In particular it relates to the production of steel strip by twin roll casting, but it is also applicable to production by other continuous casting techniques such as by a single roll caster. In the twin roll casting machine, a molten metal casting pool is formed above the roll gap by guiding the molten metal between a pair of chill casting rolls rotating in opposite directions. The metal shells solidify on the moving roll surface and are united in the roll gap to produce a solidified strip product at the exit from the roll gap. In this specification, the term "roll gap" generally refers to a region where rolls are closest to each other. Molten metal can be introduced into the roll nip via a tundish and a metal feed nozzle located below it that directs a metal stream from the tundish to a roll nip. Twin roll casting has achieved some success in applications to non-ferrous metals that rapidly solidify upon cooling, but there are various problems in applying the technique to casting of ferrous metals. The inventions disclosed in our earlier patent specifications 631728, 645296, 634896 and 634429 address some of these problems. These developments have made it possible to continuously cast steel strip without damage or major structural defects. However, steel strip exits the caster at high temperatures (typically above 1200 ° C.) and further cooling without refining results in a poorly ductile strip. Particularly, in a low carbon steel of 0.20% by weight or less, the crude austenite structure tends to transform upon cooling to form acicular ferrite and bainite. The present invention allows the metallurgical structure of as-produced steel strip to be modified on a continuous strip caster to produce a final strip product with good ductility and other mechanical properties. . DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION According to the present invention, a continuous casting machine continuously casts solidified strip products from a low carbon steel melt casting sump and the solidified strip as it exits the casting machine is in the same line as the casting machine. In the meantime, (a) the solidified strip is cooled to a temperature at which the austenite in the steel transforms into ferrite and / or other low temperature phases, and (b) the ferrite and / or other low temperature phases in the strip are reconverted to austenite. Low carbon steel strip manufacturing comprising heating the strip to a temperature below 1200 ° C. which is a transformation temperature, and (c) recooling the strip to treat the austenite in the strip by retransforming it into ferrite. A method is provided. By cooling below 800 ° C, preferably below 700 ° C, the steel strip can initially be cooled to a temperature at which the austenite in the steel transforms into ferrite and / or other low temperature phases. The method of the present invention can include passing the strip through a reduction roll to reduce the strip thickness while in the same line as the caster. Prior to first cooling the strip to a temperature at which the austenite in the steel transforms into ferrite and / or other low temperature phases, the strip can be passed through a draft roll to reduce its thickness. Alternatively, the strip may be passed through a draft roll to reduce its thickness prior to recooling the strip to transform the austenite in the strip to ferrite. In either case, the coagulated strip can pass through the drafting roll at a temperature in the range of 900 ° C to 1100 ° C, preferably in the order of 1050 ° C. By allowing the strip to pass through the draft roll, the gauge control of the final strip product can be improved and the porosity reduced. Furthermore, when rolling produces a thickness reduction in the range of 20% to 50%, the austenite grain size in the strip becomes finer, and the transformation temperature line at which austenite transforms into ferrite during cooling is significantly increased. Get higher Therefore, if rolling is performed before the first cooling, the minimum temperature line in which the strip must be cooled before reheating is significantly higher, thus reducing the total energy consumed in the process. Specifically, depending on the steel, austenite transforms into ferrite at a temperature as high as 800 ° C when strip is rolled, but it may be necessary to cool the strip to a temperature in the range of 600 ° C to 700 ° C without rolling. There is. By reheating the strip to retransform the ferrite and / or other low temperature phase to austenite, preferably the temperature of the strip does not exceed 1100 ° C, more preferably 1100 ° C, more preferably Raise it so that it does not exceed 1050 ° C. Reheating the strip to retransform the ferrite and / or other low temperature phases to austenite preferably