Aluminum-scandium alloy and method of using same
Field of the invention
The present invention relates generally to aluminum-based alloys, and more particularly
A variety of alloys, especially when used as a base alloy or filler metal alloy in welding applications
Aluminum containing scandium with other alloying components to improve properties
Related to alloys based on
Background of the Invention
The weldability of an aluminum alloy (ie, base alloy or base material) depends on the weld solidification.
It can be defined as the resistance of the alloy to hot cracks in solids. Aluminum alloy,
The main cause of hot cracking during welding compared to other metal alloys is aluminum.
Is that the coefficient of thermal expansion and solidification shrinkage of the alloy are relatively high. These factors depend on the nature
Technically useful engineering alloys with improved (eg, strength, and ductility)
If one or more alloying components are added to the aluminum to obtain
It gets complicated. More specifically, unlike pure aluminum, which has a constant melting point,
The multi-component aluminum alloy has a wide temperature interval between the liquidus temperature and the solidus temperature
Solidifies over Due to the wide solidification range, liquid flow splits between dendrites.
Detrimental thermal expansion and stress which generate enough stress to eventually cause the film to crack
Frequent volume changes occur.
Many high strength aluminum alloys have been developed and these alloys are generally
Are categorized according to the main alloying additives (eg, Al-Cu: 2XXX, Al-Mg:
5XXX, Al-Si: 6XXX, and Al-Zn: 7XXX). One main alloying component
As such, these alloys are commonly referred to as binary systems. However, many
In some cases, specific sub-assemblies are required to produce a variety of alloys that are targeted for several end uses.
Alloying additives are added. Typically, the processing characteristics and properties of these alloy systems are
For further improvement, for example, Ti, Zr, Cr, Mn, V, Yt, Nb, B, TiBTwo, And Hf
Add the grain refiner. Because these types of alloys have enhanced properties,
It is desirable to use these types of alloys in structures that are preferably assembled by welding
New
The weldability of high-strength aluminum alloys is at least partially
It depends on the amount of the ingredients. The general behavior of binary alloy systems in welding is based on the alloying level.
Very low alloying level, high alloying level, near the solid solubility limit of aluminum
And intermediate alloying level. Extreme alloying level
Low, near pure aluminum, the dendrite is a liquid film between dendrites
Cracks during solidification because they tend to entangle with each other without actually forming
Very few things. At high alloying levels, relatively small cracks are observed. Coagulation
Solidification range is relatively large and solidification occurs even when a dendritic intercrystalline liquid film is formed.
Hot cracks that form in the interior are repaired by filling with a eutectic liquid that solidifies last
Is done. This is especially true for binary alloys that form eutectic phases (eg, Cu, Mg, and Si).
it is obvious. Hot cracks are most likely to occur at intermediate alloy levels. Eutectic
Although the body film enters the area between the dendrites, the heat shrinkage of the dendrites
The liquid film is stressed enough to crack
Then, cracks will be formed in the solidified welded product. Different from highly alloyed binary alloys
Insufficient amount of eutectic liquid is available to repair hot cracks. Like this
An exception to this trend has been reported for Zn additives. A eutectic phase exists in the Al-Zn system.
As the Zn content increases, the possibility of hot cracking increases continuously.
In addition to the amount of alloying components that affect the weldability of binary systems, the type of ternary alloying components
Plays an important role in affecting weldability. For example, in addition to binary alloy systems
Many of the added strength enhancing additives had a deleterious effect on weldability. For example
When a small amount of Mg is added to Al-Cu (that is, 2XXX alloy), the strength of the alloy becomes remarkable.
Break
Be improved. As an example, alloy 2024 (Al-4.3Cu-1.5Mg-0.60Mn)
Are widely used in aircraft construction. Addition of Mg greatly increases melting range
However, it has a serious effect on weldability. Therefore, alloy 2024 is typically
, Not used for welded structures. The highest strength alloy is Al-Zn-Mg (ie, 7XX
X-type), particularly an alloy to which Cu is added. Solidification range by adding Cu
Can be increased by about 100 ° C., and the weldability generally decreases. Thus, these alloys
Is most likely to require adequate weldability despite its promising properties.
