Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the orientational property of a uniform monodomain state, a high contrast ratio at the time of driving and good bistability by using a specific perylene as a component to form oriented layers. CONSTITUTION:This element has electrodes 13, 23 and the oriented layers 15, 25 for orienting a liquid crystal layer 33 respectively on the inner side of a pair of substrates 11, 21 facing each other. The perylene expressed by formula I is used as the component to form the oriented layers 15, 25. In formula I, R denotes hydrogen, lower alkyl group or substd. or unsubstd. arom. hydrocarbon ring. The liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal element formed in such a manner can be uniaxially oriented by a uniaxial orientation treatment such as rubbing treatment or diagonal vapor deposition treatment. The liquid crystal element with which the orientation of the uniform monodomain state with decreased defects is obtainable and which exhibits the stable bistability and the high contrast ratio at the time of driving is thereby obtd.

Liquid crystal display elements using ferroelectric liquid crystals, liquid crystal shutters,
In liquid crystal elements such as liquid crystal light valves, switching elements for optical information processing, and optical memories, it is necessary to preferentially align liquid crystal in one direction. Since this alignment treatment has a great influence on the quality of these liquid crystal elements, much research has been conducted on it.

Conventional methods for aligning liquid crystals include oblique vapor deposition of inorganic materials, rubbing of silane coupling agent coatings, and rubbing of organic polymer coatings, but none of these methods are satisfactory. Oblique deposition of inorganic materials is a batch process, which takes time.
The productivity is poor, and the method of rubbing a silane coupling agent coating has poor reliability.Furthermore, the method of rubbing an organic polymer coating to form an alignment film generally has poor heat resistance. In the case of polyimide, which has good heat resistance and is widely used, it is difficult to obtain homogeneous monodomains, the contrast ratio during driving is low, and furthermore, the bistability is poor and the response is reduced. There is a difficulty in doing so.

(In the formula, R represents hydrogen, a lower alkyl group, or a substituted aromatic hydrocarbon ring.) Generally, the alignment of liquid crystals is performed by the alignment regulating force of an alignment film, but this alignment regulating force is strong. If it is too high, the bistability, which is one of the characteristics of ferroelectric liquid crystals, will be inhibited, leading to a decrease in responsiveness.

The present inventors have demonstrated that even if a ferroelectric liquid crystal is used as the liquid crystal, it is possible to obtain a uniform monodomain state alignment with few defects, exhibit stable bistability, and increase the contrast ratio during driving. As a result of research into liquid crystal devices, it was discovered that a liquid crystal device using a perylene compound represented by the general formula (1) as an alignment film satisfies the above object, and the present invention was completed.
