Abstract

(57)【要約】 【目的】 本発明の目的は、連続的に更新され且つケー
ブル又は衛星により放送されるか又はその他の「高速デ
ータ」通路を与えられる装荷テレビジョン番組情報をア
クセスできるユーザインターフェイスを提供することで
ある。 【構成】 装荷されるテレビジョン番組情報をアクセス
でき、絶えず更新され且つ放送されるか又はケーブル又
は衛星送信通路あるいはその他の「高速データ」通路上
でのいずれかで与えられ、且つこの情報をユーザの好み

【発明の詳細な説明】
【０００１】
【産業上の利用分野】本発明は、テレビジョン番組情報
データベースを用いる改善されたテレビジョンインター
フェイスシステムに関するものである。
【０００２】
【従来の技術】米国特許第5,047,867 号はユーザにその
ユーザの気に入ったテレビジョン番組に関する情報を入
れることを可能にしたテレビジョン−ビデオカセットレ
コーダシステム用のインターフェイスを記載していた。
その情報は、番組名、放送チャネル、開始時刻、長さ、
反復パターン及びユーザが記録された番組を希望したか
どうかを含み得る。その特許は更にそのような情報が直
観的な且つ容易な方法でテレビジョン受信機のディスプ
レーを通して与えられ得るインターフェイスシステムを
記載している。この特許の技術はここに参考文献により
組み込まれる。
【０００３】装荷できるテレビジョン番組情報を使用す
るテレビジョンシステムは、例えばインサイトテレキャ
スト有限会社（Insight Telecast, Inc.）により、及び
米国特許第4,751,578 号, 第4,706,121 号及び第4,977,
455 号に記載されており、それらはここに参考文献によ
り組み込まれる。これらのシステムを用いて、テレビジ
ョン番組情報は装荷され得て且つテレビジョンディスプ
レー上に表示されるようにメモリ内に記憶される。米国

【発明が解決しようとする課題】本発明の目的は、連続
的に更新され且つケーブル又は衛星送信通路により放送
されるか又はその他の「高速データ」通路を与えられる
装荷テレビジョン番組情報をアクセスできるユーザイン
ターフェイスを提供することであり、且つこの情報をユ
ーザの好みと自動的に相関させ、その相関の結果に基づ
いた少なくとも一つの番組情報データベースを創造する
ことである。

【課題を解決するための手段】本発明の一実施例は、テ
レビジョンプログラミングと一緒に、例えば来週用に予
定されたテレビジョン番組の文書概要を含み得る、更新
できるテレビジョン番組情報を与えるテレビジョン送信
システムによって用いられ得るインターフェイスシステ
ムを具えている。特に、このインターフェイスシステム
は、テレビジョン受信機、ビデオカセットレコーダ、及
びテレビジョン番組情報を含み得る多様なデータと同時
に圧縮されたオーディオ／ビデオデータを運び得るディ
ジタル送信システムと一緒に用いられ得るプロセッサを
具え得る。好適な実施例においては、そのプロセッサは
テレビジョン番組情報を聴視者の好みと相関させるため
に「自由文書」探索技術を使用する。

ン番組情報をユーザの好みと相関させることに加えて、
聴視者に興味ある番組のみを含んでいる誂えのテレビジ
ョン番組データベースを創造し、且つテレビジョンディ
スプレーの一部としてこの情報を表示するための手段を
具えている。この情報は、概要、等級、推薦及び各呼び
物の番組に対する費用と同時に、表題、チャネル、範
疇、日、時刻、長さ、反復割合その他を含み得る。それ
に加えて、広帯域又は高速データチャネルがこの情報を
与えるために用いられ、ビデオ画像と番組情報に関する
グラフィックスとをも与えられ得る。

【実施例】ここに記載される本発明の実施例は、本出願
の譲り受け人により取得され、且つ本発明と共通の発明
性を有する米国特許第5,047,867 号に最初に記載された
多くの特徴を与える。この米国特許第5,047,867 号は、
メモリの部分がプログラミング情報の種々の範疇を記憶
するために用いられ得る方法を記載している。例えば、
第１メモリ部分が、データベースの形態で、ユーザによ
り好まれる番組に関する情報と同時に、将来のテレビジ
ョン番組に関する情報を記憶できる。このデータベース
をアクセスすることにより、そのユーザは進歩したメニ
ューとディスプレーとのシステム及び拡張されたチャネ
ル環を用いて、「お気に入りの放送番組」と同時に「将
来の番組」を表示できる。米国特許第5,047,867 号に記
載された特定データベースからユーザへ情報を与えるた
めの技術は、本発明の表示要求に容易に適合され得て、
且つここに参考文献により組み込まれる。
【０００９】図１はブロック線図の形態で、本発明の好
適な実施例を記載している。この実施例においては、将
来のプログラミングを説明するデータと同時に番組材料
がディジタル送信システムを介して与えられ、そのシス
テムは文書と実写的な形態とで今度の週（又は時間のそ
の他の何か便利な期間）に対して予定されたテレビジョ
ンショーについての情報を与えるためのデータと一緒
に、圧縮されたオーディオ／ビデオデータを（例えばMP
EG及びMUSICAM フォーマットを用いて）運ぶ。この情報