It was not used.
Currently, restrictions are placed on the use of high strength aluminum alloys in welded structures.
To maintain mechanical properties such as strength and ductility while enhancing weldability
It is highly desirable to redesign these alloys to enhance or enhance them.
Another important factor in welding aluminum alloys is the filler wire. Many
In the first penetration pass using a welding torch in many welding processes
Move the metal to the other side of the plate. Many during or following the first penetration pass
By continuously supplying the filler metal to the weld in one of the passes.
Need to compensate for the movement. The resulting weld is in this case the original substrate
Alloy and filler metal alloy, and the ratio of filler metal to base metal alloy depends on the shape of the joint.
Depends on the situation. For example, when welding relatively thick aluminum plates
Typically uses a “V-joint” shape, in proportion to which the amount of filler metal alloy is
More (eg, 70% -90%). In contrast, a relatively thin gauge
Butt joint shape for use in welds, with relatively low filler alloy content
Low (eg, 10% to 30%).
The recent literature on weldability shows that the choice of filler metal alloys
At the dilution level (ie, high filler metal content), there is a significant effect on hot crack resistance.
It is stated that it can have an effect. Review of composition of aluminum filler alloy
By examining the strikes, many filler metal alloys have high levels of one solute (eg,
For example, Cu, Si, or Mg) and a grain refiner (eg, Mn, Cr, Ti, Zr, V, Yt)
, Nb, B, TiB2, and Hf). These alloys are designed for welding purposes only.
Typically, filler metal alloy design is used to reduce the solidification range.
Is limited so that only a single main alloying additive can be added to the alloy. Follow
The filler metal alloy is a complex aluminum alloy for training such as 2024, 7075 and 6061.
It is rare to obtain the properties of an aluminum alloy. Furthermore, when a filler metal alloy is attached,
The contact microstructure is the same as the cast state, which has the lowest strength, which results in
Strength is reduced. Limiting filler alloy composition to one main alloying additive to improve strength properties
The combination of the casting state and the strength characteristics of the welded material is
/ 3. Therefore, the thickness of the welded plate is
3 times thicker than a minute, which poses a significant weight drawback. Weight
In critical aircraft constructions, this design limitation places a thick press in the area where the welding takes place.
The problem is solved by using a sheet and chemically polishing the remaining area. This one
The method alleviates the weight problem somewhat, but increases the cost of the material and increases the processing costs.
Transforms most of the aluminum plate into toxic chemical waste
It causes other problems such as adverse effects.
Providing an improved method for manufacturing aluminum structures to welded structure designers
It is highly desirable to do. Such methods include aluminum base alloys and alloys.
Changes to both the Luminium filler alloy are included.
Aluminum alloys have an excellent combination of mechanical and physical properties
. Combining these properties of aluminum alloys with the relatively low density of such alloys
The combination allows the designer to produce a reliable and lightweight structure.
In addition, due to the wide range of alloy systems and tempering, structural designers have
There are several options to use a suitable alloy specifically designed for the environment.
Typically, all aluminum alloys are made of Zr, Ti, Cr, Mn, and V
Contains a grain refiner. Grain refiner forms intermetallic compound with Al during casting
By doing so, agglomeration of crystal grains is assisted. For example, Ti is TiAlThreeForm a phase,
This phase causes the α-aluminum particles to agglomerate when the setting of the molten metal occurs.
Many TiAlThreeThe particles aid in the aggregation of α-aluminum in some areas. Follow
The solidified crystal structure is observed in aluminum alloys that do not contain crystal refining components.
Much finer than the
Improve sex.
Another function of the grain refinement component is that during ingot casting and preheating, coherence (eg,
If AlThreeZr) and incoherent (eg, Al12MgTwoCr and AlTwoOMnThreeCuTwo) The insoluble phase
It is to form. These thermally stable dispersoids provide for static recrystallization during processing
To prevent or delay In addition, the dispersoid phases are elongated crystalline boundaries that occur during processing.
