Description
The present invention relates to an optical switch that increases an on / off ratio of light in an apparatus that needs to switch light, such as a printer or optical communication, or an optical switch and an optical switch system that can arbitrarily control on / off. .

According to the present invention, in the optical switch, when a defect layer having an effect of confining light is disposed in the spacer portion of the cavity, this portion has a light intensity close to several times that of the incident light. By using a material whose refractive index changes depending on the power of the irradiated light as the defect layer, the refractive index efficiently changes even with a weak incident light intensity. The optical thickness of the defect layer in the cavity determines the transmission wavelength of the transmission spectrum, and the transmission wavelength also changes as the refractive index changes.
Due to the wavelength shift of the transmission spectrum, light is not transmitted and the light enters an off state. If this is used, a nonlinear relationship is generated between the incident light intensity and the emitted light intensity, thereby improving the on-off ratio.
Moreover, by using an electro-optic material for the defect layer, light on / off can be arbitrarily controlled.
By applying a voltage to the plurality of electrodes, the timing at which incident light incident on the electro-optic material is emitted as emitted light or the timing at which it is not emitted as emitted light is synchronized with the on-off timing of incident light. A larger on / off ratio can be obtained.
That is, an optical signal having a small on / off ratio can be converted into a signal having a large on / off ratio.

Cobalt oxide materials that have a very high effect of changing the refractive index depending on the power of irradiated light are known (Material Integration, Vol. 14, No. 12 (2001) p17). By utilizing this, even if the incident intensity is small, the sensitivity of the material whose refractive index changes depending on the power of the irradiated light is large, so that the on / off ratio can be increased.
A material (defect layer) whose refractive index changes depending on the power of irradiated light is used for the spacer portion of the cavity. The

FIG. 3 is a diagram showing a nonlinear relationship between incident light intensity and outgoing light intensity. FIG. 2 shows the optical confinement effect of the
FIG. 4 is a diagram showing the difference between the multicavity and the single cavity with respect to the emitted light intensity and the incident light intensity.
λm>λi、λm>λt、λi=λt
FIG. 5 is a schematic view showing an optical switch having a plurality of defect layers according to the first embodiment of the present invention. The optical thickness of the
By using this, there is a non-linear relationship as shown in FIG. 3 between the incident light intensity and the emitted light intensity, which improves the on / off ratio. The structure shown in FIG. 5 is manufactured in a state where the resonance wavelength of the cavity is slightly shifted from the wavelength of the incident light.
When a single cavity is a multi-cavity, the shape of the transmission spectrum is a top hat (silk hat) with a sharp rise. Further, by using a multicavity, the transmittance of the portion that is turned off when the refractive index changes is low. As a result, the amount of transmitted light at the time of OFF decreases, and the ON / OFF ratio improves. That is, in the multicavity, as shown in FIG. 3, non-linearity in the relationship of incident light intensity / emitted light intensity is increased, and the on / off ratio is also increased.
The light is introduced into the configuration shown in FIG. 5, which will be described later in detail, so that the refractive index of the spacer changes, the wavelength of the incident light coincides with the resonance wavelength of the cavity at a certain intensity, and the emitted light intensity increases. This behavior shows non-linearity and shows the role of the phototransistor to increase switching on / off.
By this manufacturing method, the nonlinear refractive index of this material is −2.7 × 10 −11 ( m 2 / W ), which is a very high value for liquid crystals and organic materials. You this film with a thickness of 358nm.
The optical switch has the following conditions:
λm> λi, λm> λt, λi = λt
Meet.
Here, λi is the full width at half maximum of the wavelength spectrum of the incident light, λm is the maximum movement amount of the resonance wavelength, and λt is the full width at half maximum of the transmission spectrum.
If the incident light intensity at this time is 0.1 GW / m 2 or more, the amount of change in the refractive index exceeds 0.01. As a result, the nonlinear relationship between the incident light intensity and the emitted light intensity as shown in FIG. 3 is shown. By modularizing this, an optical switch is obtained.
FIG. 6 is a characteristic diagram showing the switching operation when the optical switch satisfies the conditions, λm> λi, λm> λt, and λi = λt.
FIG. 7 is a characteristic diagram showing the switching operation when the optical switch does not satisfy the conditions, λm> λi, λm> λt, and λi = λt.
FIG. 8 is a characteristic diagram showing the switching operation in other cases where the optical switch does not satisfy the conditions, λm> λi, λm> λt, and λi = λt.
FIG. 9 is a characteristic diagram showing the effect of changing the refractive index of cobalt oxide depending on the power of irradiated light .
Under the above conditions, it is assumed that λi = λt may be a full width at half maximum of approximately the same level in principle based on the following switching principle.
As shown in FIG. 1, when the
Here, it is considered that the full width at half maximum λt is substantially equal to the wavelength length from the peak of the transmission spectrum to the bottom portion. That is, this λt can indicate the wavelength width from a position where the transmittance in the transmission spectrum is high to a position where the transmittance is low.
This transmission spectrum corresponds to the optical thickness of the
When the above-described conditions are satisfied, the transmission spectrum in the on state and the off state emits light when on, and does not emit light when off, as shown in FIG. As a result, a large extinction ratio can be obtained.
A case where this condition is not satisfied is shown in FIGS. The conditions shown in FIG. 7 are λm <λi and λm> λt. In this case, the peak movement amount λm of the transmittance is small with respect to the spectrum width of the incident light.
Therefore, the spectral peak of transmittance is located at the base of the incident spectrum even at the off time. Therefore, the incident light therethrough is transmitted, and even when it is turned off as shown in FIG. This greatly reduces the extinction ratio.
Further, as shown in FIG. 8, under the conditions of λm <λi, λm> λt, the full width at half maximum of the transmission spectrum is wide and the tail is drawn. Further, since the movement amount λm is small, the transmittance does not become zero at the peak position λip of the incident light even when the light is off. For this reason, incident light is transmitted and light is emitted. This also reduces the extinction ratio.
FIG. 10 is a schematic diagram showing the overall configuration of an optical switch system including a first embodiment of an optical switch according to the present invention. Referring to FIGS. 5 and 10, signal light obtained by weakly modulating a solid-state laser (not shown) is incident from below, and light whose modulation is enhanced by this optical switch is emitted upward as outgoing light.
The amplification of the modulation is performed by an electric signal synchronized with the weak modulation, and the
As shown in an enlarged view in FIG. 5, the switch of the first embodiment is a multi-cavity type, and the defect layers 12 and 12a are made of an electro-optic material and a material whose refractive index changes depending on the power of irradiated light . SiO 2 and TiO 2 were alternately stacked on the
As for the half width, the film thicknesses of SiO 2 and TiO 2 were 70 nm and 45 nm, respectively. The dielectric multilayer film was composed of 6 pairs of SiO 2 and TiO 2 . By controlling the number of pairs, the full width at half maximum of the transmission spectrum can be controlled. If you want a narrower full width at half maximum, you can increase the number of pairs. By using six pairs, the full width at half maximum λt of the transmission spectrum is about 1 nm.
This is a numerical value that is exactly λn / 4 of the wave number λn obtained by dividing the incident wavelength by the refractive index. The
In this embodiment, PLZT is used for the
PLZT has a secondary electro-optic coefficient of 9E -16 [m 2 V -2 ], and its refractive index change is about 0.01 when a voltage of 10 V is applied. With this change in refractive index, the amount of movement λm at the peak position of the transmittance is about 1.5 nm.
This amount of movement λm can also be controlled by the applied voltage or the film thickness integer N of the

