More specifically, the present invention relates to an optical coupling element for optical fiber used as an optical coupling element. Here, the optical fiber optical coupling element is an element that couples a plurality of optical fibers and passes light between them, or an element that branches light from an optical fiber to a plurality of optical fibers. (2) Prior art and its problems As a plastic optical coupling device, an optical waveguide for optical fibers with a two-layer cladding structure using UV-curable acrylic resin has been reported (Symposium on Organic Materials for Intermediate Optics and Electronics). 1985, May 1-2). This optical waveguide for optical fiber has different refractive index.
Although the core and cladding are molded using UV-curable acrylic resin, the insertion loss is still high and the branching characteristics between outputs lack uniformity, so it cannot be said to be satisfactory as a practical optical coupling device. Nakatsuta. Furthermore, a method has been disclosed (Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 156204/1983) in which light loss is prevented by depositing an intermediate layer of a thin metal film between the inner layer and the outer layer at a bent portion where the bending angle is large. However, since the metal thin film is deposited, there are problems with the equipment.
The results were not satisfactory due to the complexity of the manufacturing process. OBJECT OF THE INVENTION The object of the present invention is to solve the problems of the prior art described above, and to provide an optical coupling device for optical fiber that can be used as a practical optical coupling device and has low insertion loss and uniform branching characteristics between outputs. Our goal is to provide the following. A further object of the present invention is to provide an optical coupling element for optical fiber that is easy to manufacture and inexpensive. Structure of the Invention In order to achieve the above-mentioned object, an optical coupling element for optical fibers of the present invention is an optical coupling element used as an element for optical coupling by interposing the end faces of a plurality of optical fibers. a branch-like inner layer extending from the end faces of the plurality of optical fibers in a direction connecting the end faces, an outer layer having a lower refractive index than the inner layer surrounding the inner layer, and an inner layer between the inner layer and the outer layer; The structure includes a refractive index matching liquid coated with a refractive index between the outer layer and the outer layer. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the refractive index matching liquid consists of matching oil. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the thickness of the thin film formed by the matching oil is from 1 μm to 20 μm. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION FIG. 1 is a block diagram of an optical fiber optical coupling element according to an embodiment of the present invention. Figures 2 and 3
The figures show longitudinal sections of AA' and BB', respectively. This is a branching element that branches the light emitted from the optical fiber 10 into the optical fibers 11 and 12.
It is also an element that couples to 0. Optical fiber 10,1
Inner layer 13 and outer layer 15 connecting between 1 and 12, matching oil 14 as a refractive index matching liquid provided between inner layer 13 and outer layer 15, and matching layer 1
It is composed of 6, 17, and 18. The refractive index of the matching oil 14 is the refractive index of the inner layer 13 and the outer layer 1.
It has a refractive index between 5 and 5. In the conventional case, the above-mentioned refractive index matching liquid was not provided and the structure was two-layered. FIG. 4 is a diagram showing the state of light propagation in a conventional optical coupling element. When light is incident on the center of the end face of the optical coupling element at an incident angle θ 0 , it propagates through the optical coupling element while undergoing total reflection at the interface between the core 19 and the cladding 20. The condition for total internal reflection is given by COSθ'> n 3 > n 1 . Now, if an interface irregularity as shown in FIG. 4 occurs between the core 19 and the cladding 20, light will pass through the cladding 20 and leak out of the optical coupling element, resulting in optical loss. On the other hand, in the case of this embodiment, as shown in FIG. 5, the optical coupling element has a structure in which a matching oil 14 is applied as a refractive index matching liquid, and there is no interfacial irregularity between the inner layer 13 and the matching oil 14. Even if this occurs, the light can be totally reflected between the matching oil 14 and the outer layer 15, and the light will propagate within the inner layer 13.
Therefore, in the case of this embodiment, light leakage is reduced and optical loss can be reduced. Further, by further providing matching layers 16, 17, 18 between the optical fibers 10, 11, 12 and the inner layer 13, the coupling loss between the optical fiber and the optical coupling element can be reduced, leading to a reduction in optical loss. There is. As a method for manufacturing an optical coupling element, a Y-shaped pattern with a line width approximately equal to the outer diameter of an optical fiber and a branching angle smaller than the total reflection angle of light is created on a transfer film surface, and this is transferred onto a negative film. A negative film and a photoresist are brought into close contact with each other, exposed to ultraviolet rays, and then washed to create a Y-shaped convex pattern (master mold) with a rectangular cross section. A Y-shaped pattern is created from silicone rubber by vacuum casting using a master mold. An optical fiber with a polished end face is inserted into each groove of a Y-shaped concave pattern made of silicone rubber. Note that matching oil is loaded on the end face of the optical fiber. This matching oil is used as a refractive index matching liquid, and is preferably silicone oil. A predetermined amount of high refractive index UV-curable acrylic resin for the inner layer is poured into the groove and cured. Next, as a refractive index matching liquid on this entire surface,
A matching oil having a refractive index between the high refractive index UV-cured acrylic resin for the inner layer and the low-refractive index UV-cured acrylic resin for the outer layer is applied to form a uniform film. Furthermore, for the outer layer, a low refractive index UV-curable acrylic resin is injected into the entire surface and cured. After curing, remove from the silicone rubber mold,
Apply matting oil to the other side in the same way.
Molding the outer layer. Note that both sides may be processed at the same time. The thickness of the thin film formed by applying matching oil as a refractive index matching liquid is 1 μm to 20 μm, preferably about 7 μm. There are no particular restrictions on the thickness or shape of the outer layer. A thin film of refractive index matching liquid is achieved by vertically standing the inner layer of UV-cured acrylic resin after hardening after applying matching oil. The matching oil used as the refractive index matching liquid is preferably silicone oil. The matting oils used in this example are, for example, those commercially available under the names OF-35A to 39C (manufactured by Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd.). Example Optical fiber...-plastic optical fiber of φ1.0mm Inner layer...UV-cured acrylic resin with n 1 = 1.556 Refractive index matching liquid...n 2 = Matching oil with 1.458 Outer layer... UV-cured acrylic resin with n 3 = 1.449 Using this method, we fabricated a two-branch optical coupling device with a rectangular cross-section with a branching angle ψ = 17° and an inner layer width of 1 mm, and compared the insertion loss Ls and uniformity η between the two output boards with conventional products. Define Ls=-10log 10 (P 2 + P 3 /P 1 ) η=-10log 10 (P 3 /P 2 ). Here, P 1 is the optical power of the input port, P 2 , P 3
indicates the optical power of the output port due to branching. Table 1 shows a comparison between the conventional product and the two-branch optical coupling device according to this example.

造が簡単で安価である。[Table] As shown in Table 1, by providing a matching liquid between the inner layer and outer layer of the optical coupling element, an optical coupling element with low insertion loss and excellent output uniformity between output ports can be obtained. It will be done. Further, the materials used are not limited to those shown in this example as long as they achieve the technical idea of the present invention. Specific Effects of the Invention As mentioned above, by using a thin film using a refractive index matching liquid in the optical coupling element, insertion loss and branching loss (uniformity of optical output between output ports) are lower than in conventional optical coupling elements. We have succeeded in realizing an optical coupling device for optical fibers with very little loss. The optical fiber optical coupling device according to the present invention can also be used as an optical signal branching circuit device for monitoring optical signals from a database and for optical measurement in a local area network (LAN). Furthermore, the optical fiber optical coupling device of the present invention is easy to manufacture and inexpensive.
