Description
チタンサファイア結晶10は、チタン(Ti)がドープされたサファイア(Al2O3)からなる結晶である。チタンサファイア結晶10は、2つの凹面鏡11A、Bの間に配置されている。また、チタンサファイア結晶10は、入射端面がブリュースターカットされた斜方体状であり、光軸に対してブリュースター角となるように配置されている。チタンサファイア結晶10はレーザー媒質であり、励起光源15からの励起光が入射してレーザー発振する。
2つの凹面鏡11A、Bは、一方の面が凹面、他方の面が平面であり、その凹面を向かい合わせにチタンサファイア結晶10を挟むように配置されている。また、凹面鏡11A、Bは、Z字型の共振器構造における屈曲点の位置に配置され、光軸が凹面鏡11A、Bの凹面による反射によりZ字を描くように角度が調整されている。また、凹面鏡11A、B間の距離および凹面の曲率は、凹面鏡11A、Bの中間においてビーム径が最もしぼられるように設定されている。
回折格子12は、Z字型の共振器構造における終端位置に配置されている。また、回折格子12は、回転ステージ20上に載せられ、固定されている。そして、回転ステージ20によって回折格子12は回転可能となっており、その回転によって光軸に対する回折格子12の角度を制御することが可能となっている。回転によって回折格子12へのレーザー光の入射角を変更することで、波長分散により波長選択が可能となっている。より具体的には、回折格子12は透過型であり、回折格子12を透過する1次回折光を、ミラー(図示しない)によって反射させて回折格子12に再び入射させることで、波長分散による波長選択の可能な共振器を構成している。なお、回折格子12には透過型ではなく反射型を用いてもよい。
出力鏡13は、Z字型の共振器における終端位置に配置され、レーザーの基本波(800nm付近の波長帯域)については全反射し、非線形光学結晶14により発生する第2高調波(400nm近傍の波長帯域)については一部を透過して残りは反射するダイクロイックミラーである。出力鏡13を透過した第2高調波がレーザー出力となる。出力鏡13の反射特性は、たとえば、710〜940nmの基本波の波長については反射率99.9%、360〜420nmの第2高調波の波長については反射率3%のものを用いる。
非線形光学結晶14は、共振器内であって、出力鏡13と凹面鏡11Aの間に配置されている。非線形光学結晶14は、バリウムボートレート(BBO)からなる結晶である。また、非線形光学結晶14は、結晶軸が位相整合角となるようにカットされた直方体状である。非線形光学結晶14には、凹面鏡11Aによって反射された基本波のレーザー光が入射する。非線形光学結晶14に入射した基本波の一部は、基本波の2倍の周波数の光(第2高調波)に変換され、出力される。そして第2高調波の大部分は出力鏡13を透過して実施例1のレーザー装置の出力として取り出される。
励起光源15はNd:YAGレーザーであり、波長532nm、繰り返し周波数10kHz、出力16Wの第2高調波を励起光として利用する。励起光は、2枚のミラー25、26による反射によって光軸が所定方向となるようにされた後、レンズ27によって集光され、凹面鏡11Aの凹面側とは反対側の平面に照射され、凹面鏡11Aを透過して共振器内へと入射される。励起光は、凹面鏡11A、Bの中間位置においてビーム径が最も絞られるように集光する。
プリズム17は、複数のプリズムを組み合わせたアナモルフィックプリズムであり、凹面鏡11Bと回折格子12の間に配置されている。このプリズム17によって、凹面鏡11Bによって反射されたチタンサファイア結晶10からの光はビーム径が拡大され、逆に回折格子12からの光はビーム径が縮小される。このようにビーム径を拡大することで、回折格子12による波長分散を大きくし、回折格子12による波長選択を容易にするとともに、絞り16によるビーム透過の制御を容易としている。
