TECHNICAL FIELD The present invention relates to a hub assembly, and more particularly, to a hub assembly having a surface that rotates essentially without wobbling and a method of manufacturing the same.
[0002]
Most current products for passenger cars and light trucks have disc brakes as standard equipment on at least the front wheels of such cars. Disc brakes are lighter than drum brakes that are mass-replaced with them, are less expensive to manufacture, are easier to service, and provide more effective braking. However, disc brakes, when improperly manufactured or maintained, can cause unpleasant vibration known as “brake judder”.
[0003]
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION A typical automotive disc brake has a caliper that tightens the disc when the automotive brake is in operation and a disc that rotates with the automotive road wheel. Actually, a plurality of pads are attached to the caliper, which presses the machined surfaces on both sides of the disk, and the brake works by friction between the plurality of pads and the plurality of machined surfaces. The machined surface must be completely flat and must rotate without causing wobble (sway or wobbling) so that the brake judder does not become large when the brake is working.
[0004]
There are various types of suspension systems for automobiles in which a road wheel is mounted (a brake disk is also mounted). For example, a road wheel and a brake disc for a road wheel are bolted to a hub having a spindle that rotates by an antifriction bearing, and the rolling bearing is fitted in a housing. The housing is attached to a steering knuckle and other components within the automobile suspension system. An independent, relatively simple component disk is easily machined along its critical surface with considerable accuracy. However, the surface of the hub on which the brake disk is installed is not suitable for achieving the same accuracy. Certainly the surface of the hub is machined, but since the machining is done before assembly, both the bearing on which the hub rotates and the surface on which it is mounted are subject to runout on the surface where the brake disc is installed. Will contribute. This runout is transmitted to the brake disc itself.
[0005]
DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to a process for providing a rotating hub of a hub assembly in which the runout from the hub assembly is not transmitted to a brake disk attached to the mounting surface because it has a mounting surface that is essentially free of runout. The hub includes a spindle that rotates with a bearing in the housing, both of which also form part of the hub assembly. The hub has a flange at one end of the spindle with a surface that lies away from the housing. The surface is machined while the housing is firmly held and the hub rotates on the bearing so that the surface that is the mounting surface rotates essentially without wobbling. The present invention also relates to the process of assembling the hub assembly and the hub assembly itself.
[0006]
The best mode for carrying out the invention (FIG. 1) will be described. The hub assembly A is mounted on a component C of the automobile suspension system, which makes it possible to rotate the load wheel W about the axis of rotation X with respect to the component C. The hub assembly A not only has a load wheel W attached to it, but also has a brake disc B that rotates about axis X as well. In fact, disk B rotates essentially without wobbling at its critical friction surfaces, which is often the result of machining steps performed during manufacture of hub assembly A.
