Description
The present invention relates to an organic electroluminescence display panel and a method for manufacturing the same.
2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally, an organic electroluminescence display panel (hereinafter referred to as an organic EL display panel) using an organic light emitting material having electroluminescence characteristics as a light source is known. The organic EL display panel includes an organic electroluminescent element (hereinafter referred to as an organic EL element) in which an organic functional layer having a light emitting function is sandwiched between first and second display electrodes, and the organic EL element A plurality of organic EL elements are arranged in a matrix, for example, on the substrate.
The organic functional layer includes organic material layers such as a hole injection layer, a hole transport layer, a light emitting layer, an electron transport layer, and an electron injection layer. The organic functional layer is made of, for example, a single layer of a light emitting layer made of an organic compound material and having a light emitting function, or a three-layer structure of an organic hole transporting layer, a light emitting layer and an organic electron transporting layer, or an organic hole transporting layer and a light emitting layer. A two-layer structure of layers, and a laminate in which an electron or hole injection layer or a carrier block layer is inserted between these appropriate layers can be obtained.
In the organic EL element having such a configuration, when a voltage is applied between the first and second display electrodes, holes and electrons are injected into the organic functional layer, and these recombine in the light emitting layer to emit light. .
As a method for forming the organic functional layer and the electrode in the organic EL display panel as described above, for example, a mask vapor deposition method is employed. The mask vapor deposition method is a method for forming an organic functional layer and an electrode corresponding to a pattern using a metal mask having a predetermined opening pattern as a shielding portion for a vapor deposition material flow from a vapor deposition source.
When the organic functional layer and the electrode are formed using the mask vapor deposition method, the organic functional layer and the electrode having a pattern corresponding to the opening of the mask can be formed. As shown in FIG. 1, when the organic functional layer 3 and the
Further, when a large-sized and high-definition organic EL display panel is manufactured by using a mask vapor deposition method using a mask having a striped pattern opening or the like, the opening of the metal mask becomes large and the opening Since the width of the mask portion that defines the above becomes narrow, the strength of the mask is insufficient and the mask portion is bent. Although tension is applied to the metal mask to prevent such bending, the mask portion gradually expands and deforms, and the mask portion comes into contact with the organic functional layer on the substrate to form a defective portion in the organic functional layer. End up. When the second display electrode is formed on such an organic functional layer, the second display electrode may contact the first display electrode through the defective portion, thereby causing a short circuit.
As another method for forming the organic functional layer and the electrode, there is known a method in which a partition wall is formed in advance on a substrate and the partition wall is used as a shielding part for a deposition material flow (see Patent Document 1). An example of such a method will be described with reference to FIG. As shown in FIG. 2, after the
However, when the flow of the vapor deposition material forming the organic functional layer cannot reach the base of the partition, the exposed portion of the first display electrode that is not covered by the organic functional layer is formed in the vicinity of the base of the partition. As a result, the second display electrode may come into contact with the first display electrode at the exposed portion and cause a short circuit.
An object of the present invention is to provide a means for solving various problems mentioned above as an example.

The method of manufacturing an organic EL display panel according to
Hereinafter, an organic EL display panel and a manufacturing method thereof according to the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings.
(Example 1)
The organic EL display panel includes a substrate made of glass or resin, and a first display electrode made of a conductive material such as indium tin oxide (hereinafter referred to as ITO) provided on the substrate. The first display electrode may be arranged so as to form a pattern such as a stripe shape.
As shown in FIG. 4A, the first
Note that the thickness of the thick film portion may be non-uniform. For example, as shown in FIG. 4B, the thickness of the thick film portion may be maximized at an intermediate position between the adjacent second display electrodes.
When the first functional layer is made of a low molecular material, the first functional layer may be formed using a dry process such as a vapor deposition method. When the first functional layer is made of a polymer material, the first functional layer may be formed using a wet process such as a spin coating method or a printing method.
