(Prior art) In horizontal continuous casting of nonferrous metals, especially copper, copper alloys, and copper-containing alloys, conventionally, as shown in Fig. 2,
A water passage frame 2 is connected to the outside of a horizontal copper mold 1, and a graphite sleeve 3 having a lubricating function is fitted inside the water-cooled mold, and the sleeve 3 is tapered and butt-fitted to the end face of the feed nozzle 4 of the tundish. A horizontal mold assembly is used. In this continuous casting, the surface of the slab becomes rough and its surface quality deteriorates, regardless of the use of a graphite sleeve.

(Means for solving the problem) Unlike other continuous casting methods, horizontal continuous casting has a structure in which the tundish and mold are directly connected.
The state of solidified shell formation cannot be determined by visually observing the flow of molten metal into the mold. The causes of surface roughness on slabs are complex and diverse, depending on the condition of the surface roughness, the location where it occurs, etc., but as a result of our investigation, the most probable conclusion in the case of the above continuous casting is that it is the starting point of solidified shell formation from the molten metal. In normal continuous casting, this is the position of the inner end that first contacts the copper water-cooled mold, so it is thought to be near the corresponding position inside the graphite sleeve. As it moves closer to the tundish side, a solidified shell begins to form inside the feed nozzle, and since the feed nozzle is a refractory material with a rough surface, the slab is drawn in contact with the rough surface. In the case of horizontal continuous casting of nonferrous alloys containing copper, the direct cause and remote cause are
It was discovered that this is due to the fact that heat is removed from the molten metal quite rapidly due to heat conduction through the mold and sleeve.

The present invention was devised based on this knowledge as a measure to prevent surface roughness of the slab.In order to reduce the heat loss from the inlet of the molten metal into the mold, the present invention was developed by installing a tundish side near the boundary between the graphite sleeve and the copper mold. The key points are to provide a heat transfer barrier at an appropriate location, and to provide a gap with an appropriate gap size as this barrier. In other words, the horizontal continuous casting mold of the present invention has a gap between the inner periphery of the copper mold and the outer periphery of the graphite sleeve fitted inside the copper mold over a range of up to 1/2 of the length of the mold on the inflow side of the molten metal.
It is characterized by having a gap of 0.1 to 0.2 mm.

Hereinafter, the present invention will be explained in detail with reference to the embodiment shown in FIG. In FIG. 1, a copper mold 1 is fitted with a water-permeable frame 2 on the outside thereof to be water-tight and connected to a mold flange 1', and is cooled by water passage.
The inside of the mold 1 is formed by widening the molten metal inflow side with the flange 1' by about 0.1 to 0.2 mm within 1/2 of the mold length. Fit the sleeve 3, align the stepped part 3' with the mold flange 1', and then align the tapered part 3'' on the outer periphery of the inner end of the sleeve with the tapered end 4' on the inner periphery of the feed nozzle 4 on the tundish side for a taper fit. Assemble the mold assembly. In the assembled state, a gap 5 with a gap size of 0.1 to 0.2 mm is created between the outer circumference of the graphite sleeve 3 and the mold inner circumference 1''. If this gap 5 is made extremely large, cracks will occur in the sleeve 3. , the gap between the gaps is 0.2mm to avoid problems during use.
The following are suitable: Furthermore, if the gap is extremely small, the heat transfer blocking effect will be reduced and handling will be difficult, so it is better to set it to 0.1 mm or more. Further, the length of the gap 5 should be about 1/2 or less of the mold length; if it is longer than this, the length of the fit will be shortened, causing operational problems.

(Function) According to the present invention, by providing the gap 5, the cooling ability of the graphite sleeve 3 at that part is reduced, and the start of solidification is delayed, so that the formation start point of the solidified shell is shifted from the center of the sleeve toward the latter half. As a result, coagulation will not occur within the feed nozzle, and roughening of the surface will be prevented.

(Embodiment) In addition to the embodiment shown in FIG. 1, the gap 5 can be provided by reducing the diameter of the graphite sleeve 3 at that portion. Further, it is also possible to provide both the mold 1 and the sleeve 3 in a shared manner.

At the same time, the life of the graphite sleeve has been extended. This means that the slab whose surface has been roughened by the feed nozzle will not rub against the sleeve and be pulled out, and that solidification within the sleeve will not damage the mold assembly. This is also indirect evidence that the statement was correct.
