Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain high luminance and high resolution by synthesizing a transmission light from each liquid crystal panel by a prism means, and observing an enlarged image of a color image by a lens means. CONSTITUTION:An R transmission light from a liquid crystal panel 1 is reflected by a joint surface 8a of a first prism 8 or a joint surface 11b of a fourth prism 11 and emitted from the prism 11, a B transmission light from a liquid crystal panel 2 is reflected by a joint surface 9a of a second prism 9 or a joint surface 11a of the prism 11 and emitted from the prism 11, and a G transmission light from a liquid crystal panel 3 travels straight as it is in a third and a fourth prisms 10, 11 and is emitted from the prism 11. In that case, the panels 1, 2 and 3 are positioned exactly and attached to each incident surface so that optical axes in emitting ends of each R, G and B transmission light coincide with each other, therefore, each transmission comes to be synthesized, and accordingly, a color image 14 by the panels 1, 2 and 3 appears on the emitting surface of the prism 11. Subsequently, this color image is made incident on a convex lens 12, by which a color enlarged image 15 is observed.

(c) Problems to be Solved by the Invention Since the conventional example described above is a monochrome display using a single monochrome liquid crystal panel, it is conceivable to convert it into a color display. In this case, it seems that color display can be achieved relatively easily by using a single liquid crystal panel with built-in R (red), G (green), and B (blue) stripe filters.

However, in order to realize color images with sufficiently high resolution using this method, a liquid crystal panel with high density and a high number of pixels is required, but considering that the liquid crystal panel used is small (about 1 inch), , its production is extremely difficult;
Another disadvantage is that the light transmittance is greatly reduced and sufficient brightness cannot be obtained.

(1) is a transmissive liquid crystal panel with an R filter attached to its front, and (2) and (3) are B and G filters attached in the same way. Transmissive liquid crystal panels (4), (5), and (6) are cold cathode flat fluorescent lamp type backlights arranged on the back of each liquid crystal panel, (7)
The three incident planes are (1) (2) on each of the above liquid crystal panels.
(3) is a prism means for color synthesis arranged to face each other, and (12) is a convex lens for magnification arranged on its exit surface.

The prism means (7) includes four triangular prisms (8) whose cross section is an isosceles triangle as shown in FIG.
(11) are attached to each other, and the first prism (

A B reflective film is formed on one joint surface (9a) of the prism (9), and a B reflective film and an R reflective film are formed on the joint surfaces (lla and llb) of the fourth prism (11), respectively. However, the third prism (10) has a structure in which no reflective film is formed on both the joint surfaces (10a) and (10b). Note that each of these prisms (8) to (11) is pasted with a transparent adhesive having approximately the same refractive index as the prism.

Therefore, according to this structure, as can be seen from FIG. 1, the R transmitted light from the liquid crystal panel (1) is transmitted through the first prism (
8) or the cemented surface (1, 1, b) of the fourth prism (11) and is reflected by the fourth prism (11).
The B transmitted light from the liquid crystal panel (2) is emitted from the joint surface (9a) of the second prism (9) or the fourth prism (1).
1) is reflected at the joint surface (lla) of the fourth prism (1).
1), the G transmitted light from the liquid crystal panel (3) travels straight through the third and fourth prisms (10) and (11), and exits from the fourth prism (11).

At that time, the liquid crystal panels (1), (2), and (3) are accurately positioned on each incident surface of the prism means (7) so that the optical axes of the RGB transmitted lights at the output ends coincide with each other. Since the above-mentioned transmitted light is combined,
Therefore, a color image (14) from the liquid crystal panels (1), (2), and (3) appears on the exit surface of the fourth prism (11). When this color image is incident on the convex lens (12), an enlarged color image (15) is observed.

Note that each liquid crystal panel (1), (2), and (3) is driven by a well-known method used in ordinary liquid crystal televisions, but now the direction of arrow A in Fig. 1 is the direction of the liquid crystal panel (3). Assuming that it is a vertical scanning direction, the vertical scanning directions of the liquid crystal panels (1) and (2) are opposite to each other as indicated by arrows B and C, respectively.