Grain boundaries, preventing recrystallization that would otherwise occur during solute heat treatment

Aluminum alloy is a relatively low strength alloy 6061 (yield strength = 40 ks)
i) and 7005 (yield strength = 42 ksi). Obviously available
Higher yield strength values such as 7001 (90 ksi) or 7075 (75 ksi)
There are aluminum alloys that have However, alloys 7001 and 7075 are
Very hot cracks are easily generated during welding and are not used for welded structures. This crack
Tend to be caused by the high solute levels of Zn and Mg and the effect of Cu to increase the solidification range.
It depends on the combination of fruits. If the solidification range is large, solidification shrinkage and heat shrinkage
Adverse effects are necessary to cause tearing of the Interdendritec liquid film.
The time to do it becomes longer. This is an example of an alloy design discrepancy between strength and weldability.

The alloy is almost the same as 7001 except for a lower Zn content. Also
And 3 kinds of 5XXX type filler alloys are also processed and 2 kinds of newly constituted 7XXX alloys
Both were used for welding tests. Conventional 5356 filler containing Mn, Ti and Cr
Along with the alloy, two new filler alloys, one with Ti + Sc
In the modification of the above, the device was manufactured using only Sc.
Using a general weldability test, the Holdcroft crack susceptibility test,
The weldability of different combinations of the welded alloy and base metal was evaluated. In the weld
Bundles are increased by machining slots that are perpendicular to the welding direction and cracks are increased.
Throughout the alloy development plan of the present inventors, non-weldable aluminum
It has been observed that the alloy may exhibit crack levels as high as 63%.
As shown in FIG. 1, a Sc-containing filler alloy Al-5.4Mg-0.28Sc
1-6.1Zn-2.9Mg-2.1Cu-0.20Sc-0.11Zr
When used in combination with a base metal alloy, Holdcroft crack susceptibility test
Has 0% cracks, that is, no cracks are formed. Importantly, the Sc level in the base metal
Increasing to 0.40% seems to actually crack at higher levels. this is,
Probably due to excess Sc-formed coarse primary particles that were not well distributed.
If the base alloy remelts during welding and mixing with the filler alloy, these coarse particles will
Causes crystal re-nucleation in the weld metal or crystal growth in the heat affected zone
It is not effective in controlling
From the literature on aluminum welding metallurgy, the person skilled in the art would have
With no examples, it can be seen that this type of result has not been reported in public property. High strength
The 7XXX type alloy is melted by the 5XXX type filler alloy using the inventor's alloy design principle.
It is important that contact is possible and that no cracks are observed in the accelerated hot cracking test. This
Efforts to translate the behavior of steel into real world welding where weld constraint is a significant factor
The designer of the welded structure then re-designed the method to use a high-strength alloy.
Can be considered. Even if these 7XXX alloys have been used since the late 1930s
However, the weldability problem has not been resolved up to this point.
How Bicycle Frame Designers Weld Here Ultra High Strength Al-Zn-Mg
-Can the Cu-Sc-Zr alloy be introduced for commonly used 7005?
To reconsider the use of new alloys to take advantage of high strength levels.
Equations can be set up to determine the tube thickness that can be used in any case. Bike frame
The stressed state of the pipe under bending is mainly bending. Therefore, the designer must consider the permanent yield of the pipe
Yield moment M of inertia that must be avoided to preventyBasic engineering
Would consider a mathematical equation.
This value MyIs the material yield strength σyIs proportional to the product of the moment of inertia I:
My ασyI (where I = πDFour(1-d / D)Four)
This value d is the inside diameter of the tube, and D is the outside diameter of the tube.
