Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a flexible moisture detector which can be readily handled by using an optical fiber sensor, and changing the position of moisture detection. CONSTITUTION:Light is emitted from a light emitting diode (LED) 4 with the output of a LED driving circuit 3. The reflected light returns to a photodiode 5 through an optical fiber sensor 2. The LED 4, the optical fiber sensor 2 and the photodiode 5 are optically connected with an optical connector 6. When moisture is not attached to a U-shaped detecting part S of the optical sensor 2, the light is also reflected from the U-shaped part and returned from one side to the other side. When the moisture is attached, the light in the core is emitted to the outside. Therefore, the amount of the light returning to the photodiode 5 is decreased. The signal of the reflected light from the optical fiber sensor 2 is amplified in a signal detecting/comparing circuit 7 and compared with a preset value. The signal indicating the presence or absence of the moisture is sent into a display-lamp driving circuit 8 and a buzzer driving circuit 9. When the moisture is present, a display lamp 10 is lit and simultaneously a buzzer 11 is sounded.

The core 15 is surrounded by a cladding (low refractive index material) 16 and is further covered with a protective sheath 17. A detection portion S is formed by removing a certain length of the protective sheath 17 and bending the exposed core portion 180 degrees into a U-shape as shown in FIG. After this bending, it is desirable to fix the folded portion with the protective sheath remaining with a heat shrink tube 18 or the like.

In the optical fiber sensor 2, when moisture does not adhere to the U-shaped detection part S (in the air), the light is also reflected at the U-shaped part and returns from one side to the other as shown in Fig. 5, but as shown in Fig. 6. When moisture adheres to a part of the detection part S, such as the tip, the light inside the core is emitted to the outside, so the amount of light returning to the photodiode 5 shown in FIG. 1 decreases, and by measuring this decrease, it can be determined that the moisture The presence or absence can be detected.
