BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an organic electroluminescence device, a driving method thereof, and an electronic device.
[0002]
[Prior art]
An organic electroluminescence display device (organic EL display device) is expected as a next-generation display device. The organic EL display device is configured by arranging a plurality of organic EL elements in which a light emitting layer is sandwiched between upper and lower electrodes in a substrate surface, and performing a desired display by independently driving and controlling each organic EL element. It has become. In this organic EL display device, it is possible to emit light with high luminance in the initial stage of driving, but there is a problem that when continuous light emission is performed, efficiency is gradually lowered and luminance is lowered. Therefore, in order to extend the life of the organic EL element, an organic EL device in which the organic EL element is AC driven (see Patent Document 1) and an organic EL apparatus in which the sine wave is AC driven (see Patent Document 2) are proposed. Has been.
[0003]
Recently, organic EL display devices capable of color display have been developed. In order to perform color display in an organic EL display device, one pixel is usually constituted by three organic EL elements having emission colors corresponding to red, green, and blue, respectively. Since each layer has a different light emission luminance, in order to achieve a white balance of display, a contrivance is made such that the light emission area of each organic EL element is different (see Patent Document 3).

[Problems to be solved by the invention]
According to the techniques described in the above documents, it seems possible to provide a temporary solution for the individual problems. However, in the technique described in
With the technique described in
[0006]
The present invention has been made in view of the above circumstances, and in an organic electroluminescence device provided with a plurality of colors of organic EL elements, the lifetime of the organic EL elements can be increased, and color with time An object of the present invention is to provide an organic electroluminescence device capable of obtaining a good color display while suppressing a change in balance, and a driving method thereof.
[0007]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to solve the above-described problems, an organic electroluminescence device according to the present invention includes a plurality of types of organic EL elements that exhibit different emission colors, and a plurality of pixels that can be driven independently from each other mainly using the organic EL elements. A formed organic electroluminescence device comprising:A power supply device having a constant current source and a constant voltage source, a switching circuit that periodically switches the outputs of the constant current source and the constant voltage source, and supplies the power supplied from the power supply device to the organic EL element Element drive means, and charge injection amount storage means for storing the total charge injection amount of the organic EL element, wherein the power supply device uses the output of the constant current source as the forward bias voltage of the organic EL element, the constant voltage The source output is supplied to the element driving means while periodically switching the output of the source as a reverse bias voltage of the organic EL element, and the element driving means divides one selection period of the pixel into a plurality of periods, and The operation of applying the forward bias voltage to the organic EL element in a period and the operation of applying the reverse bias voltage in the period are alternately performed a plurality of times, and the operation in the period The display gradation of the pixel is controlled by the application time of the bias voltage, the application time of the reverse bias voltage is set to the same application time in the plurality of periods, and the absolute value of the reverse bias voltage is set to the forward bias voltage. The organic EL element having a larger total charge injection amount for each color stored in the charge injection amount storage means is controlled to be larger in a smaller range. It is characterized by that.
In the present invention, in an organic EL element equivalent to a diode in terms of circuit, a voltage applied in a direction in which current flows smoothly (forward direction) is defined as the forward bias voltage, and conversely, a direction in which almost no current flows (reverse direction). The voltage applied to is the reverse bias voltage.
According to this configuration, since the element driving unit applies the forward and reverse bias voltages while periodically switching within the pixel selection period, the operation of releasing the accumulated charge in the light emitting element due to the application of the reverse bias voltage The light emission lifetime of the light emitting element can be extended. As a result, the lifetime difference among a plurality of types of organic EL elements can be reduced, thereby making it difficult to cause a color balance shift due to a decrease in luminance over time of the organic EL elements. Therefore, according to this configuration, it is possible to provide an organic electroluminescence device that can provide high-quality color display over a long period of time.Further, since the reverse bias voltage applied to each organic EL element is adjusted based on the total charge injection amount, the organic EL element can be driven based on the luminance reduction amount (degradation degree) of the organic EL element. A shift in color balance can be effectively prevented, and display burn-in can be effectively prevented by compensating the driving history. In addition, during the period in which the reverse bias voltage is applied, the organic EL element does not emit light, and almost no current flows. Therefore, an excessive reverse bias voltage causes damage to the organic EL element. Therefore, by setting the peak value of the reverse bias voltage to be equal to or less than the maximum peak value of the forward bias voltage, the possibility that the organic EL element is damaged by the reverse bias voltage can be extremely reduced.