示された種々のブロック要素は分離され得るか又は図示
よりも大きい装置へ統合され得て、且つなお本発明の範
囲内にあることは理解されねばならない。
【００１１】プログラミング情報データ(PID）と同時に
オーディオ／ビデオテレビジョン番組(A/V）を具えてい
るディジタルデータが、入力端子２においてこのシステ
ムへ与えられる。ここに組み込まれた参考文献に記載さ
れるように、このデータは放送又はケーブル、光ファイ
バー、衛星又はそのような情報のための送逹の適当な手
段による無線周波数信号として与えられ得る。この記述
の目的のために、ディジタルデータは広帯域又は「高速
ディジタル」データチャネルにより与えられると想定
し、それによりプログラミング情報データ(PID) にやが
てくるテレビジョン番組に関する文書及び絵入り情報を
含むことを許容する。
【００１２】図示の本発明の実施例においては、ビデオ
カセットレコーダ５がテレビジョン受信機40と一緒に用

る。無線周波数デコーダー10の出力はテープ輸送機関20
により記録されるか、又はテレビジョン受信機40への補
助入力端子22を介してテレビジョン受信機40へ送られ得
る。
【００１５】無線周波数デコーダー15は、無線周波数信
号入力により与えられたプログラミング情報データを分
離し、且つプロセッサ35へそのプログラミング情報デー
タを与える。無線周波数デコーダー15により復号された
オーディオ／ビデオテレビジョン番組データは、入力端
子17を介して、二つの番組源を与え得て且つ主と画像内
画像表示フォーマットとの間をプログラミングする入力
をディスプレー25へ切り換えできる既知の画像内画像回
路30へ切換可能に結合される。プログラミング情報デー
タは、ディスプレー25において画像内画像回路30の出力
と組み合わされ得る文書又は図式的出力を与えるため
に、以下に詳細に説明するように、グラフィックス発生
器32と一緒にプロセッサ35により処理される。

15のブロック線図である。無線周波数ゴターダー10は無

無線周波数信号は、例えば、パケットを復調及び分離す
る同調器及び復調器６へ与えられる。パケット選択器７
が、ディジタル信号処理技術においては周知の技術を用
いて、（圧縮された）オーディオ／ビデオテレビジョン
番組パケットをプログラミング情報データパケットから
分離し、且つデータ減圧器８へ圧縮されたオーディオ／
ビデオテレビジョン番組パケットを与え、緩衝器９へプ
ログラミング情報データパケットを与える。データ減圧
器８は画像内画像回路30へ、緩衝器９を介して、テレビ
ジョンプログラミングのオーディオ及びビデオを与える
ために、オーディオ／ビデオテレビジョン番組データを
減圧する。ここでディジタル形態であるようなこの例に
おいてはオーディオ／ビデオテレビジョン番組データが
提供されるけれども、それはアナログ情報であり得て、
従って（プログラミング情報ディジタルデータを除き）
パケット選択器及びデータ減圧器に対する必要を除去す
ることは述べられねばならない。
【００１８】プログラミング情報データは、例えば情報
の範疇を提供するデータ分野内に配置された今後のテレ
ビジョン番組についての情報を含み得るテレビジョン番
組情報データから構成される。この方法においては（こ
こに組み込まれた参考文献にもっと詳細に記載されてい
るように）、表題、開始時刻、長さ、チャネル番号、反
復日、ロゴタイプ又は生き生きした挿絵、（鑑賞当たり
の支払いに対する）費用、（動揺させられる展示のため
の）再開始の数、開始の間の時間、番組の種類（すなわ
ちドラマ、コメディーその他）、及び番組の記述と批評
家の意見のようなその他の情報が与えられ得る。

ている。そのプロセッサは、それぞれ第１部分52、第２
部分54及び第３部分56を含むように、三つの部分へ形作
られた揮発性メモリへ書込／読取命令を設定し且つ制御
するために必要なメモリアドレス機能を実行するよにプ
ログラムされた、中央処理装置50を具えている。中央処
理装置50はまた、遠隔制御装置42を介して聴視者から正
及び負のフィードバックを受け取り、且つ以下に説明す
るように、メモリ部分52、54及び56の１個以上と一緒に
このフィードバックを使用するようにプログラムされて
いる。それに加えて、中央処理装置50は、メモリ部分5

