Description
The present invention relates to a lithium secondary battery and a method for manufacturing the same. In detail, it is related with the positive electrode of this secondary battery.
In recent years, secondary batteries such as lithium secondary batteries and nickel metal hydride batteries have become increasingly important as power sources mounted on vehicles using electricity as a drive source, or power sources mounted on personal computers, portable terminals, and other electrical products. . In particular, a lithium secondary battery (typically a lithium ion battery) that is lightweight and obtains a high energy density is expected to be preferably used as a high-output power source mounted on a vehicle.
In a typical configuration of this type of lithium secondary battery, an electrode mixture layer (specifically, a positive electrode mixture layer and a negative electrode mixture layer) capable of reversibly occluding and releasing lithium ions corresponds. A positive electrode and a negative electrode formed on the surface of the electric body are provided. For example, in the case of a positive electrode of a lithium secondary battery, a paste or slurry-like positive electrode mixture prepared by mixing a positive electrode active material such as a lithium transition metal composite oxide with a conductive material and a binder with an appropriate solvent A positive electrode mixture layer is formed by applying the layer forming composition to the positive electrode current collector.
An aqueous solvent may be used as a solvent to be mixed when preparing such a composition. A paste or slurry-like composition for forming a positive electrode mixture layer (hereinafter referred to as “aqueous paste”) using an aqueous solvent is an organic solvent compared to a composition using an organic solvent (non-aqueous solvent). In addition, since there is little industrial waste associated therewith, and there is no equipment and processing cost for that purpose, there is an advantage that the environmental load is generally reduced.
H2O+LiNiO2 → NiOOH+Li++OH−
By the way, among lithium transition metal composite oxides constituting the positive electrode active material of a lithium secondary battery, nickel-based lithium transition metal composite oxides mainly composed of nickel have a large theoretical lithium ion storage capacity, From the viewpoint of reducing the amount of expensive metal materials such as cobalt-based lithium transition metal composite oxides (for example, LiCoO 2 ), it has been attracting attention as a positive electrode active material that can achieve high output or high capacity. Yes.
In addition, when preparing an aqueous paste using a nickel-based lithium transition metal composite oxide, the following exchange reaction of protons and lithium ions on the surface of the nickel-based lithium transition metal composite oxide:
H 2 O + LiNiO 2 → NiOOH + Li + + OH −
And lithium ions flow out from the surface of the positive electrode active material into the aqueous solvent. As a result of such a reaction, the surface of the positive electrode active material is eroded and the specific surface area of the positive electrode active material is increased, so that a large reaction area related to occlusion and release of lithium ions is secured, and higher output is expected. On the other hand, when the surface of the positive electrode active material is eroded, the amount of the active material is reduced, and the battery capacity may be reduced. Such a phenomenon is peculiar when preparing an aqueous paste using nickel-based lithium transition metal composite oxide. In other manganese-based lithium transition metal composite oxide or cobalt-based lithium transition metal composite oxide, This phenomenon does not occur.
Therefore, as described above, the present invention relates to an aqueous paste for forming a positive electrode mixture layer containing a nickel-based lithium transition metal composite oxide as a positive electrode active material, and manufacturing a lithium secondary battery using the aqueous paste. It was created to solve the conventional problems, and its purpose is to utilize the properties of nickel-based lithium transition metal composite oxides that increase in specific surface area by reacting with aqueous solvents, An object of the present invention is to provide a lithium secondary battery having a positive electrode mixture layer excellent in electron conductivity and having excellent battery characteristics (for example, high rate characteristics or cycle characteristics) as a vehicle-mounted high-output power source, and a method for manufacturing the same. To do.
The inventor has found the correlation between the specific surface area of the positive electrode mixture layer and the specific surface area of the positive electrode active material contained in the layer, and the reaction area of the positive electrode involved in occlusion and release of lithium ions, and has completed the present invention. It was.
That is, in order to achieve the above object, according to the present invention, a positive electrode mixture layer containing a positive electrode active material composed of a lithium transition metal composite oxide containing at least lithium and nickel as constituent metal elements is formed on the surface of the positive electrode current collector. A lithium secondary battery including the formed positive electrode is provided. The lithium secondary battery disclosed herein includes the positive electrode active material layer, the positive electrode active material, at least one binder dissolved or dispersed in an aqueous solvent, and a conductive material, and The BET specific surface area of the positive electrode mixture layer satisfies 1.8 m 2 / g or more, and the BET specific surface area of the positive electrode active material satisfies 0.4 m 2 / g or more and 0.8 m 2 / g or less. It is characterized by.
In the present specification, the “lithium secondary battery” refers to a secondary battery that uses lithium ions as electrolyte ions and is charged and discharged by movement of lithium ions between the positive and negative electrodes. In general, a secondary battery referred to as a lithium ion battery is a typical example included in the lithium secondary battery in this specification.