A second
The laminated body of the first and second
A
In the organic EL display panel configured as described above, since the organic functional layer is formed thick in the vicinity of the end of the second display electrode, the first display electrode and the second display electrode can be reliably insulated. Therefore, it is possible to prevent a short circuit between the electrodes. Further, even when a mechanical impact such as contact of a metal mask is applied to the thick film portion of the organic functional layer, a defect portion that exposes the first display electrode to the organic functional layer is less likely to occur, and the second display Short circuit between the electrode and the first display electrode is less likely to occur.
Note that the larger the thickness Y1 in the thick film portion of the first functional layer, the more effective the prevention of the occurrence of a short circuit between the first display electrode and the second display electrode. It takes time to form. Therefore, the value of Y1 / Y0 is preferably 2 to 10000, and the value of Y1 / Y0 is more preferably about 2 to 1000.
Moreover, it is not limited when the organic material layer whose film thickness is large in the vicinity of the edge part of a 2nd display electrode is a 1st functional layer on a 1st display electrode among organic functional layers. For example, the film thickness of the second functional layer in the organic functional layer may be large in the vicinity of the end portion of the second display electrode. That is, the thickness of the first functional layer may be uniform, and the thickness of the second functional layer may be large in the vicinity of the end portion of the second display electrode. The organic functional layer is composed of first, second and third functional layers, the first and third functional layers have a uniform thickness, and the second functional layer has a thickness at the end of the second display electrode. It may be large in the vicinity. Further, the organic functional layer is composed of the first, second, and third functional layers, the second functional layer has a uniform thickness, and the first and third functional layers have the thickness at the end of the second display electrode. It may be large in the vicinity. That is, when the organic functional layer is composed of a plurality of organic material layers, the organic material layer having a large thickness in the vicinity of the end portion of the second display electrode is one or more arbitrary layers. Further, the organic material layer having a large film thickness in the vicinity of the end portion of the second display electrode may be made of a polymer material.
In the above embodiment, the second functional layer may be formed by arranging organic material film pieces for each light emitting pixel region. For example, when the organic EL display panel is a full color display panel, an organic material film piece including a light emitting material suitable for the second functional layer to emit each color of red (R), green (G), and blue (B) is used. The first functional layer may be formed as a common layer of RGB three colors by being arranged in the light emitting pixel regions dispersed in a matrix.
(Example 2)
A modification of the organic EL display panel will be described with reference to FIG. As shown in FIG. 5, the organic EL display panel is different from the first embodiment in that thin film pieces made of an organic material constituting an organic functional layer are arranged in a plurality of
According to the organic EL display panel having such a configuration, a defect portion of the first functional layer is generated due to a mechanical impact such as contact of a metal mask used when forming the second thin film piece and the second display electrode. This makes it difficult to cause a short circuit between the first display electrode and the second display electrode.
Further, for example, when the second display electrode is formed by mask vapor deposition, even if the deposition material flow of the second display electrode slightly flows toward the end portion of the first thin film piece, the thick film portion of the first thin film piece Forms a step portion, and further, the vapor deposition material flow hardly adheres to the step portion, so that it becomes difficult for the vapor deposition film to completely cover the step portion. As a result, a short circuit between the first display electrode and the second display electrode hardly occurs.
Note that the width (X) of the first thin film piece and the second display electrode is the pattern accuracy of the first thin film piece and the second display electrode. Set depending on. For example, when the pattern accuracy of the first thin film piece is ± a and the pattern accuracy of the second display electrode is ± b, the maximum between the end of the first thin film piece and the end of the second display electrode The maximum deviation amount is (a + b). In consideration of the maximum value and the time and cost for producing the thick film portion, it is desirable that X is about twice (2 × (a + b)) the positional deviation amount. Specifically, X is preferably about 1 to 100 μm.
Further, an insulating film (not shown) for defining a light emitting pixel region may be disposed on the first display electrode, and a thick film portion of the organic functional layer may be disposed on the insulating film. By combining the organic functional layer having a large film thickness in the vicinity of the end portion of the second display electrode and the insulating film, occurrence of a short circuit between the electrodes can be more reliably suppressed.