[0008]
In the organic electroluminescence device of the present invention, the element driving means applies the forward bias voltage to the organic EL element to drive the corresponding organic EL element at a constant current, while the reverse bias voltage is applied to the organic EL element. It is preferable that the voltage is applied at a predetermined peak value set based on the luminance half-life.
According to this configuration, it is possible to satisfactorily control the light emission luminance of the organic EL element which is a current driving element, and the reverse bias voltage is not constant current driving, thereby causing an excessive reverse bias voltage relative to the organic EL element. Can be prevented from being applied, and the effect of extending the lifetime of the element can be obtained while effectively preventing the organic EL element from being damaged.
[0009]
In the organic electroluminescence device of the present invention, the reverse bias voltage applied to each organic EL element by the element driving unit is a constant peak value set based on the luminance half-life of the organic EL element. You can also
According to this configuration, it is possible to align the lifetime of each organic EL element only by giving the peak value of the reverse bias voltage as an initial value, and to provide an organic electroluminescence device excellent in color balance with an extremely simple configuration. Can do.
[0010]
In the organic electroluminescence device of the present invention, the element driving means is provided corresponding to each organic EL element, and the element driving means has a peak value set based on the luminance half-life of each organic EL element. A reverse bias voltage is preferably applied to the organic EL element.
According to this configuration, it is possible to apply a reverse bias voltage having an appropriately set peak value to a plurality of types of organic EL elements each having a different light emission lifetime, and thus the lifetime difference between the organic EL elements is small. It is possible to provide an organic electroluminescent device that can more effectively prevent a color balance shift with time.
[0011]
The organic electroluminescence device of the present invention further comprises charge injection amount storage means for storing the total charge injection amount of the organic EL element, and the peak value of the reverse bias voltage applied to the organic EL element by the element driving means is A peak value set based on the total charge injection amount for each organic EL element output from the charge injection amount storage means may be used.
According to this configuration, since the reverse bias voltage is set based on the total amount of charge injection, which is a parameter that directly indicates a decrease in luminance (degradation degree) of the organic EL element, an appropriate reverse bias voltage is set according to the drive history. It can be applied to the EL element. Thereby, the color balance shift with time can be effectively prevented, and the luminance difference caused by the drive time difference between the organic EL elements can be compensated, so that display burn-in can be effectively prevented.
[0012]
In the organic electroluminescence device of the present invention, the peak value of the reverse bias voltage applied by the element driving unit may be set higher as the organic EL element having a light emission color having a shorter luminance half-life. . According to this configuration, there is provided an organic electroluminescence device capable of easily aligning the lifetimes of different organic EL elements for each emission color, hardly causing a color balance shift with time, and capable of high-quality color display. be able to.
[0013]
In the organic electroluminescence device of the present invention, the gradation method of the organic EL element may be a current gradation.
Moreover, in the organic electroluminescent apparatus of this invention, the gradation system of the said organic EL element can also be set as the structure which is a time gradation.
In any of the above gradation methods, the organic electroluminescence device according to the present invention can apply a reverse bias voltage in a subframe subsequent to a subframe to which a forward bias voltage is applied. The effect of extending the lifetime of the organic EL element by the bias voltage can be obtained, and the emission lifetimes that differ for each emission color can be leveled, so that high-quality color display with little change in color balance over time is possible. An organic electroluminescence device can be provided.
