The
When recognizing the driving lane, the
In principle, the action

(Vehicle movement on a specific road (1))
FIG. 5 is a diagram for explaining an example of the operation of a vehicle M on a specific road. In the road shown in FIG. 5, the roadway and the sidewalk are divided by a dividing line L. The width D of the roadway is about twice the width of the vehicle M. The width D of the roadway is a width that allows the vehicle M traveling in the plus X direction and an oncoming vehicle traveling in the minus X direction to pass each other at a low speed. The width D is an example of a "predetermined width". In this embodiment, the vehicle M travels on the left side of the roadway, and the oncoming vehicle travels on the right side of the roadway. The left side of the roadway is the minus Y direction side (first side) of the roadway, and the right side of the roadway is the plus Y direction side (second side) of the roadway. When the vehicle M travels on the second side and the oncoming vehicle travels on the first side, the following processing is performed with the first side and the second side read as interchangeable.
In front of vehicle M, on the first side, a road symbol S, a stop line SL, and a crosswalk W are marked in that order. The sidewalk is provided on the first side. Pedestrian PD1 is on the sidewalk on the negative Y side of road symbol S, and pedestrian PD1 is walking in the positive X direction. Pedestrian PD2 is on the sidewalk on the negative Y side of crosswalk W, and pedestrian PD2 is about to cross crosswalk W.

In this way, when there is no oncoming vehicle, vehicle M travels near the center of the road, and when approaching the stop line, vehicle M travels in the center of road symbol S and stops on the first side, thereby preventing oncoming vehicles from obstructing their travel even if the oncoming vehicle wants to approach after stopping. Furthermore, even if a pedestrian unexpectedly approaches the roadway side, vehicle M can maintain an appropriate distance from the pedestrian. As a result, control that is suitable for the traffic environment is realized.

In other words, the width of the roadway (first lane) on the first side of the center line CL is narrower than the width of the roadway (second lane) on the second side of the center line CL.