In the present specification, the “electrode active material” refers to an active material capable of reversibly occluding and releasing (typically inserting and removing) a chemical species that serves as a charge carrier in a secondary battery.
Further, in this specification, “BET specific surface area (m 2 / g)” refers to a value determined by a BET method based on a specific surface area measuring method according to JIS K 1477. In the following description, “specific surface area” means “BET specific surface area”.
The positive electrode mixture layer of the lithium secondary battery according to the present invention includes a positive electrode active material, at least one binder dissolved or dispersed in an aqueous solvent, and a conductive material. The binder is a positive electrode. By attaching to the surfaces of the active material and the conductive material, there is a role of maintaining the electrode plate shape. At this time, if the binder is excessively attached to the surface of the positive electrode active material, the reaction area of the positive electrode active material becomes small, and the binder attached portion becomes a reaction resistance at the time of lithium ion desorption, which is not preferable. Therefore, in order to provide a lithium secondary battery having excellent battery characteristics (for example, high rate characteristics or cycle characteristics) as a high-output power source, the specific surface area of the positive electrode active material contained in the positive electrode mixture layer is increased, and the reaction area is increased. It is preferable to increase.
On the other hand, since the positive electrode active material (lithium transition metal composite oxide) used in the present invention has low conductivity, the addition of a conductive material is indispensable to ensure the electronic conductivity of the positive electrode mixture layer. However, if the amount of the binder added is too small, the surface of the positive electrode active material is not covered with the conductive material, and sufficient conductivity cannot be obtained. In addition, when the conductive material occupying most of the specific surface area of the positive electrode mixture layer is small, the specific surface area of the positive electrode mixture layer cannot be increased, and as a result, the reaction related to the occlusion and release of lithium ions in the positive electrode active material. A large area cannot be secured.
Therefore, the present invention increases the specific surface area of the positive electrode active material contained in the positive electrode mixture layer by using, as the positive electrode active material, a nickel-based lithium transition metal composite oxide that increases in specific surface area when reacted with an aqueous solvent. It was possible to secure a wide reaction area related to occlusion and release of lithium ions in the positive electrode active material. That is, in the lithium secondary battery according to the present invention, a lithium transition metal composite oxide having at least lithium and nickel as constituent metal elements as a positive electrode active material is mixed with at least one binder that is dissolved or dispersed in an aqueous solvent. Therefore, the positive electrode active material is present in the positive electrode mixture layer in a state where the specific surface area is larger than that of the conventional material. Furthermore, the BET specific surface area of the positive electrode mixture layer satisfies 1.8 m 2 / g or more, and the BET specific surface area of the positive electrode active material satisfies 0.4 m 2 / g or more and 0.8 m 2 / g or less. The reaction resistance at the positive electrode is small, and it is possible to secure a wide reaction area related to occlusion and release of lithium ions. As a result, a battery having excellent battery characteristics (cycle characteristics or high rate characteristics), in particular, a lithium secondary battery having good low-temperature output characteristics under low-temperature charge / discharge can be provided.

In a preferred embodiment of the lithium secondary battery disclosed herein, the positive electrode active material has the following general formula:
Li x Ni 1- y My O 2 (1)
(X and y in the formula (1) are
1 ≦ x ≦ 1.2,
0 ≦ y <0.5 is satisfied, and
M in the formula (1) is a metal element including at least one element selected from the group consisting of Co, Mn and Al. )
A lithium transition metal composite oxide represented by
Among lithium transition metal composite oxides, nickel-based lithium transition metal composite oxides represented by the above formula (1) contain nickel (Ni) as a constituent metal element other than lithium (Li). Further, the contained metal element (M) may include at least one element selected from the group consisting of cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn), and aluminum (Al), or two or more elements. Such nickel-based lithium transition metal composite oxide has a large theoretical lithium ion storage capacity. As a result, a lithium secondary battery that can achieve higher output can be provided.
In another preferred embodiment, when the total amount of the positive electrode active material, the binder, and the conductive material in the positive electrode mixture layer is 100% by mass, the content of the binder in the positive electrode mixture layer is 3% by mass or less.
As described above, when the binder is excessively attached to the surface of the positive electrode active material, the specific surface area of the positive electrode active material is decreased, and the reaction resistance of the positive electrode is increased. However, by setting the content of the binder in the positive electrode mixture layer within the above range, it is possible to obtain a positive electrode active material in a suitable state without the binder covering the surface of the positive electrode active material too much. it can. As a result, it is possible to provide a lithium secondary battery having excellent battery characteristics (for example, high rate characteristics or cycle characteristics) as a high-output power source.
