sensor signal corresponding to the detected light intensity. The sensor signal is sent to a controller having a signal generator. The signal generator is configured to generate a control signal in response to the sensor signal. The liquid crystal structure according to the invention comprises a liquid crystal cell having two surfaces, on which electrodes for providing an electric field between the surfaces are provided. The electric field is generated by applying a control signal to the electrodes. When a control signal is sent to the electrodes, a certain control signal voltage produces an electric field corresponding to the liquid crystal cell between the electrodes. FIG. 5 is a graph showing the electro-optical characteristics of the combination of the liquid crystal cells, in which the transmission density, that is, the number of light shielding is plotted against the applied voltage. The curves in FIG. 5 show, for the purpose of this example, the electro-optical properties of an 8 μm 90 ° twisted nematic cell with a Merck mlc60 96 liquid crystal giving a Δn * d value of about 0.78 μm. The cell is positioned between crossed polarizers arranged at 45 ° and 135 °, respectively, with respect to the molecular director vector where the light enters, and has a large optical transmission over the visible spectral center in the 500-600 nm range. Combined with a band pass filter having a ratio. In the deactivated state, when there is no control signal voltage, the optical density value is just above 5.5. When a voltage of about 2 V is applied, the optical density value drops to about 3.3 in the first activated state, which makes it more transparent than in the unactivated state. When a voltage higher than 2V and up to 10V is applied, the optical density value can vary from the minimum value obtained in the first activated state to a value of up to about 11. The optical angle of this cell combination, despite the fact that a 90 ° twisted nematic cell having a Δn * d value in the range of 7.81 μm has good electro-optical properties in a direction parallel to the surface normal. The performance is somewhat inadequate for applications requiring a wide field of view. The present invention provides further advantages by arranging two such cells together so that the opposing molecular alignment directions are substantially vertical. Such an arrangement may result in some cell compensation and a proper field of view. Such an embodiment of the present invention is described in FIG. 2 and has application, for example, as a glass filter for automatic darkening welding. Due to both the low torsion angle and the small Δn * d factor, the advantageous optical angularity of the 0 ° birefringent cell with Δn * d in the range of 0.5 μm is reduced to single and double cells. It has been found that both liquid crystal shutter structures are very preferable and clearly suitable. Such advantageous properties can provide a wide symmetric field of view. However, due to the large residual optical retardation present in the 0 ° cell, the cell contrast obtained from such a device when driven with a voltage applied, even in the range of 10V, is less than that of a 90 ° twisted nematic liquid crystal cell. It becomes smaller compared to. According to an embodiment of the present invention, the cell contrast is improved by adding a compensating retardation film. For the 0 ° birefringent cell embodiment, small retardation values of about 20-50 nm are appropriate. To maximize the compensation effect, the retardation film is preferably arranged such that the direction of the fast axis is perpendicular to the molecular direction vector where light enters and exits. The compensation retardation layer for the 0 ° birefringent cell can be, for example, in the form of a single uniaxially stretched retardation film and have a value between 25 and 30 nm. Alternatively, the compensating retardation layer may be provided by a retardation film arranged such that the true total retardation produced by these two films is provided by the difference between the two values of the film sheet. For example, when a 27 nm compensation retardation film is applied to a shutter structure, the optimum Δn * d value of the cell combination increases from 0.55 μm to 0.77 μm. FIG. 6 shows in principle the location of the retardation film 10 according to the present invention. In FIG. 6, the retardation film 10 is disposed on one side of the liquid crystal cell 2 between the polarizing filters 3 and 4. Alternatively, the retardation film can be included in the liquid crystal cell 2 between the alignment plates. FIG. 7 shows the electro-optical properties of a liquid crystal structure having a 4 μm 0 ° birefringent cell. In this example, the birefringent cell comprises a Merck ZLI-4246 liquid crystal that provides a Δn * d value of about 0.52 μm, and crossed polarizers arranged at 45 ° and 135 ° relative to the molecular director vector where the light is incident. It is located between. Corresponding to the above embodiment, this cell is arranged with a band pass filter, which has a large optical transmission over the central part of the visible spectrum, i.e. in the range of 500-600 nm. Curve 20 shows the optical characteristics of the cell combination without the compensating retardation film, whereas curve 22 shows that the fast axis is perpendicular to the molecular director where the light is incident. 9 shows a cell combination having an oriented 26 nm compensated retardation film. The improvement of the cell contrast by the compensation retardation film can be clearly seen from this figure. FIGS. 8A, 8B and 9 are diagrams showing in principle the shading geometry in the central visual cone for the cell combinations described above. In particular, FIG. 8A shows the shading geometry A of a 90 ° twisted nematic single cell, where the shading geometry is asymmetric over a fairly large range, while the cell contrast is still high. Is clear. FIG. 8B shows the shading geometries A and B of a combination of two 90 ° twisted nematic cells arranged with an asymmetric polarizer. Although the shading geometry from each cell is still asymmetric, the combination provides a symmetric overall shading geometry with high contrast. In contrast, as shown in FIG. 9, a single cell with a small twist of 0 ° provides a large shading geometry with a large symmetry scale, combined with a retardation film, with a large contrast. A substantially symmetric shading geometry is obtained.
