Description
The present invention relates to a fuel cell separator suitably used in a household fuel cell cogeneration system (ENE-FARM), a polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) used in a household fuel cell system, and the like.
A household fuel cell cogeneration system for power saving is a system that generates electricity by taking out hydrogen as fuel from city gas, LP gas, kerosene, etc., and reacting it with oxygen in the air. The waste heat generated during power generation is used for hot water supply. Note that carbon dioxide is not generated because hydrogen is used during power generation, but carbon dioxide is discharged in the process of taking out hydrogen by reforming. As the fuel cell, a polymer electrolyte fuel cell is mainly used.
The household fuel cell cogeneration system includes the following 1. ~ 6. There are advantages like this, and future prospects are expected.
1. Since the exhaust heat generated by power generation can be used directly, the energy use efficiency during power generation is higher than thermal power generation and nuclear power generation that do not use exhaust heat.
2. Since power is generated at home, there is almost no transmission loss.
3. Some gas companies have special price menus that offer discounts on gas prices.
4). Electricity costs are reduced because about 40 to 60% of the electricity used at home can be covered by power generation during hot water supply.
5. Because it is used in combination with an auxiliary heat source machine, there is no worry of running out of hot water.
A conventional household fuel cell cogeneration system is a so-called low temperature type. In other words, the low-temperature household fuel cell cogeneration system operates in a temperature range of about 80 ° C., and further cost reduction and higher system efficiency are required for further spread. ing.
However, since the operating temperature is low in the low temperature type, the cell stack has low carbon monoxide (CO) resistance, and not only requires a large CO converter or CO selective oxidizer, but also an exhaust heat recovery system and The hot water tank also becomes larger. Further, the electrolyte membrane of the low-temperature type polymer electrolyte fuel cell requires humidification, and the humidification system required for this purpose has a complicated configuration, and the cost reduction of the system that occupies most of the cost still remains a major issue.
Therefore, an intermediate temperature type that can compensate for the weak point of the low temperature type has been proposed. The medium temperature household fuel cell cogeneration system has a higher operating temperature than the low temperature type, and thus has high CO resistance and high exhaust heat temperature, so that the exhaust heat recovery system and hot water supply tank are compact. Further, there is no need for humidification of the electrolyte membrane, and there is a high possibility that the cost can be reduced as compared with the low temperature type. In the case of the intermediate temperature type operating in the temperature range of 85 to 200 ° C., steam can be produced by exhaust heat from the fuel cell, and the fuel utilization rate can be increased.
The fuel cell cogeneration system for home use as described above has the following background regarding the fuel cell separator used in the polymer electrolyte fuel cell.
In general, a fuel cell separator means that a MEA (membrane / electrode assembly) is appropriately held in a fuel cell (a unit body in which an MEA is sandwiched between fuel cell separators) and fuel required for the electrochemical reaction ( Hydrogen) and air (oxygen) are supplied, and the electrons obtained by the electrochemical reaction for functioning as a fuel cell are collected without loss. In order to play these roles, the fuel cell separator has "gas permeation" indicating difficulty in passing gas, "bending strength" indicating mechanical strength, "contact resistance" indicating conductivity, and " Each characteristic of “formability” is required.
Conventionally, as a material for a fuel cell separator for a polymer electrolyte fuel cell, a compound of a thermosetting resin such as phenol resin and epoxy resin and graphite has been used as a molding material in recent years due to cost problems. A means for forming a fuel cell separator by compression molding has been adopted. As described above, examples of forming a fuel cell separator with a mixed material (bond carbon) of a thermosetting resin and graphite include those disclosed in
However, when the above conventional fuel cell separator used in a low-temperature solid polymer fuel cell is incorporated in a medium temperature solid polymer fuel cell that is more efficient, gas permeation is required. It has been found that the performance cannot be satisfied. When the cause was examined, it is considered that the thermosetting resin is likely to pass gas because the molecular movement is activated and the interval changes widely at an intermediate temperature defined at 85 to 200 ° C.
The object of the present invention has been improved so as to exhibit good gas permeability even at an intermediate temperature which is higher than the conventional temperature while using a material comprising a thermosetting resin and graphite, and an intermediate temperature solid polymer type The object is to provide a fuel cell separator that can be suitably applied to a fuel cell.
The invention according to
The invention according to
As described above, in the thermosetting resin, since the molecular movement is activated at a medium temperature of 85 to 200 ° C. and the interval changes widely, the gas easily passes. According to the invention of
In other words, by adding soft expanded graphite in the range of 15 to 65% by weight, the directionality comes out while soft expanded graphite enters and clings between the hard graphite during pressure heating molding. The permeation path is complicated and long, and gas becomes difficult to pass as compared with the conventional case. And, by setting the weight% of graphite to 15 to 70% and the weight% of thermosetting resin to 7 to 15% , any of gas permeability, bending strength, contact resistance, and moldability is more It can be improved.
As a result, while using a material consisting of a thermosetting resin and graphite, it has been improved so that it can exhibit good gas permeability even at medium temperature, which is higher than the conventional one. A fuel cell separator that can be suitably applied to a fuel cell can be provided. Further, the thermosetting resin can be selected from phenol resin, epoxy resin, unsaturated polyester resin, and polyimide.
