Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide an electrical connector for a base board to miniaturize and densify an equipment by lowering a projection height from the surface of the base board of the electrical connector and to increase the reliability of a surface mounting part for making a connection between a terminal and the base board at the time of fitting the connector. CONSTITUTION: An electrical connector includes a male connector 60 and a female connector 2. An electrical terminal 30 of the male connector 60 and the female connector 2 has surface mounting parts 38 and 86 extending outwardly from a bottom face 22 of an insulating housing 4 or medial portions of side faces 12 and 66. The bottom parts of the connectors 60 and 2 are inserted into holes provided in printed boards 50 and 90 so that the surface mounting parts 38 and 86 abut on circuit pads 54 and 92 of the printed boards 50 and 90.

2. Description of the Related Art As electrical or electronic parts are miniaturized, in the market, especially in products such as laptop computers, printing is performed without interfering with parts mounted on a printed board (board). Means have been sought to place the plates as close together as possible. These boards are generally interconnected by mating connectors mounted on each board, one half of the connector being attached to one board and the other half being the other board. Mounted on. By reducing the height of each connector, the spacing between the printed boards can be reduced, but the height of the connectors is no longer reduced.

As shown in FIG. 1, the female connector 2 is suitable for mounting on a printed board 50 as shown in FIG. 10 or 12.
In FIG. 10, the female connector 2 is attached to the printed board 50, and the housing 4 projects through the opening (hole) 52 (FIG. 12). The lower surface 40 of the surface mount portion 38 is electrically connected to the circuit pad 54 of the printed board 50. The hole 52 is an opening that penetrates, but a hole that does not penetrate is referred to as a hole here.

As shown in FIGS. 10 and 12, the housing 4 extends downward from the upper surface 56 of the printed board 50. As a result, the vertical distance between the mating surface 6 of the housing 4 and the upper surface 56 of the printed board 50 is significantly reduced. As mentioned above
It is desirable to reduce the distance between printed circuit boards mounted in parallel. Therefore, it is desirable to reduce the vertical distance Y1 between the top surface of the connector and the top surface 56 of the printed board 50. By thus retracting the connector into the opening 52 of the printed board 50, the surface mount type or through-hole type terminal is projected from the lower surface of the housing, and thus the printed board 50 is formed.
This distance is greatly reduced compared to the connector mounted on top.

FIG. 9 shows the male terminal 80. The male terminal 80 has a tab 82 on the upper side, and at this portion, an electrical connection is made with the facing contact portion 32 described above. The tab 82 extends vertically upward from a lower base portion 84, and the base portion is electrically connected to a mounting portion (surface mounting portion) 86 for surface mounting via an interconnection portion 88. As shown in FIG. 8, the base portion 84 is located outside the housing 62 and near the lower surface 70 thereof. As a result, like the female connector 2 shown in FIG. 1, the mounting portion 86 is positioned outside the housing 62 along the side wall 66. The male terminal 80 shown in FIG. 9 can be changed like the electric terminals (30, 130, 230) shown in FIGS. 5 to 7 by changing the length of the interconnection part 88 and moving the mounting part 86 up and down.

FIG. 12 shows a state in which the male connector 60 is electrically connected to the printed board 90. The housing 62 is recessed in the opening (hole) 83 of the printed board 90. The surface mounting legs 86 are electrically connected to the circuit pads 92 of the printed board 90. By changing the above-mentioned electrical connection system from the position shown in FIG. 10 to the position shown in FIG. 11, the vertical distance Y2 between the opposed printed boards 50 and 90 shown in FIG. 11 can be reduced.

It should be understood that different vertical distances Y2 can be obtained by changing the electrical terminals according to the techniques disclosed in the present invention. It should also be understood that the printed board can take various forms depending on the shape of the male and female connectors. For example, as shown in FIG. 11, the female connector 2 is drawn under the printed board 50. In this way, low-profile electric components can be made to project on the lower surface 58 of the printed board 50, as shown in FIG.
As indicated by Y3, the distance between the lower surface of the printed board 50 and the bottom surface 22 of the female connector 2 is not wasted. Further upper surface 56 and 96
Various parts can be placed in the space between them and it is not wasteful.

FIG. 13 shows a terminal 330 of another embodiment. It can be used in place of the terminal 30 shown in FIGS. 4-7 when thermal expansion and contraction of the terminal is a problem. As shown in FIG. 13, the terminal 33
0 includes the spring arm 331 in the reverse orientation. Spring arm 331 is integral with contact arm (surface mount) 338 or 339. The spring arm 331 in the opposite direction allows the connector to move largely without cracking the solder connection between the terminal 330 and the electric circuit pad of the printed board.
This shape can also be used for the male terminal 80 shown in FIGS. 8 and 9.

The vertical distance from the upper surface of the substrate to the mating surface of the connector, that is, the amount of protrusion can be shortened, and the equipment can be made compact and high-density. Further, the force applied to the connector at the time of fitting the connector is received so that the terminal presses the substrate, so that the surface mounting portion (soldered portion) of the terminal does not peel off from the substrate.
