Description
The present invention relates to a vibration element, a vibrator, an electronic device, and an electronic apparatus that vibrate by thickness shear vibration.
The AT-cut quartz crystal whose main vibration vibrates by thickness shear vibration is a cubic curve suitable for miniaturization and high frequency, and has excellent frequency temperature characteristics, so it is used in various fields such as oscillators and electronic devices. Yes. In particular, in recent years, as the processing speed of transmission communication equipment and OA equipment has increased, or the capacity of communication data and processing volume has increased, the AT-cut crystal resonator used as the reference frequency signal source has a higher frequency. There is an increasing demand for conversion. In order to increase the frequency of an AT-cut quartz resonator that is excited by thickness shear vibration, it is common to reduce the thickness of the vibrating portion. Therefore, from one or both sides of the quartz substrate, a concave vibrating portion is provided by dry etching or wet etching from one side or both sides, and a main electrode for excitation and a lead electrode extending in the outer peripheral direction are formed on both sides of the substrate. In this way, high frequency is achieved.
However, when the resonance frequency is 300 MHz or more, the vibration part of the concave portion becomes very thin as 5.6 μm or less, so that the vibration part bends due to its own weight or the weight of the excitation electrode. This means that a static load, i.e., internal strain, remains in the vibration part, and not only thickness shear vibration due to normal energy confinement cannot be obtained, but also reliability such as long-term aging deteriorates. there were. On the other hand, in
However, as disclosed in
Therefore, in a vibration element having a high frequency (particularly a resonance frequency of 200 MHz or more), the relationship between the length and thickness of the vibration part of the vibration element is optimized to prevent generation of unnecessary spurious that affects the main vibration. A small vibration element is provided.
SUMMARY An advantage of some aspects of the invention is to solve at least a part of the problems described above, and the invention can be implemented as the following forms or application examples.

A general AT-cut quartz crystal resonator element is widely used in a thickness-shear vibration mode as a main vibration, and its resonance frequency is inversely proportional to the thickness of the vibration part. Therefore, the frequency can be increased by reducing the thickness of the vibration part.
However, it is known that spurious due to higher-order overtone waves of unnecessary vibration modes such as thickness bending vibration, longitudinal vibration, and contour slip vibration exist in the vicinity of the resonance frequency of the thickness-shear vibration mode that is the main vibration. ing. These unnecessary vibration modes depend on the contour size of the quartz substrate and may adversely affect the desired resonance frequency obtained by thickness shear vibration. Unnecessary spurious has poor temperature characteristics, so even if it does not pose a problem for the desired resonance frequency at room temperature, it approaches the desired resonance frequency as the temperature changes, and is strongly coupled to the thickness-shear vibration mode. When a singular phenomenon such as a CI dip occurs and an oscillation circuit is configured, an oscillation failure such as non-oscillation may occur due to oscillation frequency drift or increased resistance. Therefore, when designing a vibration element, it is required to design so that these unnecessary spurs are not coupled to the main vibration.
FIG. 3 is a diagram showing the temperature characteristics of the vibrator in which the AT-cut quartz crystal resonator element prototyped in the embodiment of FIG. 1 is mounted on a ceramic package, and FIG. (B) shows the CI temperature characteristics. Here, the resonance frequency of the AT-cut quartz crystal resonator element is 246 MHz, and the dimensions of the vibrating
As shown in FIG. 3, a unique phenomenon occurs in which the thickness-slip vibration mode of the main vibration and the unnecessary vibration mode are combined at a temperature of about 45 ° C., such as frequency discontinuity and a marked increase in CI. This is because the plate thickness ratio (Lx / H) of the dimension Lx in the long side direction (X-axis direction) to the thickness H of the
In addition, the contour slip vibration mode caused by the dimension Lz in the short side direction (Z′-axis direction) has a low resonance frequency of the fundamental wave because the frequency constant that determines the resonance frequency is as small as about half compared to the thickness bending vibration mode. . Therefore, the higher-order overtone wave generated in the vicinity of the resonance frequency of the main vibration has an order that is about twice as large as the thickness bending vibration mode, and the effect is small even if coupled with the thickness-shear vibration mode of the main vibration. Don't be. Therefore, although the plate thickness ratio (Lz / H) of the dimension Lz in the short side direction (Z′-axis direction) to the thickness H of the
FIG. 4 shows the CI value ratio (CImax / CI) of the AT-cut quartz resonator to the plate thickness ratio (Lx / H). An AT-cut quartz resonator with a resonance frequency of 246 MHz with a plate thickness ratio (Lx / H) changed from 40 to 90 was prototyped and mounted on a ceramic package, and the temperature characteristics in the temperature range of -40 ° C to 85 ° C were measured. Based on the CI value at a temperature of 25 ° C., the correlation between the CI value ratio (CImax / CI) and the plate thickness ratio (Lx / H) with the maximum CI value (CImax) was investigated.
