Abstract

PURPOSE:To readily obtain a heat insulating structure having excellent shape retention and heat insulating properties by calcining and carbonizing an extrusion molded article comprising carbon black in fluffy state, carbon fiber chop, thermally volatile substance and binder in a given ratio. CONSTITUTION:Carbon black in fluffy state (not granulated and in finely granulated state) is blended with 5-20wt.% carbon fiber chop. 100 pts.wt. of the blend is kneaded with 30-200 pts.wt. thermally volatile substance and a binder. Then the kneaded material is extrusion-molded, calcined and carbonized.

As a high-temperature heat insulating material based on carbon black, a granular heat insulating material in which vitreous carbon is formed and adhered to the surface layer of a carbon black pellet has been developed by the applicant (Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 14108/1982). This carbon black-based insulation material is lightweight, has excellent insulation performance in high-temperature ranges exceeding 1000°C, and is highly fluid, making it useful as a fill-type insulation material. However, on the other hand, it does not have self-forming properties. It has the disadvantage that it cannot be shaped freely due to relationships.

Since carbon black originally has a chain structure in which extremely fine spherical particles with a diameter of 10 to 200 nm are fused or secondarily aggregated, carbon black itself has inherent heat insulating properties. Therefore, it is possible to mold this by shaping it with a binder such as a thermosetting resin or tar pitch and then firing it, but in order to maintain the strength to withstand handling, it is necessary to add a large amount of binder. Therefore, there is a problem in that the heat insulating performance inherent to carbon black is significantly impaired.