(Example 3)
An embodiment in which a partition wall that divides the second display electrodes adjacent to the organic EL display panel is provided will be described. The organic EL display panel is provided with a first display electrode having electrode pieces arranged, for example, in stripes on a substrate. As shown in FIG. 6, a plurality of
A first
On the plurality of first

The organic
In addition, even when the first functional layer is made of a polymer material that is not suitable for vapor deposition, a thick film portion can be formed using a wet process, and an organic EL display panel that prevents occurrence of a short circuit is obtained. It is done.
In the organic functional layer composed of a plurality of organic material layers, the organic material layer having the thick film portion may be one or more arbitrary layers.
The partition is not limited to be formed directly on the first display electrode. For example, the partition may be formed on an insulating film provided on the first display electrode. Except for this point, the other configuration is the same as the configuration shown in FIG. 6 described above. According to such an organic EL display panel, it is possible to more effectively prevent occurrence of a short circuit between the first and second display electrodes at the base portion of the partition wall.
Example 4
Another embodiment of the organic EL display panel will be described with reference to FIG. As shown in FIG. 7, in the organic
According to this configuration, even when the second functional layer and the second display electrode are formed by mask vapor deposition, even if the mask comes into contact with the organic functional layer, it is difficult for a defective portion to be formed in the organic functional layer. As a result, a short circuit between the first display electrode and the second display electrode hardly occurs.
Such a configuration can prevent the occurrence of a short circuit between the electrodes even when the second display electrode is an active matrix organic EL display panel formed by solid deposition, for example. For example, when the active matrix organic EL display panel is a full-color display panel, the light emitting material film pieces corresponding to the three RGB colors are sequentially and repeatedly arranged at intervals. Each of the light emitting material film pieces may be formed by using a mask vapor deposition method. When the light emitting material film piece is formed after forming the first functional layer having the thick film portion at the end portion of the first display electrode as described above, even if the mask contacts the end portion of the first functional layer, Defects that expose the first display electrodes are unlikely to be formed in the first functional layer. Therefore, the possibility that the second display electrode and the first display electrode are short-circuited is reduced.
In addition, although all the above-described embodiments are described as an organic EL display panel in which the organic material layer sandwiched between the electrodes is made of an organic material, an inorganic material may be included in a part of the organic material layer. good.
(Example 5)
A method for manufacturing the organic EL display panel having the structure as described in Example 1 will be described. A conductive material film such as indium tin oxide (hereinafter referred to as ITO) is formed on a
After forming the first
Through the steps as described above, an organic
The method of forming the thick film portion is not limited to the method of forming by increasing / decreasing the supply amount of the material of the organic material layer as described above. For example, as shown in FIG. 9A, after the
As described above, the organic material layer having the thick film portion of the organic functional layer includes the formation of the thin film piece at the position where the end of the second display electrode is to be formed and the formation of the organic thin film in the light emitting pixel region. The film is formed by performing film formation a plurality of times, for example, by carrying out separately. Note that the order of the formation of the thin film pieces and the formation of the organic thin film may be reverse to the above description, and the thin film pieces may be formed after the formation of the organic thin film.
In the description of the above manufacturing method, although the case where the organic material layer having the thick film portion in the organic functional layer is the first functional layer is described, the present invention is not limited to this. It is good also as performing the process of forming the organic material layer whose film thickness is large in arbitrary organic material layers among the organic functional layers which consist of a plurality of organic material layers.
In addition, as described above, the step of forming the organic material layer so as to increase the film thickness includes at least one organic material layer in the vicinity of the end portion of the first display electrode. It is good also as the process of forming thickly compared with the center part. For example, in the vicinity of the end of the first display electrode, the thin film formation may be repeated using a film formation method such as a film formation method or a printing method in which the amount of the solution discharged from the inkjet nozzle is large. By performing this process, the organic EL display panel described above as Example 4 can be manufactured.