raises the temperature of the strip to no more than 900 ° C. In particular, the strip can be reheated to temperatures on the order of 950 ° C. Reheating the strip to retransform the ferrite and / or other low temperature phases to austenite preferably raises the strip to a temperature below that at which austenite grit forms. Reheating can be done in an induction furnace or other type of furnace. Strip recooling, which retransforms the austenite in the strip into ferrite, is preferably carried out by accelerated cooling of the strip to temperatures below 700 ° C., followed by forced cooling (in the wound state) or The ambient temperature can be raised by natural cooling. Accelerated cooling can be provided by water spraying or gas blowing the strips or by cooling the rolls, preferably reducing the strip temperature to the 650 ° C range. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS In order that this invention may be more fully described, one specific embodiment will be described in some detail with reference to the accompanying drawings. FIG. 10 is a vertical sectional view taken along line 10-10 of FIG. 7. Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiments A series of experiments were conducted to investigate the microstructure that can be produced in low carbon steel strips by thermal cycling according to the present invention. A high temperature dilatometer capable of heating and cooling a steel sample at a precisely controlled rate was utilized in a series of experiments to simulate what could be obtained with a continuous strip caster. Various steel compositions were investigated and these were subjected to cooling, reheating and recooling. First, each sample was heated to a temperature of 1350 ° C., held in the dilatometer for 2 minutes and then cooled to a temperature below which all austenite transformed into a low temperature transformation product. The sample was then reheated to a temperature at which it was fully reaustenized and then recooled. Tests were performed using different cooling and reheating rates for different grades of steel. These tests show that the initial cooling and reheating rates are not so important that the fine ferrite structure is created during final cooling by heating the sample to a temperature just above the temperature at which the strip is completely reaustenized. Was shown. FIG. 1 shows the specific conditions added to the AO6 low carbon steel sample, and FIG. 2 shows the microstructure created in the sample. For comparison, FIG. 3 shows the microstructure obtained when a sample of AO 6 steel is cooled from a temperature of 1350 ° C. directly to room temperature without thermal cycling. The results obtained from the dilatometry experiment were confirmed in a laboratory strip casting test involving the production of 2 mm thick steel strip on a twin roll caster. A sample of the cast strip was cooled to approximately 650 ° C and then placed in a fluidized bed furnace at 950 ° C for 1 minute and then cooled in air to room temperature. For comparison, the material body produced by casting was cooled with water spray and wound at about 600 ° C. FIG. 4 is a photomicrograph showing the microstructure of a low carbon steel simply cooled and wound at 600 ° C., and FIG. 5 shows the microstructure of steel from the same strip that has undergone reheat and cool cycling. It is a micrograph. 6-10 show a complete continuous strip casting machine facility configured to operate in accordance with the present invention. This casting machine comprises a main machine frame 11 which is erected on a factory floor 12. The frame 11 supports a casting roll carriage 13 that can move horizontally between the assembly station 14 and the casting station 15. The carriage 13 carries a pair of parallel casting rolls 16 to which molten metal is supplied from a ladle 17 via a tundish 18 and a supply nozzle 19 during casting. Since the casting roll 16 is water cooled, the shells solidify on the moving roll surface and are united in the roll gap, producing a solidified strip product at the roll exit. In accordance with the present invention, the article is fed via pinch roll 100 and descaling device 107 to a reduction roll stand, generally designated by the numeral 110, which is then followed by strip cooler 111, strip reheat furnace 112, The two-strip cooler 113 is passed through, and the pinch roll 109 is further passed. A container 23 is attached to the machine frame adjacent to the casting station and molten metal is passed through the tundish overflow 24, or if problems such as severe deformation of the strip occur during the casting operation, on one side of the tundish. It can be transferred to this container by pulling out the emergency plug 25. Since the carriage frame 31 constituting the