H2O+LiNiO2 → NiOOH+Li++OH−
Moreover, this invention provides the method of manufacturing a lithium secondary battery as another side surface which implement | achieves the said objective. That is, in the method for producing a lithium secondary battery provided by the present invention, a positive electrode mixture layer including a positive electrode active material composed of a lithium transition metal composite oxide containing at least lithium and nickel as constituent metal elements is formed into a positive electrode collector. It is a method of manufacturing a lithium secondary battery including a positive electrode formed on the surface of an electric body. The production method disclosed herein includes: 1) preparing an aqueous paste A by adding a conductive material and at least one binder dissolved or dispersed in an aqueous solvent to the aqueous solvent and kneading; ) The positive electrode active material having a BET specific surface area of 0.4 m 2 / g or more and 0.8 m 2 / g or less and at least one binder dissolved or dispersed in the aqueous solvent are added to the aqueous solvent and kneaded. 3) Prepare the aqueous paste C by mixing the aqueous paste A and the aqueous paste B prepared above, and apply the paste C to the surface of the positive electrode current collector. Forming a material layer. The positive electrode mixture layer is formed so that the BET specific surface area of the positive electrode mixture layer satisfies 1.8 m 2 / g or more.
Conventionally, it is a general method to prepare a paste by simultaneously adding a positive electrode active material and a conductive material, but in the present invention, an aqueous paste A containing a conductive material and an aqueous paste B containing a positive electrode active material are used. After preparing each, the positive mix layer is formed using the aqueous paste C prepared by mixing the aqueous paste A and the aqueous paste B. When the conductive material is mixed simultaneously with the positive electrode active material, consolidation occurs, and the volume and specific surface area decrease. In this case, a large amount of conductive material is required to ensure the specific surface area. On the other hand, in the aqueous paste B, a binder that hardly coats (covers) the positive electrode active material (or has a small increase in reaction resistance even when coated (coated)) can be selected as the binder. By preparing an aqueous paste thus the positive electrode active material and the conductive material in the separate, BET specific surface area in the preparation of aqueous paste B containing the positive electrode active material is 0.4
H 2 O + LiNiO 2 → NiOOH + Li + + OH −
Occurs, the surface of the oxide is eroded and the specific surface area becomes larger than before preparation. Thus, the aqueous paste B containing a positive electrode active material with a large specific surface area can be prepared by mixing only a positive electrode active material with an aqueous solvent and a binder. Thereafter, by mixing the aqueous paste B with the aqueous paste A containing a conductive material, the surface of the positive electrode active material can be coated without aggregating the conductive materials. An aqueous paste C having a large area can be prepared.
Furthermore, by using the aqueous paste C, the positive electrode composite material layer is formed so that the BET specific surface area of the positive electrode composite material layer satisfies 1.8 m 2 / g or more. Manufactures lithium secondary batteries with excellent battery characteristics (cycle characteristics or high-rate characteristics) with a wide reaction area related to occlusion and release of lithium, especially lithium secondary batteries with good low-temperature output characteristics under low-temperature charge and discharge can do.

In another preferred embodiment, when the total amount of the positive electrode active material, the binder, and the conductive material in the positive electrode mixture layer is 100% by mass, the content of the binder in the positive electrode mixture layer is The positive electrode mixture layer is formed so as to be 3% by mass or less.
When the content rate of the binder is high, the binder is excessively attached to the surface of the positive electrode active material, so that the reaction area of the positive electrode active material becomes small and the reaction resistance at the time of lithium ion desorption is increased. However, the positive electrode in a suitable state without excessively covering the surface of the positive electrode active material with the binder by forming the positive electrode mixture layer so that the content of the binder in the positive electrode mixture layer is in the above range. An active material can be obtained. As a result, it is possible to provide a lithium secondary battery having excellent battery characteristics (for example, high rate characteristics or cycle characteristics) as a high-output power source.
In a preferred embodiment, the binder used for the preparation of the aqueous paste A selects a substance having a stronger thickening action than the binder used for the preparation of the aqueous paste B.
When the binder is excessively attached to the surface of the positive electrode active material, the reaction resistance increases, and therefore, as the binder used for preparing the aqueous paste B, the thickening action is smaller than that of the binder used for preparing the aqueous paste A. It is preferable to use a substance. Since the binder having a smaller thickening action is less likely to adhere to the surface of the positive electrode active material, it is possible to ensure a wide reaction area related to occlusion and release of lithium ions. Providing a lithium secondary battery having excellent battery characteristics (for example, high rate characteristics or cycle characteristics) by forming a positive electrode mixture layer using an aqueous paste C prepared by mixing such aqueous pastes A and B can do.
More preferably, the aqueous paste A and the aqueous paste B are prepared such that the viscosity of the aqueous paste A is larger than the viscosity of the aqueous paste B.
When the aqueous paste B containing the positive electrode active material is prepared using a binder having a small thickening action, the positive electrode active material may settle depending on the timing of application to the positive electrode current collector, and the application state may become uneven. is there. Therefore, by preparing the aqueous paste A containing the conductive material so that the viscosity of the aqueous paste A containing the positive electrode active material is higher than that of the aqueous paste B, the aqueous paste A and the aqueous paste B have a suitable viscosity. Paste C can be prepared. As a result, the aqueous paste C can be uniformly applied to the surface of the positive electrode current collector without variation in the application state.