情報データを、第１データベースとして記憶するために
メモリ部分52が用いられる。メモリ部分54は、ユーザに
より「好まれた」（すなわちそれに対してユーザが正の
フィードバックを与えた）、又はユーザにより「嫌われ
た」（すなわちそれに対してユーザが負のフィードバッ
クを与えた）として指示される第１データベースから選
択された記録を、第２データベースとして記憶するため
に用いられる。
【００２１】米国特許第5,047,867 号は、番組情報を含
んでいる記録の群の全体をユーザが拾い読みすることを
許容する、拡張されたチャネル環及び表示システムの使
用を記載している。これらの技術は（以下に記載される
その他のデータベースと同時に）第１データベース内に
記憶された情報を表示するためにも用いられ得る。拾い
読みモードの間に、聴視者は開始時刻(t) とチャネル(c
h)とを記入することにより、第１データベース内に記憶
されたテレビジョンプログラミング情報データ記録を連
続的に走査できる。この第１データベースは分野内にテ
レビジョンプログラミング情報を、各記録が時刻(t) と
チャネル(ch)とによりアクセスされ得るように記憶す
る。
【００２２】図４は拾い読み過程を説明するフローチャ
ートである。「好まれた」又は「嫌われた」指示が個別
の方法でなされ得る。拾い読み過程は第１データベース
（すなわちメモリ部分52）をアドレスすることを開始す
るように中央処理装置50へ指図する、遠隔制御装置42上
の「開始」又は「拾い読み」ボタンを聴視者が押した場
合に始まる（ステップ100)。聴視者がチャネル(ch)と時
刻(t) とを入力し（ステップ105)、それがそれからチャ
ネル(ch)と時刻(t) とを整合する分野を有する第１デー
タベース内に記憶されたテレビジョン情報データに索引
を付けるために用いられる。