Embodiments of a fuel cell separator (hereinafter simply referred to as “separator”) according to the present invention will be described below with reference to the drawings.
First, the configuration and operation of a separator and a polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) including the separator will be briefly described with reference to FIGS. In the polymer electrolyte fuel cell E, a plurality of
The
As shown in FIG. 2, the
Each
In the polymer electrolyte fuel cell E having the above-described configuration, hydrogen gas supplied from a hydrogen gas supply device provided outside is supplied to the hydrogen
At the same time, oxygen gas (air) supplied from an oxygen gas supply device provided outside is supplied to the oxygen
Along with the above-described electrochemical reaction, the electrochemical reaction of the solid polymer fuel cell E as a whole proceeds, and the chemical energy of the fuel is directly converted into electrical energy, whereby predetermined battery performance is exhibited. Since this polymer electrolyte fuel cell E is operated in a temperature range clearly higher than room temperature due to the properties of the
The “temperature range clearly higher than normal temperature” is conventionally about 80 ° C. (low temperature), but in the present invention, it is set to a range of 85 to 200 ° C. (medium temperature).

The
a. It is composed of graphite powder in which two or more types of graphite B and C are mixed.
b. At least one of the two or more types of graphite powder is expanded graphite B powder.
c. The graphite powder is configured to be coated with resin J.
d. The graphite powder is composed of expanded graphite B powder and natural graphite N (C) powder.
e. The weight percent of the expanded graphite B is set to 15 to 65 weight percent.
f. The weight percent of the natural graphite N is set to 15 to 70 weight percent.
g. The weight% of the resin J is set to 7 to 15 weight% .
h. The resin J is composed of at least one of thermosetting resins (phenol resin, epoxy resin, unsaturated polyester).
Further, the particle size d1 (unit: μm) of the expanded graphite B which is graphite (1) is preferably 20 to 200 μm (20 μm ≦ d1 ≦ 200), and natural graphite N or artificial graphite which is graphite (2). The particle diameter d2 (unit: μm) of M is preferably 20 to 200 μm (20 μm ≦ d2 ≦ 200).
The
When a carbon separator containing a thermosetting resin such as a phenol resin is pressure-heat-molded, water generated during the resin curing is heated to generate steam, which causes a problem of swelling on the surface. In order to prevent this, the material at the time of molding needs to be in a state where gas easily permeates (the value of gas permeation is large). On the other hand, there is a conflicting characteristic that a state in which gas is difficult to permeate after molding (a gas permeation value is small) is desirable. Therefore, the proportion of the expanded graphite that bypasses the gas passage is determined by the upper and lower limits of gas permeation. That is, the lower limit (15% by weight) is determined from the viewpoint of easy escape of steam during molding, and the upper limit (65% by weight) is determined from the difficulty of escape of gas during product. Further, the presence of expanded graphite improves the bending strength in the above-described high temperature region.
The reason why gas permeation is improved by setting the weight percent of expanded graphite to 15 to 65 weight percent is considered as follows. In other words, by adding a predetermined proportion of expanded graphite, the direction of the expanded expanded graphite becomes complicated while entering and clinging between the hard expanded graphite during pressurization and heating. Because it becomes longer. Thereby, the value of gas permeation falls within a predetermined range.

[Comparative Example 10]
As shown in the table of FIG. 5, the
About the point by which the separator by Comparative Examples 1-10 does not comprise the requirements of this invention, it is as follows. In Comparative Examples 1 to 3, the graphite is a single type, and in Comparative Example 4, the expanded graphite is not included. In Comparative Example 5, the weight% of the thermosetting resin is less than 7%, and in Comparative Example 6, the weight% of the thermosetting resin is more than 30%. In Comparative Example 7, the weight percentage of expanded graphite is less than 15%, and in Comparative Example 8, the weight percentage of expanded graphite exceeds 65%. In Comparative Example 9, the weight percentage of natural graphite is less than 15, and in Comparative Example 10, the weight percentage of natural graphite exceeds 70%.
In Comparative Examples 1 and 3, the gas permeation and flexural strength failed to meet the target values and failed, but this was due to the absence of expanded graphite, filling the gaps in graphite (natural graphite, artificial graphite). This is probably because the reinforcing effect cannot be expected. The occurrence of blistering at the time of molding in Comparative Example 2 is considered to result from the fact that graphite is only relatively soft expanded graphite. The problem at the intermediate temperature (200 ° C. gas permeation, 200 ° C. bending strength) in Comparative Example 4 is considered to be a lack of reinforcing effect due to the absence of expanded graphite.
It is considered that the separator of Comparative Example 5 has a low weight% of the thermosetting resin, so that all the basic performances are not obtained. In Comparative Example 6, the weight% of the thermosetting resin is excessive. Therefore, it is considered that the contact resistance becomes high. In Comparative Example 7, the weight percent of expanded graphite is too small, and the gas permeation and bending strength are unacceptable as in Comparative Examples 1 and 3. In Comparative Example 8, the excess of expanded graphite and the graphite Due to the excess, the moldability is rejected as in the case of Comparative Example 2.