H2O+LiNiO2 → NiOOH+Li++OH−

The composite material layer includes a positive electrode formed on the surface of the positive electrode current collector.
First, each component of the positive electrode of the lithium secondary battery according to the present embodiment will be described. The positive electrode mixture layer of the positive electrode disclosed herein contains a powdery (granular) positive electrode active material capable of occluding and releasing lithium ions serving as charge carriers. Such a positive electrode active material is composed of a lithium transition metal composite oxide having at least lithium and nickel as constituent metal elements, so-called nickel-based lithium transition metal composite oxide. Nickel-based lithium transition metal composite oxides have higher theoretical lithium ion storage capacity and higher energy density than cobalt-based lithium transition metal composite oxides such as lithium cobaltate and manganese-based lithium transition metal composite oxides. Has attracted attention as a thing. Further, the nickel-based lithium transition metal composite oxide is composed of an aqueous solvent (typically water, the lithium secondary battery paste or slurry-like composition for forming a positive electrode mixture layer (aqueous paste) in the present invention). Reaction with the solvent used in the preparation), the exchange reaction of the following protons and lithium ions on the surface of the nickel-based lithium transition metal composite oxide:
H 2 O + LiNiO 2 → NiOOH + Li + + OH −
Occurs, and lithium ions flow out into the aqueous solvent. As a result of such a reaction, the surface of the oxide is eroded and the specific surface area is increased, so that a large reaction area relating to the occlusion and release of lithium ions is secured, and higher output is expected.

A nickel-based lithium transition metal composite oxide represented by the formula can be preferably used.
In addition to the constituent metal elements other than lithium (Li) and nickel (Ni), at least one or more selected from the group consisting of cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn), and aluminum (Al) as the minutely contained metal element May be included.
Here, the lithium transition metal composite oxide represented by the above formula (1) is selected from the group consisting of lithium (Li) and nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn), and aluminum (Al). Examples of such metal elements include chromium (Cr), vanadium (V), magnesium (Mg), titanium (Ti), zirconium (Zr), niobium (Nb), molybdenum (Mo), tungsten (W), copper ( One or more selected from the group consisting of Cu), zinc (Zn), gallium (Ga), indium (In), tin (Sn), lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce) and iron (Fe) possible.
The positive electrode active material disclosed herein has a BET specific surface area of 0.4 m 2 / g or more and 0.8 m 2 / g or less, preferably 0.5 m 2 / g or more and 0.7 m 2 / g or less. A lithium transition metal composite oxide of 0.7 m 2 / g is used. In order to increase the reaction area of the positive electrode active material contained in the positive electrode mixture layer (the ratio of the surface area of the positive electrode active material to which no binder is attached), a positive electrode active material having such a BET specific surface area is used. As a result, it is possible to ensure a wide reaction area of the positive electrode related to the insertion and extraction of lithium ions.
Here, the positive electrode active material comprising a lithium transition metal composite oxide is prepared and provided by, for example, a conventionally known method. For example, the oxide can be obtained by mixing several raw material compounds appropriately selected according to the atomic composition at a predetermined molar ratio and firing through a suitable means through a crystallization step. Therefore, in order to adjust the BET specific surface area of the lithium transition metal composite oxide, the type and concentration of the raw material compound, the stirring speed, the stirring in the production process (typically the crystallization process) of the lithium transition metal composite oxide It can be adjusted by controlling the time, or the firing time or firing temperature of the firing step. In addition, a granular lithium transition metal composite oxide substantially constituted by secondary particles having a desired average particle size and / or particle size distribution by pulverizing, granulating and classifying the fired product by an appropriate means You can also get The BET specific surface area can be easily measured using a commercially available measuring device (for example, a computer-controlled fully automatic BET specific surface area measuring device).
Furthermore, the positive electrode mixture layer contains, in addition to the positive electrode active material, at least one binder or conductive material that is dissolved or dispersed in an aqueous solvent. As such a binder, a polymer which is insoluble in an organic solvent and can be dissolved or dispersed in an aqueous solvent can be selected. For example, polymers dissolved in an aqueous solvent include carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC; typically sodium salt), hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC), methyl cellulose (MC), cellulose acetate phthalate (CAP), Examples thereof include cellulose derivatives such as hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) and hydroxypropylmethylcellulose phthalate (HPMCP), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Of these, cellulose derivatives (for example, CMC) can be particularly preferably used.
Polymers dispersed in the aqueous solvent include polyethylene oxide (PEO), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), tetrafluoroethylene-perfluoroalkyl vinyl ether copolymer (PFA), tetrafluoroethylene-hexafluoropropylene copolymer. Fluorine resin such as coalescence (FEP), ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene copolymer (ETFE), vinyl acetate copolymer, styrene butadiene block copolymer (SBR), acrylic acid modified SBR resin (SBR latex), Arabic Examples thereof include rubbers such as rubber. Such a binder may be used individually by 1 type, and may be used in combination of 2 or more type. In addition to the function as a binder, the polymer material exemplified above may be used for the purpose of exhibiting the function as a thickener or other additive of the above composition.
