<Technical Field> The present invention relates to a gradation recording method, and more particularly to a gradation recording method using dots of at least two different densities for one color. <Prior Art> As a method for recording gradation images by binary recording of dots or no dots, a technique called a dither method or a density pattern method is generally used. That is, this is a method of expressing gradation by controlling the number of dots placed in a unit matrix according to input density data. When trying to express multiple gradations using these methods, it is necessary to increase the size of the dot matrix, which has the disadvantage of reducing resolution and making the texture of the matrix pattern stand out, degrading image quality. Ta. For this reason, a method has been proposed in which gradation is expressed using at least two types of dots, light and dark, for the same color. For example, Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 58-39468 proposes a method of expressing gradation by using light and shade dots and changing the number of dots in a dot matrix. However, this conventional example has the disadvantage that the number of gradations that can be expressed is small because the gradations are expressed only by the number of dots. <Purpose> The present invention simultaneously controls not only the number of dark and light dots but also the overlap between the dots.
The purpose of the present invention is to provide a gradation recording method capable of recording multiple gradations even when using a small dot matrix. That is, in the present invention, even if the number of dark and light dots is the same,
By actively utilizing the difference in recording density caused by changing the overlapping direction, multi-gradation expression is achieved. <Example> Hereinafter, an example of the present invention will be described in detail based on the drawings. FIG. 1 shows an example of the configuration of an inkjet printer embodying the present invention. In the figure, for example, the first
~Second multi-nozzle heads 2-1 and 2-2 are arranged and eject dark and light inks, respectively. Ink of various concentrations is supplied from the tank 4, and drive signals are transmitted through flexible insulating belts 5-1 to 5-2, each having a large number of conductive wires arranged and buried therein, a relay terminal board 6, and a general power supply belt 7. supply each. The carriage 1 having such a configuration is mounted on two guide rails 8, and an endless belt 9 connected thereto is driven by a pulse motor 10 to move the carriage 1 to the point x in the figure.
Main scanning is performed by reciprocating the recording paper 12 in the direction shown in FIG. , an image is recorded on the recording paper 12 using ink of each density ejected from each of the multi-nozzle heads 2-1 to 2-2. In addition, stoppers 11-1 and 11-2 are arranged at both ends of the reciprocating path of the carriage 1 to determine the main scanning range. FIG. 2 shows the configuration of a dot pattern generator that generates an ON-OFF binary signal to be supplied to the head of the above-mentioned inkjet printer. The timing circuit 16 generates pulse signals called an X pulse and a Y pulse, and these serve as step pulses for the X counter 17 and Y counter 18, respectively, and are also sent to the printer 21 and used as timing signals during printing. Ru. The X pulse and Y pulse are also simultaneously supplied to an input device (not shown) and are used as timing signals for sending input density data to a dot pattern generator. X counter 17 and Y counter 18
is a counter for generating an X address signal and a Y address signal indicating which cell in the dot matrix is selected. For example, when a 3×3 dot matrix is used, both the X counter 17 and the Y counter 18 are used. Both are set to ternary counters. Light dot pattern memory 1
9 and the dark dot pattern memory 20 use input density data, X address, and Y address as address signals, and store light dot data of ON-OFF2 values, respectively.
This is a memory that outputs dark dot data, and data is written in accordance with a predetermined dot arrangement configuration. The printer 21 is a printer as shown in FIG. 1, and receives the supplied light dot data, dark dot data, X pulse,
The Y pulse causes the inkjet head 2-1,
Ink jetting from 2-2 and pulse motor 1
0 control etc. are performed. The reflection density (OD value) will not be the same when dark ink dots and light ink dots are overprinted at the same position on the recording paper, and when they are hit at different positions; the OD value will be higher when they are placed side by side. . The reason for this is that when overprinting, the amount of ink that is ejected at the same position increases and the dot area expands, but the amount of the dot spread is small.Especially in inkjet printers, recording paper with good absorbency generally Because of this, the dots do not spread too much even if the amount of ink increases, and even in areas where dark and light inks overlap, the dye penetrates into the paper in the depth direction, resulting in OD.
It is possible that the value is smaller than the sum of the OD values of the dots of each density. Therefore, if this effect is utilized, multiple gradations can be expressed even using a small dot matrix, and high-quality prints with high resolution and gradation can be obtained. The number of gradation levels that can be expressed using this recording method is given by the following equation. T=1/2 l-1 -1)! (m・n+2 l-1 -1)! /(
m・n)! However, T: the number of gradation levels expressed by the dot matrix, n·n: the dot matrix size, l: the number of multivalued values (l=3 for 2 types of agricultural and tanning, l=4 for 3 types). The table below shows the number of gradations that can be expressed using this formula when changing the matrix size and the number of multi-value levels.

た。[Table] Figure 3 shows an example of how to place dots when the matrix size is 2 x 2 and l = 3. In the case of binary recording using one type of ink, only 5 gradations could be expressed, but by changing the difference in the overlap of dots with dark and light ink, it is possible to express as many as 35 gradations in a 2 x 2 matrix. This makes it possible to record the key. The number of recordable gradations can be dramatically increased by increasing the dot matrix size and the number of multi-values. When actually writing data into the dot pattern memories 19 and 20, for example, print gray scale patches with a dot pattern as shown in FIG. 3, measure the OD value of each patch, and
Sort the dot patterns in descending order of OD value, match the input density data to the dot pattern, and create a dot pattern that matches human visual sensitivity, that is, so that the OD value of the print has a linear relationship with the input density data. All you have to do is write the data to memory. Although the above embodiments have been described using monochromatic dots, this can of course be extended to color, and can be realized by using dots for each of Y, M, and C. Further, in this embodiment, an inkjet printer has been described as an example, but it is of course applicable to any type of printer that forms an image using dots, such as a thermal transfer printer. <Effects> As explained above, by using dots of at least two types of shading for each color and controlling the number and overlap of dots in the dot matrix, multi-gradation recording is possible without reducing resolution. Summer.