絞り16は、共振器内であって、プリズム17と回折格子12の間に配置されている。絞り16は、虹彩絞り(アイリス)であり、複数枚の羽根の重なり具合によって、中心を変化させずに円形の開口の直径を制御することができ、共振器内の光のビームの通過領域を制限(横モードを制限)することができる。
高効率なイオン化のために、実施例1のレーザー装置の出力するレーザー光の特性は、以下の範囲とすることが望ましい。繰り返し周波数は1〜30kHz、パルス幅は20〜100nsであることが望ましい。また、広帯域モードにおいては、波長可変範囲は700〜920nmであることが望ましい。また、ピーク出力は0.001〜0.5mJ/pulseであることが望ましい。また、高出力モードにおいては、波長可変範囲は750〜830nmであることが望ましく、ゲインピークの800nm近傍において、広帯域モードの出力の1.2倍以上の出力であることが望ましい。
凹面鏡11からチタンサファイア結晶10までの光軸方向の距離を変化させたときに、レーザーの波長可変領域および出力がどのように変化するかを調べた。なお、実施例1のレーザー装置から非線形光学結晶14を省き、レーザー光の基本波について測定を行った。その結果、図2のグラフの結果を得た。図2において、横軸はピーク波長、縦軸は出力を示している。また、図2(a)は励起光の繰り返し周波数が1kHzの場合であり、図2(b)は繰り返し周波数が10kzの場合である。また、凹面鏡11Aからチタンサファイア結晶10までの距離は、30〜60mmの範囲で5mm刻みで変化させた。凹面鏡11Aからチタンサファイア結晶10までの距離が45mmのとき、2つの凹面鏡11の中央位置となる。
次に、モード切り換えによって発振タイミングがどのように変化するかを調べた。図3は、横軸はレーザー光の基本波のピーク波長、縦軸は発振タイミングを示している。発振タイミングは、励起光を共振器内に入射してからレーザー発振するまでの時間である。図3(a)は繰り返し周波数が1kHzの場合であり、図3(b)は繰り返し周波数が10kzの場合である。
図4は、レーザー光の基本波の波長と出力の関係、および第2高調波の波長と出力の関係を示したグラフである。チタンサファイア結晶10は凹面鏡11A、Bの中央として広帯域モードとした。図4のように、基本波については、710nmから940nm、第2高調波については、360nmから420nmまで連続的に変化させることができ、広い波長可変範囲を実現できていることが確認できた。
チタンサファイア結晶10を凹面鏡11A、Bの中央として広帯域モードとし、実施例1のレーザー装置から出力される第2高調波のレーザー光をミラーにより反射させた後、レンズにより集光してスクリーンに投影した。レーザー装置からミラーを経由してスクリーンまでのレーザー光の飛行距離は4m、ミラーからスクリーンまでの距離は58cmとした。また、スクリーンには0.5mm間隔の格子状の目盛りが記されている。第2高調波の波長を360nmから420nmまで波長掃引速度30nm/分で変化させ、スクリーンをカメラにより撮影し、スクリーンに投影されたビーム位置の時間的変動を観察した。その結果、スクリーン上のレーザー光のビーム径はおよそ0.3mmであり、ビーム位置の変動は0.5mm以下であることがわかった。このことから、共振器内に非線形光学結晶14を配置することで、第2高調波の波長を変化させたときのビーム位置の変動を抑制できることがわかった。
非線形光学結晶14の回転角を制御する較正関数を替えて、第2高調波の出力にどの程度ばらつきが生じるか検討した。図5は、第2高調波の波長と出力の関係を示したグラフである。チタンサファイア結晶10の位置は、凹面鏡11Aから35cmの位置として、高出力モードとした。較正関数は、二次関数、三次関数、四次関数でそれぞれ近似した近似曲線を用いた。また他に、波長領域を波長2nmで分割してそれぞれを二次関数で近似した曲線を用いた(図5中のSeparateの表記)。