The aqueous solvent in which the binder is dissolved or dispersed is typically water, but may be any water-based solvent as a whole, that is, water or a mixed solvent mainly composed of water is preferably used. it can. As the solvent other than water constituting the mixed solvent, one or more organic solvents (lower alcohol, lower ketone, etc.) that can be uniformly mixed with water can be appropriately selected and used. For example, it is preferable to use a solvent in which about 80% by mass or more (more preferably about 90% by mass or more, more preferably about 95% by mass or more) of the aqueous solvent is water. A particularly preferred example is a solvent consisting essentially of water.
Moreover, as said electrically conductive material, electroconductive powder materials, such as carbon powder and carbon fiber, are used preferably. As the carbon powder, various carbon blacks such as acetylene black, furnace black, ketjen black, and graphite powder are preferable. In addition, conductive fibers such as carbon fibers and metal fibers, metal powders such as copper and nickel, and organic conductive materials such as polyphenylene derivatives can be contained alone or as a mixture thereof. In addition, only 1 type may be used among these, or 2 or more types may be used together.
Further, the positive electrode mixture layer of the lithium secondary battery according to the present invention includes a positive electrode active material, at least one binder dissolved or dispersed in an aqueous solvent as described above, and a conductive material. The surface of the positive electrode active material is covered with a conductive material via a binder. Here, when the adhesion part of the binder on the surface of the positive electrode active material is too small, the positive electrode mixture layer is easily peeled off and it is difficult to maintain the electrode plate shape. On the other hand, when there are too many adhering portions of the binder, the reaction resistance at the time of lithium ion desorption is increased and the output is lowered. However, the BET specific surface area of the positive electrode mixture layer is 1.8 m 2 / g or more, for example, 1.8 m 2 / g or more and 50 m 2 / g or less, preferably 1.8 m 2 / g or more and 10 m 2 / g or less. The positive electrode active material contained in the positive electrode mixture layer has a large specific surface area (ratio of the surface area of the positive electrode active material to which no binder is attached) and the lithium ion is occluded and released in the positive electrode active material. It is possible to secure a wide reaction area related to.
Further, when the total amount of the positive electrode active material, the binder, and the conductive material in the positive electrode mixture layer is 100% by mass, the content of the binder in the positive electrode mixture layer is 3% by mass or less. More preferably, the positive electrode mixture layer is formed. If the binder is excessively attached to the surface of the positive electrode active material, the reaction area of the positive electrode active material is reduced, and the reaction resistance of the positive electrode is increased. However, when the content rate of the binder in the positive electrode mixture layer is set in the above range, the binder does not adhere to the surface of the positive electrode active material, and a suitable state can be obtained. As a result, it is possible to provide a lithium secondary battery having excellent battery characteristics (for example, high rate characteristics or cycle characteristics) as a high-output power source.
In addition, as a positive electrode electrical power collector used as the said base material of a positive electrode, the electroconductive member which consists of metal with favorable electroconductivity is used preferably. For example, aluminum or an alloy containing aluminum as a main component can be used. The shape of the positive electrode current collector can vary depending on the shape of the lithium secondary battery, and is not particularly limited, and may be various forms such as a rod shape, a plate shape, a sheet shape, a foil shape, and a mesh shape.
Next, a method for producing a positive electrode will be described as an example of a preferred embodiment of the method for producing a lithium secondary battery according to the present invention.
In the production method disclosed herein, a positive electrode mixture layer including a positive electrode active material composed of a lithium transition metal composite oxide containing at least lithium and nickel as constituent metal elements is formed on the surface of the positive electrode current collector A method for producing a lithium secondary battery including a positive electrode.
1) A step of preparing an aqueous paste A by adding a conductive material and at least one binder dissolved or dispersed in an aqueous solvent to the aqueous solvent and kneading, and 2) a BET specific surface area of 0.4 m 2. A step of preparing an aqueous paste B by adding to a water-based solvent and kneading at least one binder active material that is dissolved in / dispersed in a water-based solvent and a positive electrode active material of / g to 0.8 m 2 / g or less, 3) A step of preparing an aqueous paste C by mixing the aqueous paste A and the aqueous paste B prepared above, and applying the paste C to the surface of the positive electrode current collector to form a positive electrode mixture layer. . Hereafter, the manufacturing method of the positive electrode including the said process is demonstrated in detail.
First, an aqueous paste A is prepared by adding a conductive material and at least one binder dissolved or dispersed in an aqueous solvent to the aqueous solvent and kneading them. The conductive material is easily agglomerated and bulky and difficult to disperse. However, by adding at least one binder that dissolves or disperses in the aqueous solvent, the binder adheres to the surface of the conductive material, and the affinity of the conductive material for water is improved. Therefore, the aqueous paste A can be prepared without aggregating the conductive material even when kneaded.