A modification of the method for manufacturing the organic EL display panel will be described with reference to FIG. As shown in FIG. 10A, after forming the

A
According to the method for manufacturing an organic EL display panel as described above, even when a mask vapor deposition method is frequently used such as when a full-color display panel is manufactured, a defective portion is hardly generated in the organic functional layer.
Further, even if the vapor deposition material flow exceeds the thick film portion of the thin film piece constituting the organic material layer, the step portion formed by the thick film portion is not easily covered with the vapor deposition film. At this time, even when the mask position is deviated from the specified position and when the mask is deformed, it is difficult for a short circuit to occur.

Another modification of the method for manufacturing the organic EL display panel will be described. After the
A second thin film piece made of an organic material having a light emitting function or the like is formed on the first
A
According to the manufacturing method as described above, the thick film part of the organic functional layer can be formed at the root part of the partition wall by using the wet process and using the capillary action of the solution. The process and apparatus to perform can be simplified.
(Example of manufacturing an organic EL display panel)
The organic EL display panel having the above-described configuration was produced by the following procedure.
(1) Formation of first display electrode (anode) An ITO film having a thickness of 150 nm was formed on a glass substrate by sputtering. Next, a photoresist AZ6112 made by Tokyo Ohka Kogyo Co., Ltd. was disposed on the ITO film, and then a resist pattern having a stripe shape was formed by exposing and developing the resist. A mixed liquid of ferric chloride aqueous solution and hydrochloric acid was used as an etchant for ITO, and the substrate was immersed in the mixed liquid, and the ITO film in a portion not covered with the resist was etched. After the etching treatment, the substrate was immersed in acetone to remove the resist. The obtained ITO film had a stripe pattern with a line width of 120 μm, a gap width of 10 μm (pitch of 130 μm), and 480 lines, and the ITO film was used as a first display electrode.
(2) Formation of barrier ribs After a Zeon-made photoresist ZPN-1100 is disposed as a barrier rib material on the substrate on which the first display electrode as described above is formed, exposure is performed using a photomask having a stripe pattern. It was. Further development was performed to form 121 stripe-shaped partition walls orthogonal to the first display electrodes.
(3) Formation of first functional layer On the substrate on which such partition walls were formed, polyaniline ND-1008 manufactured by Nissan Chemical Industries, Ltd. was spin coated. Subsequently, unnecessary portions of the spin coat film other than the display portion of the display panel were wiped off with acetone. Further, the substrate was heated with a hot plate to evaporate the solvent in the spin coat film, and a polyaniline film having a thickness of about 35 nm was formed on the display portion. The polyaniline liquid entered into the gap between the side wall of the partition wall and the substrate surface by capillary action, and a first functional layer made of a polyaniline film having a larger film thickness than that of the other part was formed in this part.
(4) Formation of second functional layer and second display electrode (cathode) On the first functional layer made of a polyaniline film, α-NPD is 45 nm, and Alq 3 is 60 nm in order using a mask vapor deposition method. A second functional layer was formed by forming a film.
A metal thin film made of an aluminum-lithium (Al—Li) alloy having a thickness of 100 nm was formed on the substrate on which the second functional layer was formed by vapor deposition. Vapor deposition was performed by allowing a vapor deposition material flow of an Al—Li alloy to enter from a direction substantially perpendicular to the main surface of the substrate, and the metal thin film was separated from the top surface of the partition wall. As a result, the metal thin film formed on the second functional layer became the second display electrode, and the second display electrode was formed with a stripe pattern having 120 lines. A second display electrode was formed, and an organic EL element group consisting of a simple matrix of 480 × 120 pixels was formed on the substrate.
(5) Sealing After forming the second display electrode, a glass plate having a recess and a desiccant attached to the recess is bonded to the substrate on which the organic EL element group is provided with a UV curable adhesive. The organic EL element group was sealed. Through the steps as described above, an organic EL display panel capable of various displays with 480 × 120 dots in a single green color was obtained. In such an organic EL display panel, no non-lighted pixels were generated due to a short circuit between the electrodes.