[0014]
Next, the driving method of the organic electroluminescence device according to the present invention includes a plurality of types of organic EL elements that exhibit different emission colors, and a plurality of pixels that can be driven independently from each other are mainly formed. A method for driving an organic electroluminescence device comprising:One selection period of the pixel is divided into a plurality of periods, and an operation of applying the forward bias voltage to the organic EL element in the divided period and an operation of applying the reverse bias voltage in the period are alternately performed. And performing a plurality of times, controlling the display gradation of the pixel by the application time of the forward bias voltage within the period, and making the application time of the reverse bias voltage the same application time in the plurality of periods, The absolute value of the reverse bias voltage is controlled within a range smaller than the forward bias voltage so that the organic EL element having a larger total charge injection amount for each color stored in the charge injection amount storage means becomes larger. It is characterized by that.
According to this driving method, the life of the organic EL element can be extended by applying the reverse bias voltage to the organic EL element while periodically switching it, thereby reducing the accumulated charge by the reverse bias voltage. Can do.Further, since the reverse bias voltage applied to each organic EL element is adjusted based on the total charge injection amount, the organic EL element can be driven based on the luminance reduction amount (degradation degree) of the organic EL element.
[0015]
Further, in the above driving method, it is preferable that the corresponding organic EL element is driven at a constant current by applying the forward bias voltage, and the reverse bias voltage does not depend on a current flowing through the organic EL element, and It is preferable to set and apply a predetermined peak value based on the luminance half-life. According to this driving method, the light emission luminance of the organic EL element can be satisfactorily controlled, and damage to the element due to application of a reverse bias voltage can be effectively prevented.
[0016]
In the driving method of the organic electroluminescence device of the present invention, the reverse bias voltage having a constant peak value set based on each luminance half-life can be applied to the organic EL elements of the respective emission colors.
According to this driving method, it is possible to align the light emission lifetime of the element to some extent only by giving the reverse bias voltage applied to each light emitting element as an initial value. A shift can be prevented.
[0017]
In the driving method of the organic electroluminescence device of the present invention, a reverse bias voltage having a peak value adjusted according to the total amount of charge injection can be applied to each organic EL element.
According to this driving method, since the reverse bias voltage applied to each organic EL element is adjusted based on the total amount of charge injection, it is possible to drive the organic EL element based on the luminance reduction amount (degradation degree) of the organic EL element. Thus, the color balance shift with time can be effectively prevented, and the display history is effectively prevented by compensating the driving history.
[0018]
In the driving method of the organic electroluminescence device of the present invention, it is preferable that the peak value of the reverse bias voltage is equal to or less than the maximum value of the peak value of the forward bias voltage.
During the period in which the reverse bias voltage is applied, the organic EL element does not emit light and almost no current flows. Therefore, an excessive reverse bias voltage causes damage to the organic EL element. Therefore, by setting the peak value of the reverse bias voltage to be equal to or less than the maximum peak value of the forward bias voltage as in this driving method, the possibility that the organic EL element is damaged by the reverse bias voltage can be extremely reduced.
[0019]
In the driving method of the organic electroluminescence device of the present invention, the gradation method of the organic EL element can be a current gradation.
In the driving method of the organic electroluminescence device of the present invention, the gradation method of the organic EL element can be a time gradation.
Any of the above gradation methods can be suitably used in the driving method according to the present invention. In any of the gradation methods, the reverse bias voltage is organically applied in a subframe subsequent to the subframe to which the forward bias voltage is applied. It can be applied to an EL element, and the light emission lifetime of the element can be extended, and a good color balance can be maintained over a long period by aligning the light emission lifetimes of different elements for each emission color.
[0020]
Next, an electronic apparatus according to the present invention includes the organic electroluminescence device according to the present invention described above. According to this configuration, it is possible to provide an electronic device including a display unit that has a long light emission life and a small life difference between light emitting elements (pixels) of each color and can maintain a good color balance over a long period of time. it can.