H2O+LiNiO2 → NiOOH+Li++OH−
Next, a positive electrode active material having a BET specific surface area of 0.4 m 2 / g or more and 0.8 m 2 / g or less and at least one binder dissolved or dispersed in an aqueous solvent are added to the aqueous solvent and kneaded. To prepare an aqueous paste B.
As the positive electrode active material of the lithium secondary battery disclosed here, a nickel-based lithium transition metal composite oxide whose specific surface area increases when reacted with an aqueous solvent as described above is used. Therefore, during the preparation of the aqueous paste B, the nickel-based lithium transition metal composite oxide reacts with the aqueous solvent, and the following exchange reaction between protons and lithium ions:
H 2 O + LiNiO 2 → NiOOH + Li + + OH −
Occurs, the surface of the oxide is eroded and the specific surface area becomes larger than the BET specific surface area before preparation. Therefore, the aqueous paste B containing the positive electrode active material having a large reaction area can be prepared by previously mixing only the positive electrode active material with the aqueous solvent and the binder.
In addition, each binder used for preparation of the aqueous paste A and the aqueous paste B is not particularly limited as long as it has a property of being dissolved or dispersed in an aqueous solvent. Of the binders listed above, the same substances may be used, or binders of different substances may be used, but preferably the binder used in the preparation of the aqueous paste A is the above-mentioned one. A substance having a stronger thickening action than the binder used in the preparation of the aqueous paste B is used. This is because, by using a substance having a small thickening action as the binder used in the preparation of the aqueous paste B, the ratio of the binder adhering to the surface of the positive electrode active material is reduced, and the reaction relating to the occlusion and release of lithium ions. This is because a large area can be secured.
In addition, it is preferable to prepare the aqueous paste A and the aqueous paste B so that the viscosity of the aqueous paste A containing the conductive material is larger than the viscosity of the aqueous paste B containing the positive electrode active material. If the aqueous paste A is also prepared using a binder having a thickening effect similar to that of the aqueous paste B, a positive electrode current collector is obtained using the aqueous paste C obtained by mixing the aqueous paste A and the aqueous paste B. If applied to the surface of the body, the positive electrode active material may settle due to insufficient viscosity, and the applied state may become non-uniform. Therefore, the aqueous paste C having a suitable viscosity can be prepared by adjusting the viscosity of the aqueous paste A to be larger than the viscosity of the aqueous paste B. Thereby, the aqueous paste C can be uniformly applied to the surface of the positive electrode current collector without variation in the application state.
In addition, in order to make the viscosity of the aqueous paste A larger than the viscosity of the aqueous paste B, it can be adjusted by increasing or decreasing the addition amount of the aqueous solvent, or using binders having different thickening actions. . For example, CMC may be used as the binder for the aqueous paste B, and PEO having a greater thickening effect than CMC may be used as the binder for the aqueous paste A.
Next, aqueous paste C is prepared by mixing aqueous paste A and aqueous paste B prepared above. Then, the aqueous paste C is applied to the surface of the positive electrode current collector, the solvent is volatilized and dried, and then rolled (pressed). Thereby, the positive electrode of the lithium secondary battery in which the positive electrode mixture layer is formed on the surface of the positive electrode current collector is obtained.
The mixing ratio of each constituent material in the positive electrode mixture layer is not particularly limited. For example, the ratio of the positive electrode active material is preferably about 50% by mass or more (typically 50 to 95% by mass). More preferably, it is 70-95 mass% (for example, 80-95 mass%).
The proportion of the conductive material in the positive electrode mixture layer can be, for example, about 2 to 20% by mass, preferably about 2 to 15% by mass, and more preferably about 5 to 10% by mass.
Furthermore, the ratio of the binder in the positive electrode mixture layer is preferably 3% by mass or less. When the content of the binder is high, the binder is excessively attached to the surface of the positive electrode active material, the reaction area of the positive electrode active material is reduced, and the reaction resistance of the positive electrode is increased. On the other hand, when the amount of the binder added is too small, the positive electrode mixture layer is easily peeled off and the shape of the positive electrode plate cannot be maintained. Therefore, the surface of the positive electrode active material can be formed without excessively reducing the reaction area of the positive electrode active material by forming the positive electrode mixture layer so that the content of the binder in the positive electrode mixture layer is 3% by mass or less. It is possible to ensure a state in which the binder is attached to the surface.
In the lithium secondary battery disclosed herein, the positive electrode mixture layer has a BET specific surface area of 1.8 m 2 / g or more, for example, 1.8 m 2 / g or more and 50 m 2 / g or less, preferably 1.8 m. The positive electrode mixture layer is preferably formed so as to satisfy 2 / g or more and 10 m2 / g or less. As a result, the specific surface area of the positive electrode active material contained in the positive electrode mixture layer (the ratio of the surface area of the positive electrode active material to which no binder is attached) is large, and the reaction area involved in the occlusion and release of lithium ions in the positive electrode active material Can be secured widely. As a result, a lithium secondary battery having excellent battery characteristics (cycle characteristics or high rate characteristics) can be provided. In particular, a lithium secondary battery capable of rapid charge and discharge in a low temperature environment can be provided.