FIG. 12 is a schematic view showing a switch unit of the second embodiment of FIG. Referring to FIGS. 11 and 12, incident light passes from left to right.

By controlling the number of pairs, the full width at half maximum of the transmission spectrum can be controlled. If you want a narrower full width at half maximum, you can increase the number of pairs. By using 6 pairs, the full width at half maximum λt of the transmission spectrum is about 1 nm. This is a numerical value that is exactly λn / 4 of the wave number λn obtained by dividing the incident wavelength by the refractive index.
The
As described above, in this embodiment, PLZT is used for the
PLZT is crystallized by spin-coating a gel-like solution and sintering the film. Since the film formed by spin coating has a non-uniform film thickness, the surface property is improved by polishing. Polishing is performed using CMP until the film thickness reaches 300 nm.
A metal layer was disposed on the upper surface of the
PLZT has a secondary electro-optic coefficient of 9E -16 [m 2 V -2 ], and its refractive index change is about 0.01 when a voltage of 10 V is applied. With this change in refractive index, the amount of movement λm at the peak position of the transmittance is about 1.0 nm. This amount of movement λm can also be controlled by the applied voltage or the film thickness integer N of the

By this manufacturing method, the nonlinear refractive index of this material is −2.7 × 10 −11 ( m 2 / W ), which is a very high value for liquid crystals and organic materials. The film thickness was about 300 nm. The incident light intensity is 0.1 GW / m 2 or more, and the refractive index change at this time exceeds 0.01. An AR (non-reflective) coating is applied to the opposite surface of the
Next, the operation of the second embodiment will be described. As incident light, continuous wave (CW) light emitted from a solid-state laser is used. In this embodiment, signal modulation is performed by this switch, and not only amplification. The signal is transmitted as an electrical signal to the electro-optic material, where it is converted to an optical signal, and is enhanced with a material whose refractive index changes with the power of the irradiated light . In the present invention, since it has a multi-cavity structure, a high enhancing action is shown. In the present invention, an arbitrary signal can be added to CW (continuous wave) light.
When reflected light is used as signal light, the signal light is defined by the reflection spectrum. The output light intensity at the time of ON depends on the numerical value at the base of the transmittance of the reflection spectrum. When transmitted light is used as signal light, it depends on the transmittance at the peak position. This is a significant difference when the signal light is changed from transmitted light to reflected light.
The optical switch of the present invention is almost the same as the transmission spectrum of a general bandpass filter, and the transmission spectrum takes a Gaussian type. Since it is a Gaussian type, the amount of transmitted light decreases when the peak position of the spectrum of incident light is shifted even a little. In the reflectance spectrum, the peak value is not 0% reflectance (transmittance is 100%). This is due to an error in film thickness and unevenness on the surface, and it occurs not a little during actual production. In the case of a multi-cavity (having a plurality of defect layers), a top-hat type spectrum can be obtained, but the transmittance cannot be increased by nearly 100%.
That is, as long as the transmitted light is used, it is difficult to achieve a high utilization efficiency close to 100%. On the other hand, it is easy to design the transmittance at the base of the transmission spectrum to be close to 0% by using reflection. That is, it is possible to increase the intensity of emitted light at the time of turning on, and to improve the on-off ratio.
FIG. 13 is a schematic diagram showing the configuration of the third embodiment. FIG. 14 is a schematic view showing a lens directly formed on the substrate of the optical switch. Referring to FIGS. 13 and 14, signal light obtained by weakly modulating a solid-state laser is incident from below, and light whose modulation is enhanced by the present optical switch exits upward as emitted light.
The amplification of the modulation is performed by an electric signal synchronized with the weak modulation, and the
The optical switch is arranged so that light passes through the portion where the beam diameter is minimized. The beam diameter of the collected light is 1/10 or more smaller than the incident light. As the beam diameter becomes smaller, the light density is proportional to the square of the beam diameter, so that the light intensity becomes 100 times or more.
