Description
図3(a)は携帯電話機1の表示部4の表示面を、メイン−LCD14の画像の上下方向が紙面の上下となるように示したものである。なお、以下、表示画面上の左右方向をx方向、上下方向をy方向、表示部4の厚さ方向をz方向と言う。また、図3〜8では、透明電極膜26、27および配向膜24、25が配されたものを省略して図示している。
SW−LCDの液晶分子配向例2を図5を用いて説明する。液晶分子配向例2は、SW−LCD12において、配向膜24・25の代わりに、垂直配向材のポリイミド材料を使用した配向膜を使用したSW−LCD12’を用いることで実現される。これにより、図5(a)のように、電極基板21・22と略垂直となるように液晶分子を配向させられる。
図6(a)は携帯電話機1の表示部4を、表示画面の上下方向が紙面の上下となるように示したものである。
SW−LCDの液晶分子配向例4について、図8を用いて説明する。配向例4は、SW−LCDの配向例3において、配向膜24・25の代わりに、垂直配向材のポリイミド材料を使用した配向膜を使用したSW−LCD12’を用いることで実現される。これにより、基板21・22と略垂直となるように液晶分子を配向させられる。
液晶分子配向例1および3のSW−LCDを用いて、視野角制御時(電圧印加時)での、視線方向による透過率の変化を測定した。結果を図9,図10に示す。
Claims (2)
- 画像を表示するための映像表示手段と、
視認される画像を、単一画像表示モードと複数画像表示モードとに電気的に切り替えるための表示切替手段とを備える表示装置において、
上記表示切替手段は、単一画像表示モードでは、映像表示手段に表示される画像をどの方向からでも視認可能とし、複数画像表示モードでは、正面方向からは映像表示手段に表示される画像を視認可能とし、斜め方向からは映像表示手段に表示される画像に該表示切替手段にて形成されるパターン画像を重ねた画像を視認させるものであると共に、
上記表示切替手段は、第1の領域と第2の領域とに領域分割されており、
単一画像表示モードでは、上記第1の領域および第2の領域ともに、映像表示手段に表示される画像をどの方向からでも視認可能であり、
複数画像表示モードでは、左右方向からの視線に対して上記第1の領域を非透過領域とするパターン画像を映像表示手段にて表示される画像に重ねた画像を視認させるか、あるいは、上下方向からの視線に対して上記第2の領域を非透過領域とするパターン画像を映像表示手段にて表示される画像に重ねた画像を視認させるものであり、
上記表示切替手段は、一対の基板間に配された液晶層であると共に、さらに、上記表示切替手段に一定方向の直線偏光を入射させる第1偏光手段と、上記表示切替手段から出射する光のうち一定方向の直線偏光を取り出す第2偏光手段とを備えており、
上記液晶層の液晶分子を基板と直交する方向から投射した場合の液晶分子の長軸方向と、上記液晶分子に入射する光の直線偏光方向とが、上記第1の領域および第2の領域の一方では常に略平行、他方では略垂直となるように配向分割されており、
上記第2の偏光手段が、上記液晶分子から出射する直線偏光を取り出しており、
単一画像表示モードでは、上記第1の領域および第2の領域ともに、液晶分子の長軸方向が上記基板と略平行または略垂直となるように配向されており、
複数画像表示モードでは、上記第1の領域および第2の領域の少なくとも一方において、液晶分子の長軸方向が基板に対して傾斜するように配向されており、
上記複数画像表示モードにおいては、上記液晶層に電圧を印加するための透明電極膜を上記第1および第2の領域に分割してパターニングすることによって、上記第1の領域および上記第2の領域における視野角制御を独立して行える表示装置。 - 請求項1に記載の表示装置を搭載している電子機器。