絞り16の開口によりレーザーの波長の半値幅(スペクトル線幅)が制御可能であることを示すため、絞り16をオープンにした状態と、クローズにした状態とで、レーザー光の基本波の波長とスペクトル線幅の関係を調べた。また、チタンサファイア結晶10は、凹面鏡11A、Bの中間位置とした。絞り16をオープンにした状態は、開口の直径が10mmであり、クローズにした状態は、開口の直径が1mmである。
実施例1のレーザー装置において、チタンサファイア結晶10の位置を凹面鏡11A、B間の中間位置として広帯域モードとし、原子源から照射されたTh(トリウム)に実施例1のレーザー装置からのレーザー光を照射し、イオン化されたTh+をTOF質量計によって計測した。レーザー光の波長は370nmから430nmまで掃引した。なお、Thのイオン化ポテンシャルは50867cm−1であり、1波長での共鳴励起を経由したイオン化である。

Claims (9)
- 波長可変なレーザー共鳴イオン化用のレーザー装置であって、
出力鏡と、回転により波長を選択する回折格子と、を有した共振器と、
前記共振器内に配置されたレーザー媒質であるチタンドープのサファイア結晶と、
前記サファイア結晶に励起光を入射させる励起光源と、
を有し、
前記サファイア結晶をレーザー光の光軸方向に移動可能とした、
ことを特徴とするレーザー装置。 - 前記共振器内に、レーザー光の基本波から高調波を生成する非線形光学結晶をさらに有し、
前記非線形光学結晶は回転可能であり、高調波の波長の変化に対してビームの位置が一定となるように、前記非線形光学結晶の回転角が制御されている、
ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載のレーザー装置。 - 前記非線形光学結晶の回転角は、前記高調波の波長と、前記高調波の出力が最大となる前記非線形光学結晶の回転角との対応を示した較正曲線によって制御され、
前記較正曲線は、高調波の出力が最大となる前記非線形光学結晶の回転角の測定データを用いて、三次以上の多項式関数で近似した近似曲線である、
ことを特徴とする請求項2に記載のレーザー装置。 - 前記共振器内に、光の横モードを制限可能な絞りをさらに有する、
ことを特徴とする請求項1ないし請求項3のいずれか1項に記載のレーザー装置。 - 試料にイオンビームを照射し、前記試料から原子を放出させる集束イオンビーム源と、
前記試料から放出された原子にレーザー光を照射してイオン化する請求項1ないし請求項4のいずれか1項に記載のレーザー装置と、
イオン化された原子の質量分析を行う質量計と、
を有することを特徴とする質量分析装置。 - 出力鏡と、回転により波長を選択する回折格子と、を有した共振器と、
前記共振器内に配置されたレーザー媒質であるチタンドープのサファイア結晶と、
前記サファイア結晶に励起光を入射させる励起光源と、
を有した、波長可変なレーザー共鳴イオン化用のレーザー装置の制御方法であって、
前記サファイア結晶をレーザー光の光軸方向に移動可能とし、前記サファイア結晶の位置を変更することによって、ゲインピークにおいて高出力な高出力モードと、前記高出力モードよりも波長可変範囲が広い広帯域モードとを選択する、
ことを特徴とするレーザー装置の制御方法。 - 前記共振器内に、レーザー光の基本波から高調波を生成する非線形光学結晶をさらに有し、
前記非線形光学結晶を回転可能とし、
非線形光学結晶の回転角を、高調波の波長の変化に対してビームの位置が一定となるように制御する、
ことを特徴とする請求項6に記載のレーザー装置の制御方法。 - 前記非線形光学結晶の回転角を、前記高調波の波長と、前記高調波の出力が最大となる前記非線形光学結晶の回転角との対応を示した較正曲線によって制御し、
前記較正曲線は、前記高調波の出力が最大となる前記非線形光学結晶の回転角を測定し、その測定データを用いて、三次以上の多項式関数で近似した近似曲線である、
ことを特徴とする請求項6または請求項7に記載のレーザー装置の制御方法。 - 前記共振器内に、光の横モードを制限可能な絞りをさらに有し、
前記絞りの開口の直径により、レーザー光のスペクトル線幅を制御する、
ことを特徴とする請求項6ないし請求項8のいずれか1項に記載のレーザー装置の制御方法。
