There are possible ways. In the former method, multiple sets of electrode layers are required, making the device structure extremely complicated, and the characteristics tend to be unstable. - In the latter case, it is a practical method from the viewpoint of simplicity of device structure and stability of characteristics. however,
If the pattern is large, it is possible to form each phosphor thin film layer using a metal mask, but if the pattern is fine, it is practically difficult to form it using a metal mask.

Therefore, it is considered desirable to use a physical method (dry etching) for etching the sulfide thin film, but there is no method for etching thin films containing CaS or SrS as main components at a sufficient speed and with good reproducibility. Therefore, it has been extremely difficult to realize a multicolor thin film EL device.

A substrate 4 on which a CaS thin film is formed is placed on the cathode 2 . A photoresist patterned in stripes is applied to the CaS thin film. After evacuating the inside of the vacuum container l to 1.0×10T5 Torr, a mixed gas of rimethanol and argon is introduced through the gas introduction lower. Methanol gas and argon gas are controlled by flow meters 8a and 8b to have desired flow rates, respectively. Further, the pressure inside the vacuum container 1 is maintained at a predetermined constant pressure by a vacuum exhaust system 9. High frequency power supply 6
is operated, and a predetermined AC voltage is applied to the cathode 2 through the matching circuit 5. Plasma is generated between the electrodes by applying an alternating voltage, and the CaS thin film is etched. When the etching amount of the CaS thin film reaches the desired value,
The operation of the high frequency TIE source 6 is stopped and etching is completed.

C113 activated by the plasma combines with Ca formed on the substrate to form a compound Ca(CH3)2 with Ca. Since Ca(C113)2 has a high vapor pressure, it easily evaporates from the substrate, and as a result, etching of the CaS thin film progresses.

In this case, red light emission was obtained, and when voltage was applied to all electrodes, light emission of a mixed color of both colors was obtained. Furthermore, the luminous efficiency of each phosphor film was the same as that obtained when an EL element was formed using each phosphor thin film alone.
