従来の壁面取付けまたは天井吊下げ型の空気調和機は、例えば図３（Ａ）および図３（Ｂ）に示すように、前面側が開放されたベース１と、背面側が開放され、側面視で後方に向けて高くなるように形成された傾斜部４と、同傾斜部４の前後に連続する前部平坦部５および後部平坦部６を備えた上面３と、底面７と、同底面７から上面３に向けて前方に湾曲するように曲面により形成された前面８とからなり、前記傾斜部５および前記後部平坦部６に吸込口９が、前記前面８の下部に吹出口10が夫々形成され、前記ベース１に着脱可能に装着される前面パネル２とにより本体ケースが構成され、同本体ケース内の前記吸込口９と吹出口10を結ぶ空気通路に熱交換器11と、送風ファン12が設けられている。