The designer has the same yield moment My7X01M (X is a new
Indicate alloy improved using the metallization principle)yI and major bicycle alloys
7005 set equal to each other to reduce the ultimate weight of the frame with the new alloy
Ask for less, ie:
σyI)7x01= ΣyI)7005
Or
{[Σy] [ΠDFour(1-d / D)Four}7x01=
{[Σy] [ΠDFour(1-d / D)Four}7005
The yield strength values of 7X01 (90 ksi) and 7005 (40 ksi) were then
The value for the outer diameter of the existing 7005 tube design (1.5 inches) and the existing 7005 tube
It can be substituted into the equation together with the inner diameter value (1.44 inches). With this, 7005 tubes
A wall thickness of 0.060 inches is obtained. Same for new 7001 tubes
Assuming an outside diameter of 1.5 inches, then solving the equation for the inside diameter of the 7X01 tube
it can.
Using the above, the new 7001 tube inside diameter for the bike frame
The calculated value is 1.475 inches or 0.025 inches thick. Existing 7005 installations
New weldable high-strength alloy compared to 0.060 inch
New frame design is less than half the weight of existing bike frames
. You can replace a 4 pound frame with a frame that is lighter than 2 pounds. Of this size
The weight reduction significantly increases the climbing ability of the rider. Replace parts
To reduce the total weight of the bike by hundreds of g
Looking at an article on weight reduction from a magazine, the frame design example here
Since the weight can be reduced to more than 0 g, it is not inferior. Furthermore, this applies to parts
Thus, an unprecedented weight loss using the new alloy can be achieved.
1) Improved hot workability, 2) Improved fatigue resistance, 3) Improved heat and room temperature
Formability 4) Improved weldability and weld strength 5) Improved extrudability and forgeability
6) Another advantageous property of these alloys, including improved particle structure, is that
It can be used for designing frames and parts.
Example 2
Aluminum alloys are most high-strength steels at ambient temperature, taking density into account.
And titanium alloys. Aluminum alloy when the operating temperature exceeds about 100 ℃
Begins to lose strength and, when the temperature exceeds 200 ° C, is less than half of the ambient temperature strength value
Is also smaller. Of all aluminum alloys, alloy 2618 (Al-2.4C
u-1.0Ni-1.0Fe-0.20Si) is mainly used when exposed to high temperatures.
It is an important alloy. Currently demanding applications that currently utilize this alloy include skin panels
Concorde aircraft that fly over surfaces at a rate that causes heating and air that causes exposure to high temperatures
Engine parts.
The possibility of using the alloy design concept of the present invention for designing new alloys for high-temperature applications was evaluated.
For the sake of valuation, two variants using the Sc + Zr addition were identified as a 2618 alloy and
The sheet was cast and rolled. The composition is shown below.
Each of the alloys is then solution heat treated at 490 ° C. for 1 hour, water quenched and stretched 5%
After aging at a temperature of 180 ° C. for various time intervals. Next, a three-point bending test was used.
The 0.2% offset strength at each time interval was evaluated. Table 2
Thus, with the addition of Sc and Zr, up to 73
% Strength is improved. At the 0.15 Sc level, these aging parameters
Intensities higher than the 0.45 Sc level are obtained.
2618 is considered to be a non-weldable alloy because of its low Cu content,
oldcroft crack susceptibility tests show that this type of alloy has improved weldability.
It was measured whether it could be shown. Three types of filler alloys (conventional 2319 filler alloy and
Two new filler alloys) were designed using the principles of the present invention. The composition of the filler alloy
It is shown below.
As shown in FIG. 2, a conventional 231 used to weld the weld 2618
With the combination of Type 9 filler alloy, the Holdcroft crack susceptibility test
50% of cracks occur. Alloy using 2X19, # 1 and 2X19, # 2
The use of 2319 reduces the number of cracks, but it is still in the range of 13-44%.
Cracks occur. Obviously, when the improved high strength alloy is combined with the redesigned filler alloy
Best results are obtained. Surprisingly, it contains 0.40 Sc + 0.22 Zr.
Using a base alloy having 0.15Sc + 0.16Zr welded with a filler alloy
, 0% hot cracking, that is, no hot cracking occurs. Again, the non-weldable alloy
It was converted to a weldable alloy using the principles of alloy design in the present invention. Aluminum alloy
Designers of systems trying to use gold in high-temperature environments will now see excellent weldability
Alloys with a 73% strength increase potential can be considered.