聴視者により既知の仕方で制御され得て、選択されたデ
ータ記録が画像内画像回路30により与えられた画像の上
に重畳された文書又は図式に表された情報として表示さ
れ得るか、又は全体として画像内画像回路30により与え
られた画像に置き換えられ得る。これらの修正はここに
記載されたような本発明の変形として理解されねばなら
ない。
【００２４】選択されたテレビジョンプログラミング情
報記録を観察するに際して、聴視者はその時表示された
選択を「好む」か又は「嫌う」かどうかを記録できる
（ステップ115)。聴視者が入力できる正又は負のフィー
ドバックのどの種類でも表現するために「好む」及び
「嫌う」の語を用いる。例えば、「好む」の応答は（米
国特許第5,047,867 号に記載されたように）その番組が
記録されねばならぬことを示すボタンを聴視者が押すこ
とによりなされ得る。それはまた遠隔制御装置42上の
「好む」ボタンのキー押圧により単純になされ得る。
「好む」応答を入力することにより（ステップ125)、第
２データベース内の（メモリ部分54内の）その記録と一
緒に、フラグがその記録内に設定され且つそれから記憶
される。聴視者による負の応答は「嫌う」と印を付けら
れた遠隔制御装置42上のボタンを押圧することにより同
様になされ得て、それが第２データベース内の記録と共
に記憶された記録内に相当するフラグを設定する（ステ
ップ120)。その目的は第２データベースとして第１デー
タベースから選択された記録（すなわちテレビジョン番
組）のみを含んでいるデータベースを創造することであ
り、その第２データベースに対して聴視者は明瞭な好み
又は嫌悪を有する。
【００２５】表示された記録に対して「好む」または
「嫌う」を記録した後に、ユーザは時刻(t) を増加又は
減少し、且つチャネル(ch)を同じに維持することによ
り、異なる時刻において同じチャネルを有する記録を探
索することを継続でき（チャネル130)、あるいは同じ時
刻であるが異なるチャネルを有する全部の記録を（チャ
ネル(ch)を増加又は減少し、且つ時刻(t) を同じに維持
することにより）探索することができる。新しく選択さ
れたチャネル(ch)と時刻(t) との双方又はいずれか一方
がこの時第２記録を見つけ且つ聴視者にそれを表示する
ために用いられる。聴視者が意見を持たない（即ち「好
む」でも「嫌う」でもない）場合には、前の（又は次
の）記録を選択するために遠隔制御装置42上の「次／
前」を単純に押圧できる。実時間に聴視者がテレビジョ
ン番組を、観察と記録との双方又はいずれか一方をした
時にも、「好まれた」が自動的に第２データベース内に
記録され得る。言い換えれば、聴視者の意見において、
所定の時間の量（例えば少なくとも15分）より長い間
の、単にテレビジョン番組を観察することと記録するこ
ととの双方又はいずれか一方が、「好む」応答として自
動的に記録され且つ選択された番組に相当する第１デー
タベース内の記録を第２データベース内に記憶されるよ
うにする。
【００２６】第２データベースを発展させる目的は、メ
モリ部分56内に記憶された第３データベース内に個人専
用化されたテレビジョン番組情報データベースをユーザ
が発展させることを可能にすることである。この第３デ
ータベースは、第２データベース内に記憶され且つ「好
む」として指示された今後の番組か又は図５に記載され
た関心整合モードにおいて第１データベースから自動的
に選択された番組かのいずれかに相当する好適な番組の
みを観察するための選択を聴視者に許容するために、遠
隔制御装置42を介して聴視者によりアクセスされ得る。
【００２７】このユーザは遠隔制御装置42上のどちらか
の適切なボタンを押圧することによりこの過程を始める
ことができ（ステップ200)、あるいはこのモードはテレ
ビジョン受信機を単純にオンすることにより始められ得
て、すなわち毎回装荷されるテレビジョン番組データベ
ースが更新される。
【００２８】第２データベース内に記憶された記録を選
択した後に（ステップ210)、記録の文書概要を含んでい
る分野が既述の「自由文書」探索技術と、ここに組み込
まれた参考文献とに従って解析される（ステップ215)。
"a", "the"その他のような重要でない語は除去される。
残りの語はそれらの幹語に低減される（すなわち接頭辞
及び接尾辞が除去される）。各「好む」記録内の各幹語
は正の重みを与えられる。同時には「好む」ショー内の
幹語ではない各「嫌う」ショー内の各幹語は負の重みを
与えられる。これらの幹語と重みとによって、「単純な
質問」が第１データベース、すなわち装荷されるテレビ
ジョン番組データベースから与えられる全記録にわたっ
て実行される。
【００２９】「単純な質問」（ステップ220)において、
第１データベース内のあらゆる記録がそれが含む幹語に
対する重みを加算することにより（潜在的回復値に対し
て）採点される。全体得点がそれからそれぞれの文書記
録の長さに対して正規化される。付加的な技術がこの質
問、特にここに組み込まれたスタンフィル(Stanfill)及
びカーレ(Kahle）による参考文献内に記載さた「代理符
号化"surrogate cod-ing"」を加速するために用いられ
得る。最高の回復値（すなわち重み）を有する記録は提
案として取り上げられ、且つ第３データベース内で「好
む」として聴視者により実際にフラグを付けられた記録
と一緒に年代順に記憶される。この時第３データベース
は、第１データベース内に最初に記憶された装荷される
テレビジョンデータベースの個人専有化改作として、聴
視者によりアクセスされ得る。
【００３０】かくして、本発明は装荷されるテレビジョ
ン番組データベースの個人専有化改作を発生するため
に、例えば「自由文書」探索技術を用いる自動的仕方
で、ユーザの好みを相関させることをユーザに許容する
ための方法を提供する。
【００３１】双方向対話形システム（例えば双方向ケー
ブルテレビジョン、電話システムその他）の場合には、
図３のプロセッサとデータベースとが頭部端（ケーブル
テレビジョン会社又は電話会社）に置かれ得て、あるい
は頭部端とテレビジョンセットとの間に分配される。
【００３２】第１データベース52はテレビジョンショー
以外のもの（例えば生の演技）を含むように拡張され得
る。それらの書き上げがユーザの興味と整合する場合に
は、それらも第３の個人専有化されたデータベース56内
に含まれ得る。

    【特許請求の範囲】
  1. 【請求項１】 今後のテレビジョン番組の概要記録を具
    える電子的情報データベースを受信し、記憶し且つ表示
    するための手段を具えているシステムに用いるための個
    人専有化されたテレビジョン番組情報案内を提供する装
    置であって、 − 前記概要記録の最初に選択された記録に対して好み
    であるか嫌いであるかを選択し、且つ指示するための手
    段、 − 前記最初に選択された記録を記憶するための手段、 − 最初に探索された情報を分離するために前記最初に
    選択された記録を分析するための手段、 − 前記概要記録から次に選択された記録を選択するた
    めに前記最初に探索された情報を用いるための手段、及
    び − 前記次に選択された記録を前記個人専有化されたテ
    レビジョン番組情報案内を形成するように記憶するため
    の手段、 を具えていることを特徴とする個人専有化されたテレビ
    ジョン番組情報案内を提供する装置。
  2. 【請求項２】 前記解析手段が自由文書探索を実行する
    ための手段を具えていることを特徴とする請求項１記載
    の個人専有化されたテレビジョン番組情報案内を提供す
    る装置。