In addition, as a method of apply | coating the said aqueous paste C to a positive electrode electrical power collector, the technique similar to a conventionally well-known method can be employ | adopted suitably. For example, the paste can be suitably applied to the positive electrode current collector by using an appropriate application device such as a slit coater, a die coater, a gravure coater, or a comma coater. Moreover, when drying a solvent, it can dry favorably by using natural drying, a hot air, low-humidity air, a vacuum, infrared rays, far-infrared rays, and an electron beam individually or in combination. Furthermore, as a rolling method, conventionally known rolling methods such as a roll press method and a flat plate press method can be employed. In adjusting the thickness, the thickness may be measured with a film thickness meter, and the press pressure may be adjusted to perform rolling a plurality of times until a desired thickness is obtained.
Next, each component of the negative electrode of the lithium secondary battery disclosed here will be described. Such a negative electrode has a configuration in which a negative electrode mixture layer is formed on the surface of a negative electrode current collector. As the negative electrode current collector serving as the base material of the negative electrode, a conductive member made of a highly conductive metal is preferably used. For example, copper or an alloy containing copper as a main component can be used. The shape of the negative electrode current collector may vary depending on the shape of the lithium secondary battery and the like, and thus is not particularly limited, and may be various forms such as a rod shape, a plate shape, a sheet shape, a foil shape, and a mesh shape. A copper foil having a thickness of about 5 to 100 μm is suitably used as a negative electrode current collector of a lithium secondary battery used as a high-output power source for mounting on a vehicle.
The negative electrode mixture layer formed on the surface of the negative electrode current collector contains a negative electrode active material capable of inserting and extracting lithium ions serving as charge carriers. As the negative electrode active material, one type or two or more types of materials conventionally used in lithium secondary batteries can be used without any particular limitation. An example is carbon particles. A particulate carbon material (carbon particles) containing a graphite structure (layered structure) at least partially is preferably used. Any carbon material of a so-called graphitic material (graphite), non-graphitizable carbon material (hard carbon), easily graphitized carbon material (soft carbon), or a combination of these materials is preferably used. obtain. Among these, graphite particles can be preferably used. Graphite particles (for example, graphite) can suitably occlude lithium ions as charge carriers and are excellent in conductivity. Moreover, since the particle size is small and the surface area per unit volume is large, it can be a negative electrode active material suitable for higher rate charge / discharge.
Moreover, the said negative electrode compound material layer can typically contain arbitrary components, such as a binder, as needed in addition to the said negative electrode active material as the structural component. As such a binder, the same binder as that used for the negative electrode of a general lithium secondary battery can be adopted as appropriate, and functions as the binder listed in the components of the positive electrode described above. The various polymer materials obtained can be suitably used. Alternatively, when a non-aqueous solvent (organic solvent) is used as a solvent during paste preparation, a water-insoluble polymer that is soluble in an organic solvent and insoluble in water may be used as a binder. it can. Examples of this type of polymer include polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC), polyacrylonitrile (PAN), polypropylene oxide (PPO), and polyethylene oxide-propylene oxide copolymer (PEO-PPO). .
Next, a method for manufacturing the negative electrode of the lithium secondary battery will be described. In order to form a negative electrode mixture layer on the surface of the negative electrode current collector, first, the negative electrode active material is mixed with a binder or the like with the appropriate solvent (aqueous solvent or non-aqueous solvent) to form a paste or slurry. The negative electrode composite material layer forming composition (hereinafter referred to as “negative electrode composite material layer forming paste”) is prepared. What was illustrated by the component of the above-mentioned positive electrode can be used suitably for an aqueous solvent. Further, preferred examples of the non-aqueous solvent include N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), methyl ethyl ketone, toluene and the like.
In addition, as for the blending ratio of each constituent material, for example, the ratio of the negative electrode active material in the negative electrode mixture layer is preferably about 50% by mass or more, and about 85 to 99% by mass (for example, 90 to 98% by mass). It is more preferable that Further, the ratio of the binder in the negative electrode composite material layer can be, for example, about 1 to 15% by mass, and is usually preferably about 2 to 10% by mass. The paste thus prepared is applied to the negative electrode current collector, the solvent is evaporated and dried, and then rolling (pressing) is performed. Thereby, the negative electrode of the lithium secondary battery which has the negative electrode compound material layer formed using this paste on a negative electrode collector is obtained. In addition, the application | coating, drying, and a rolling method can use a conventionally well-known means similarly to the manufacturing method of the above-mentioned positive electrode.