The plate thickness ratio (Lz / H) is fixed at 50, and the electrode dimensions and the like are the same as the trial production conditions shown in FIG.
From FIG. 4, when the plate thickness ratio (Lx / H) is less than 50, it is combined with the high-order overtone wave in the thickness bending vibration mode due to the dimension Lx in the long side direction (X-axis direction), so the CI value ratio (CImax / CI) Is significantly larger. From this result, it is necessary to set the plate thickness ratio (Lx / H) to 50 or more in order to avoid unnecessary coupling with spurious.
Next, FIG. 5 shows the CI value ratio (CImax / CI) of the AT-cut quartz resonator to the plate thickness ratio (Lz / H). An AT-cut quartz resonator having a resonance frequency of 246 MHz with the plate thickness ratio (Lz / H) changed from 30 to 80 was made as a prototype, and the CI value ratio (CImax / CI) and the plate thickness ratio (Lx / The correlation with H) was investigated.
The plate thickness ratio (Lx / H) is constant 60, and the electrode dimensions and the like are the same as the prototype conditions shown in FIG.
From FIG. 5, when the plate thickness ratio (Lz / H) is less than 35, it is combined with the high-order overtone wave in the contour sliding vibration mode caused by the dimension Lz in the short side direction (Z′-axis direction), so the CI value ratio (CImax / CI ) Is significantly larger. From this result, it is necessary to set the plate thickness ratio (Lz / H) to 35 or more in order to avoid unnecessary coupling with spurious.
As a result, the plate thickness ratio (Lx / H) of the dimension Lx in the long side direction (X axis direction) is 50 or more, and the plate thickness ratio (Lz / H) of the dimension Lz in the short side direction (Z axis direction) is 35. By doing so, the thickness bending vibration mode caused by the dimension Lx and the contour slip vibration mode caused by the dimension Lz can be avoided at the same time, and the resonance frequency and CI dip due to coupling with the main vibration due to unnecessary spurious can be avoided. It was found that the phenomenon can be suppressed.
As a further miniaturization in the future, assuming that the outer dimensions of a substrate mounted on a ceramic package having an outer dimension of 1.2 mm × 1.0 mm are 0.8 mm × 0.6 mm, the dimensions of the vibrating
Next, a description will be given of the result of measuring the temperature characteristics of an AT-cut quartz crystal resonator mounted on a ceramic package as an AT-cut quartz crystal resonator, which was prototyped in the embodiment of FIG. 1 and vibrates at a resonance frequency in the 246 MHz to 491 MHz band.
FIGS. 6 to 8 show the temperature characteristics of AT-cut quartz resonators having resonance frequencies of 246 MHz, 368 MHz, and 491 MHz. FIGS. 6 (a), 7 (a), and 8 (a) are frequency temperature characteristics. FIGS. 6B, 7B, and 8B show the CI temperature characteristics.
The prototype conditions for each frequency are constant, that is, the substrate thickness ratio (Lx / H) = 70, the plate thickness ratio (Lz / H) = 60, and the base electrode nickel (Ni) film thickness = 7 nm. The gold (Au) film thickness of the electrode is 246 MHz with dimensions of 0.23 mm × 0.18 mm and a film thickness of 120 nm. 368 MHz has dimensions of 0.23 mm × 0.18 mm and a film thickness of 90 nm. 491 MHz has dimensions of 0.18 mm × 0.14 mm and a film thickness of 60 nm.
The AT-cut quartz crystal resonators having resonance frequencies of 246 MHz, 368 MHz, and 491 MHz exhibited characteristics without specific phenomena such as resonance frequency and CI dip in the measurement temperature range of −40 ° C. to 85 ° C. Therefore, it was confirmed that by using the vibration part dimensions of the present embodiment example, an AT-cut quartz crystal resonator that does not generate singular phenomena such as resonance frequency and CI dip can be obtained.
In addition, the upper limit of the frequency which can be manufactured with the current equipment is expected to be about 800 MHz (equivalent to a thickness of 2.1 μm).
