The tape drive device has a tape cleaner 10 shown in FIG.
Was equipped with. This tape cleaner 10 was a prismatic body made of a ceramic such as single crystal sapphire, alumina or zirconia, and had a sharp cleaner edge 10a with an edge angle of about 60 to 80 °.

As shown in FIG. 2, the tape cleaner 10 is arranged so that the cleaner edge 10a slides on the tape T at a constant angle, and when the tape T is fed in the direction of the arrow, the deposits on the surface are removed by the cleaner edge 10a. It was supposed to be removed.

Also, as shown in FIG. 3, a tape cleaner having a regular triangular prism shape.
The one in which three cleaner edges 11a were formed in 11 was also used.

However, with the conventional tape cleaners 10 and 11 as described above, it is inevitable that minute chipping will occur when the sharp cleaner edges 10a and 11a are formed by polishing, and when handling or using after processing. Also in the above, since the cleaner edges 10a and 11a are sharp edges, chipping is likely to occur.

If you continue to use the tape cleaners 10 and 11 with minute chippings on the cleaner edges 10a and 11a in this way, the chipping will gradually increase, not only the cleaning effect will deteriorate, but finally the tape surface will be scratched. There was a problem of putting it on.

Therefore, the conventional tape cleaners 10 and 11 have to be replaced with new ones for a relatively short period of time so as not to damage the tape, which is troublesome.

The tape cleaner 1 shown in FIG. 1 (a) is a perspective view and FIG. 1 (b) is an end view. The tape cleaner 1 is a prismatic body made of ceramics such as alumina and zirconia. One vertex is a cleaner edge 1a.

In order to obtain the optimum value of the radius of curvature R of the cleaner edge 1a, tape cleaners 1 having various radiuses of curvature R as shown in Table 1 were prototyped and tested. The tape cleaner was made of alumina having a purity of 99.7% and an average crystal grain size of 2 μm, and had an edge angle of 60 °. The tape cleaner was assembled in a tape drive device under the same conditions to perform an acceleration test.

The cleaning effect and the time until scratches on the tape that would cause damage to normal use were examined.
The results are shown in Table 1.

From Table 1, the curvature radius R of the No. 1 cleaner edge 1a is 5μ.
The m-thick film had an excellent cleaning effect, but chipping was likely to occur, and the tape was scratched after a relatively short time of use. On the other hand, when the radius of curvature R of the cleaner edge 1a of NO.

In the case of 10 to 25 μm, the time until the scratch on the tape was generated was 142 to 172 hours, and the cleaning effect was excellent.

Next, the curvature radius R of the cleaner edge 1a is set to 10 μm, the material of the tape cleaner 1 is changed to various ceramics,
The same test as above was performed. The results are shown in Table 2.

As shown in Table 2, those formed from zirconia of Nos. 1 and 2 have high strength of zirconia itself and an average grain size of 0.
Since it was as small as 5 μm, it was excellent in chipping resistance, and it was possible to lengthen the time until the tape was scratched.

Moreover, the average crystal grain size of alumina made of NO.4 is 5
Since it was as large as μm, chipping resistance was poor and the time until scratches were formed on the tape was short. Since the smaller the crystal grain size, the better the chipping resistance, it was found from the above experimental results that the tape cleaner 1 having an average crystal grain size of less than 5 μm is superior.

In the above embodiment, only the tape cleaner 1 having the shape shown in FIGS. 1 (a) and (b) has been described, but the same applies to the regular triangular prism shown in FIG. 3 and other shapes. Needless to say.

As described above, according to the present invention, since the cleaner edge of the tape cleaner has a minute curved surface with a radius of curvature of 10 to 25 μm, chipping of the cleaner edge is less likely to occur during polishing or during use. It is possible to provide a high-performance tape cleaner that can be used for a long time without damaging the tape while maintaining the tape cleaning effect.
