Description
互いに対向して配置された第1基板と第2基板との間にホモジニアス配向した液晶分子を含む液晶層を保持した液晶表示パネルと、
前記液晶表示パネルの一方の外面に設けられ、第1偏光板、この第1偏光板と前記液晶表示パネルとの間に配置され進相軸及び遅相軸を透過する所定波長の光の間に1/2波長の位相差を与える第1位相差板、及び、この第1位相差板と前記液晶表示パネルとの間に配置され進相軸及び遅相軸を透過する所定波長の光の間に1/4波長の位相差を与えるとともにネマティック液晶分子を法線方向に沿ってハイブリッド配向した状態で固定化させた第2位相差板、を含む第1光学素子と、
前記液晶表示パネルの他方の外面に設けられ、第2偏光板、この第2偏光板と前記液晶表示パネルとの間に配置され進相軸及び遅相軸を透過する所定波長の光の間に1/2波長の位相差を与える第3位相差板、及び、この第3位相差板と前記液晶表示パネルとの間に配置され進相軸及び遅相軸を透過する所定波長の光の間に1/4波長の位相差を与える第4位相差板、を含む第2光学素子と、を備え、
前記第4位相差板は、その面内での互いに直交する方位の屈折率をそれぞれnx及びnyとし、その法線方位の屈折率をnzとしたときに、Nz=(nx−nz)/(nx−ny)で定義されるNz係数が1.5以上2.0以下の範囲に設定され、しかも、
前記第2位相差板における液晶分子の平均傾斜角は、28°より大きい範囲に設定されたことを特徴とする液晶表示装置が提供される。
第1実施形態に係る液晶表示装置においては、図3に示すように、第1光学素子OD1及び第2光学素子OD2は、これらを通過した光の偏光状態を制御する。すなわち、第1光学素子OD1は、液晶層LQに楕円偏光あるいは円偏光の偏光状態を有する光が入射するように自身を通過する光の偏光状態を制御する。したがって、第1光学素子OD1に入射したバックライト光の偏光状態は、第1光学素子OD1を通過した際に所定の状態に変換される。その後、第1光学素子OD1から出射されたバックライト光は、所定の偏光状態を保って液晶層LQに入射する。
第2実施形態に係る液晶表示装置においては、図5に示すように、第1光学素子OD1は、1つの第1偏光板51と、第1偏光板51と液晶表示パネルLPNとの間に配置された第1位相差板RF1と、第1位相差板RF1と液晶表示パネルLPNとの間に配置された第2位相差板RF2と、を含んでいる。この第1光学素子OD1の構成は、第1実施形態と同一であるため、詳細な説明は省略する。
次に、第1実施形態に係る表示モードがノーマリーホワイトモードの液晶表示装置の構成例について説明する。このような構成の液晶表示装置は、例えば、以下のようにして設計される。
次に、第2実施形態に係る表示モードがノーマリーホワイトモードの液晶表示装置の構成例について説明する。このような構成の液晶表示装置は、例えば、以下のようにして設計される。
Claims (2)
- 互いに対向して配置された第1基板と第2基板との間にホモジニアス配向した液晶分子を含む液晶層を保持した液晶表示パネルと、
前記液晶表示パネルの一方の外面に設けられ、第1偏光板、この第1偏光板と前記液晶表示パネルとの間に配置され進相軸及び遅相軸を透過する所定波長の光の間に1/2波長の位相差を与える第1位相差板、及び、この第1位相差板と前記液晶表示パネルとの間に配置され進相軸及び遅相軸を透過する所定波長の光の間に1/4波長の位相差を与えるとともにネマティック液晶分子を法線方向に沿ってハイブリッド配向した状態で固定化させた第2位相差板、を含む第1光学素子と、
前記液晶表示パネルの他方の外面に設けられ、第2偏光板、この第2偏光板と前記液晶表示パネルとの間に配置され進相軸及び遅相軸を透過する所定波長の光の間に1/2波長の位相差を与える第3位相差板、及び、この第3位相差板と前記液晶表示パネルとの間に配置され進相軸及び遅相軸を透過する所定波長の光の間に1/4波長の位相差を与える第4位相差板、を含む第2光学素子と、を備え、
前記第4位相差板は、その面内での互いに直交する方位の屈折率をそれぞれnx及びnyとし、その法線方位の屈折率をnzとしたときに、Nz=(nx−nz)/(nx−ny)で定義されるNz係数が1.5以上2.0以下の範囲に設定され、しかも、
前記第2位相差板における液晶分子の平均傾斜角は、28°より大きい範囲に設定されたことを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 前記第2位相差板の遅相軸及び前記第4位相差板の遅相軸は前記液晶分子のダイレクタと平行な方位に設定され、しかも、前記第4位相差板の遅相軸と前記第2偏光板の吸収軸とのなす角度が75°であることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
