Optical waveguides 15, 16, and 17 are formed on the surface of a substrate 14 having an electro-optic effect so as to form a Y branch. Electrodes 18 and 19 are provided at the branch portions of these optical waveguides, and these electrodes are further connected to electrode pads 20 and 21 at the ends of the substrate, and a voltage is applied between these electrode pads 20 and 21 from the outside. (For example, Nakane, Mitsunaga, Haruna, Koyama, "LiNbO 3 single-mode optical branching switch and its integration" IEICE Optical and Quantum Electronics Research Group Material OQE81-
54 (1981)) It is well known that an element with such a structure can function as a total internal reflection type optical switch. That is, when light is incident from the optical waveguide 15, the light travels straight toward the optical waveguide 16 when no voltage is applied from the outside. On the other hand, when a voltage is applied from the outside, the electric field generated between the electrodes 18 and 19 causes a change in the refractive index based on the electro-optic effect at the branched portion of the optical waveguide, and the incident light on the optical waveguide 15 is transferred to the optical waveguide 17. be bent towards. Optical switching is therefore possible.

An impedance mismatch occurs between the two, and the power of the external switching signal is not efficiently supplied to the electrode section. Therefore, ultrahigh-speed switching operations are not possible with such a device.

Therefore, high-frequency electrical signals can be supplied to the electrodes from an external power source using a coaxial cable. In addition, by selecting the characteristic impedance of the microstrip line and the resistance value of the terminating chip resistor to be equal to the characteristic impedance of the coaxial cable, we can reduce the impedance mismatch between the external power supply and the electrodes to a mismatch value based on the electrode capacitance. can be made as small as possible, allowing ultra-fast switching operation over a fairly wide frequency range.

とができ、超高速スイツチングが可能となる。 High-frequency electrical signals are normally supplied by coaxial cables, but electrical signals can be easily transmitted from coaxial cables by connecting the center conductor and outer conductor of the coaxial cable to the center conductor 8 and ground conductor 12 of the microstrip line, respectively. can be supplied to the electrodes 5 and 6. The characteristic impedance of a microstrip line is determined by the dielectric constant and thickness of the dielectric substrate 7, and the width of the center conductor 8, so the width of the center conductor 8 is selected appropriately for a given dielectric substrate. It can thereby be made equal to the characteristic impedance of the coaxial cable (for example 50Ω).
If a chip resistor 9 is connected between the center conductor 8 of the microstrip line and the ground conductor 10, and its resistance value is chosen equal to the characteristic impedance of the microstrip line, the impedance seen from the terminal 13 will be that of the microstrip line. This is the characteristic impedance of the pulley line plus the capacitance between the electrodes 5 and 6 in parallel. As the frequency of the switching electrical signal increases, the impedance mismatch increases due to the capacitance between the electrodes 5 and 6, but since the electrode capacitance of an optical switch like the present invention can be set to about 1PF, The 3dB bandwidth can be as high as 5-6GHz, enabling ultra-fast switching.

Therefore, an ultra-high frequency switching electric signal can be efficiently supplied to the electrodes without reflection due to discontinuity of the connection portion, and ultra-high speed switching operation can be performed. Furthermore, since it is easy to connect the microstrip line and the coaxial cable, it is possible to easily supply ultra-high frequency switching electrical signals to the optical switch using the coaxial cable.