roll carriage 13 is mounted on the rail 33 by the wheel 32, and the rail 33 extends along a part of the main machine frame 11, the entire roll carriage 13 is mounted so as to be movable along the rail 33. Will be. The roll 16 is rotatably mounted in a pair of roll cradle 34 carried by the carriage frame 31. The roll cradle 34 is attached to the dolly frame 31 by mutually connecting complementary sliding members 35 and 36, and the cradle moves on the dolly under the influence of the hydraulic cylinder units 37 and 38 so that the casting rolls 16 are not separated from each other. Be able to adjust the roll gap of. A double-acting hydraulic piston / cylinder device 39, which operates to move the entire carriage along the rail 33, is connected between the drive bracket 40 of the roll carriage and the main machine frame to move the roll carriage from the assembly station 14 to the casting station. It is adapted to be moved to 15 and vice versa. The casting roll 16 is rotated in opposite directions via the roll drive shaft 41 of the electric motor and the transmission on the carriage frame 31. In a series of water cooling passages formed in the copper peripheral wall of the roll 16 and extending in the longitudinal direction and spaced in the circumferential direction, from the water cooling conduit in the roll drive shaft 41 connected to the water cooling hose 42 via the rotating gland 43 to the roll end. Supply cooling water. A typical roll size is about 500 mm in diameter, and can be up to a few meters long to make multiple strips as described below. The ladle 17 is of entirely conventional construction and is supported by an overhead crane via a yoke 45, which allows it to be transferred from the molten metal receiving station into position. The ladle is provided with a stopper rod 46 that can be actuated by a servo cylinder so that the molten metal can flow from the ladle into the tundish 18 via the outlet nozzle 47 and the refractory shroud 48. The tundish 18 also has a conventional configuration and is in the shape of a wide plate made of a refractory material such as magnesium oxide (MgO). One side of the tundish receives the molten metal from the ladle and is equipped with the overflow port 24 and the emergency plug 25. The other side of the tundish is provided with a series of longitudinally spaced molten metal outlet openings 52. The lower part of the tundish has a mounting bracket 53 for mounting the tundish on the roll carriage frame 31 and an opening for receiving a positioning peg 54 of the carriage frame to accurately position the tundish. The supply nozzle 19 is formed as an elongated body made of a refractory material such as alumina graphite. Since the lower part thereof is tapered so as to be narrowed inward and downward, it can enter the gap of the casting roll 16. A mounting bracket 60 is provided to support the nozzle from the lower side of the tundish, and a side flange 55 protruding outward is formed on the upper portion of the nozzle to be positioned on the mounting bracket. The nozzle 19 has a series of horizontally-spaced, generally vertically-extending channels that produce an appropriately slow discharge flow of metal across the width of the roll, allowing molten metal to enter the roll gap without directly contacting the roll surface where initial solidification occurs. Can be sent. Alternatively, the nozzle may have a single slotted outlet to deliver the slow curtain of molten metal directly to the roll gap and / or the nozzle may be immersed in the molten metal reservoir. The reservoir is defined at the roll ends by a pair of side closure plates 56. The side closure plate 56 is held on the stepped end 57 of the roll when the roll carriage is at the casting station. The side closure plate 56 is made of a strong refractory material such as boron nitride and has a scallop side end 81 that fits the curved surface of the stepped end 57 of the roll. The plate holder 82 to which the side closing plate is attached is movable at the casting station by the operation of the pair of hydraulic cylinder devices 83, and the side closing plate engages with the stepped end of the casting roll to perform casting during the casting operation. It constitutes an end closure of the molten metal reservoir formed on the roll. During the casting operation, the ladle stopper rod 46 is actuated to cause molten metal to pour from the ladle into the tundish and, through the metal feed nozzle, into the casting roll. The strip 20 is first guided by the operation of the apron table 96 to the pinch roll 100 and the roll stand 110. The apron table 96 is hung from the pivot mounting portion 97 on the main machine frame, and can be swung toward the coiler by the operation of the hydraulic cylinder device 98. The apron table 