Next, the
Further, as shown in FIG. 3, the

The lithium secondary battery according to the present embodiment can be constructed as follows. In the above-described embodiment, the positive electrode (typically positive electrode sheet 30) and the negative electrode (typically negative electrode sheet 40) are stacked and wound together with two
As the non-aqueous electrolyte, the same non-aqueous electrolyte as conventionally used for lithium secondary batteries can be used without any particular limitation. Such a nonaqueous electrolytic solution typically has a composition in which a supporting salt is contained in a suitable nonaqueous solvent. Examples of the non-aqueous solvent include one or two selected from the group consisting of propylene carbonate (PC), ethylene carbonate (EC), diethyl carbonate (DEC), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC), and the like. Lithium compounds (lithium salts) such as LiI can be used. In addition, the density | concentration of the support salt in a nonaqueous electrolyte solution may be the same as that of the nonaqueous electrolyte solution used with the conventional lithium secondary battery, and there is no restriction | limiting in particular. An electrolyte containing an appropriate lithium compound (supporting salt) at a concentration of about 0.1 to 5 mol / L can be used.

In the following test examples, a lithium secondary battery (test battery) disclosed herein was constructed and its performance was evaluated. However, it is not intended to limit the present invention to those shown in the specific examples.

<Construction of lithium secondary battery: Sample I>
When the lithium secondary battery according to Sample I forms the positive electrode mixture layer, the positive electrode active material (LiNi 0.82 Co 0.15 Al 0.03 O 2 ) having a BET specific surface area of 1.2 m 2 / g is 88. Composition of positive electrode of lithium secondary battery according to samples A to O prepared above (type of positive electrode active material, BET specific surface area of positive electrode active material, mass% of conductive material in positive electrode mixture layer, and mass% of binder) ) Is shown in Table 1.
[Measurement of BET specific surface area]
The positive electrode mixture layer was peeled from the positive electrode sheet of the lithium secondary battery according to Samples A to O prepared above, and the BET specific surface area (m 2 / g) of the positive electrode mixture layer was measured. In addition, it measured by the BET method based on the specific surface area measuring method by JISK1477, respectively. Table 1 shows the BET specific surface area (m 2 / g) of the positive electrode mixture layer of the lithium secondary battery according to Samples A to O.
[Evaluation of low-temperature output characteristics]
Next, the output characteristics of the lithium secondary batteries according to the samples A to O under low temperature conditions were examined. That is, after charging at a constant current to 4.1 V under a temperature condition of 25 ° C., the battery capacity was measured by discharging at a constant current to 2.5 V at 5 A. Further, after a 30-minute pause, the battery was charged with a constant current up to 3.73 V with a maximum current of 5 A, and the charging was terminated when the current was attenuated to 100 mA while keeping the voltage constant. Then, each battery was cooled in a -30 degreeC thermostat, discharged to 2.0V with 10W constant power, and each discharge time was measured.
Furthermore, the battery was charged with a constant current to 3.73 V under a temperature condition of 25 ° C., 50 W, 100 W, and 150 W were subjected to constant power discharge in a constant temperature bath of −30 ° C., and the discharge time was measured. From the relationship between the discharge time and the discharge power thus obtained, the discharge power at 2 seconds was estimated and the low temperature output was obtained.
Table 1 shows the results. Moreover, the graph which shows the relationship between the BET specific surface area of a positive electrode compound material layer and a low-temperature output is shown in FIG. The horizontal axis in FIG. 5 represents the BET specific surface area (m 2 / g) of the positive electrode mixture layer, and the vertical axis represents the low temperature output (W).
FIG as 5 shown in, BET specific surface area of the positive-electrode mixture layer is 1.84m 2 /g~2.90m 2 / g lithium secondary battery was in the range of (samples C, D, M, N, In O), an output of 100 W or more was obtained in a low temperature environment, indicating that the low temperature output characteristics were excellent.
Further, as shown in Table 1, the BET specific surface area of the positive electrode active material of the lithium secondary battery (samples C, D, M, N, O) having excellent low-temperature output characteristics is 0.7 m 2 / g or more. Met. Furthermore, among these, lithium secondary batteries using a positive electrode active material (samples M, N, O) having a BET specific surface area of 0.8 m 2 / g tended to obtain even better low-temperature output characteristics. . On the other hand, in the lithium secondary battery (sample H) using the positive electrode active material having a BET specific surface area of 0.3 m 2 / g, it was confirmed that the low-temperature output was significantly reduced. Furthermore, when the BET specific surface area of the positive electrode active material is 1.2 m 2 / g (sample I), it is difficult to prepare an aqueous paste for forming the positive electrode mixture layer with an appropriate viscosity.
In addition, when the sample C and the sample F are compared, the ratio of the combined binder and thickener is 3.5 parts by weight (binder: 2.5 parts by weight, thickener: 1.0 parts by weight). In the lithium secondary battery (sample F) using the positive electrode composite material layer of FIG. Further, it was confirmed that the lithium secondary battery (sample E) using LiCoO 2 as the positive electrode active material has a low low-temperature output.