96 can be operated with respect to the upper strip guide flap 99 operated by the piston cylinder device 101, and the strip 20 can be restricted between a pair of vertical side rolls 102. After guiding the strip to the reduction roll stand, the apron table is pivoted in the opposite direction back to the inoperative position and simply suspended from the machine frame, away from the strip item directly received by the reduction roll stand 110. It will be in a state of The hot strip 20 solidifies at temperatures above 1200 ° C. and thus has a coarse austenitic structure. Austenite grain size can typically be in the 500 micron range. If the hot strip is simply allowed to cool to ambient temperature, the coarse-grained austenite tends to transform to form acicular ferrite and bainite. However, the metallurgical structure of the strip as it emerges from the strip caster is modified by hot rolling the strip and the thermal cycling experienced by cooler 111, furnace 112 and recooler 113 to provide good ductility and other mechanical properties. The final strip product with is manufactured. The reduction roll stand 110 is composed of upper and lower rolls 114 and 115. The strip passes between these rolls at temperatures in the 1050 ° C. range, which reduces the strip thickness by as much as 30%. Rolling down reduces the porosity of the final strip and allows its thickness to be accurately standardized. Further, the strip is hot-rolled to a reduction of 20 to 50% at a temperature of more than 900 ° C. to recrystallize austenite, thereby forming an austenite structure having a grain size significantly smaller than that of the strip exiting the casting roll 16. Create, which significantly increases the temperature level at which austenite transforms into ferrite and other low temperature phases upon cooling. Typically, the strip exiting the caster has a grain size on the order of 500 microns, while the strip exiting the reduction roll stand can have a grain size on the order of 100 microns, which results in relevant transformation temperature levels. Can increase as much as 100 ° C., thus reducing the cooling requirements before reheating and thus reducing the total energy consumption required for reheating during the process. The cooler 111 consists of a series of water atomizers 117 by which water is sprayed onto the strip to reduce its temperature by 20 ° C. to 200 ° C. per second, reducing the roll temperature from 1050 ° C. to about 600 ° C. Reduce to temperature. This is well below the temperature A r3 at which the austenite in the strip transforms into a ferrite or other low temperature phase upon cooling. According to the above-mentioned dilatometry test, in the case of a low carbon steel containing 0.06% by weight of carbon, the coarse-grain austenite structure begins to transform into ferrite at around 775 ° C during cooling, whereas the fine-grain austenite structure transforms around 830 ° C. Was shown to begin. Therefore, when passing through the cooler 111, the austenite in the strip is transformed into ferrite containing a little pearlite or carbide. The strip then passes through an induction furnace 112 that reheats the strip to a temperature near 950 ° C. This temperature is above the temperature A e3 at which the material austenites upon heating. Therefore, the material is re-austenized to produce much smaller grain size austenite than it was prior to thermal cycling. Specifically, the material exiting the furnace 112 has an austenite grain size on the order of 20 microns. The strip material exiting the furnace 112 is rapidly cooled in a cooler 113 at a rate of 20 ° C to 200 ° C per second and lowered to 650 ° C, which is lower than the transformation temperature Ar 3 of the relatively fine-grained austenitic material. Therefore, this material is transformed to produce fine ferrites with grain sizes typically on the order of 5-10 microns. Thereafter, the strip material is sent to a coiler (not shown) and left to cool to the ambient temperature in the rolled state, but it is also possible to continue the accelerated cooling to such temperature. Due to the fine ferrite structure, the final strip product is very ductile and can be easily cold rolled and formed. Although there is a hot rolling step, the porosity is very low, but in some cases the hot rolling step may be omitted. In this case, the hot strip product emerging from the casting roll 16 is passed directly through the cooler 111 and the temperature is reduced to 600 ° C as before. In a further modification of the process, a roll stand 110 is placed between the furnace 112 and the recooler 113 and a reduction to reduce strip thickness is applied after the reheating stage of the thermal recycling process and before the recooling stage. It can be carried out.
