Description
(第1の実施形態)
図2は、本発明の第1の実施形態の液晶表示装置を示す平面図である。この図2では、TFT基板に設けられた2つ分の画素を示している。また、図3に、図2のI−I線による模式的断面を示す。なお、以下の説明中の数値は、パネルサイズが15インチ、セルギャップが3.8〜4.4μmのXGA(1024×768ピクセル)タイプの液晶表示装置のときの例を示している。
以下、第2の実施形態について説明する。
上述した第2の実施形態の液晶表示装置を実際に製造し、その特性を調べた。但し、斜めスリット116bの幅は3μm、長さは7μm、ピッチは7μmとした。その結果、本実施形態の液晶表示装置は、第1の実施形態の液晶表示装置に比べて透過率が約15%向上した。
図11は本発明の第3の実施形態の液晶表示装置を示す平面図である。なお、第3の実施形態が第2の実施形態と異なる点は画素電極に形成されたスリットのパターン形状と対向基板に形成された突起のパターン形状とが異なることにあり、その他の構成は基本的に第2の実施形態と同様であるので、図11において図10と同一物には同一符号を付してその詳しい説明は省略する。また、図11においては、補助容量バスライン及び補助容量電極の図示を省略している。
以下、第4の実施形態について説明する。
図14は本発明の第5の実施形態の液晶表示装置を示す平面図、図15は図14のII−II線による模式断面図である。なお、本実施形態が第3の実施形態と異なる点はTFT基板側の画素電極に設けられたスリットのパターン形状と対向基板側に設けられた突起のパターン形状とが異なることにあり、その他の基本的な構成は第3の実施形態と同様であるので、図14において図11と同一物には同一符号を付してその詳しい説明を省略する。
図16は本発明の第6の実施形態に係る液晶表示装置の平面図、図17は図16のIII-III 線による模式断面図である。なお、本実施形態が第3の実施形態と異なる点は突起がTFT基板側に形成されていることにあり、その他の構成は基本的に第3の実施形態と同様であるので、図16において図11と同一物には同一符号を付してその詳しい説明を省略する。
図18は本発明の第7の実施形態の液晶表示装置を示す平面図、図19は図18のIV−IV線による模式断面図である。なお、本実施形態が第6の実施形態と異なる点は、TFT基板側に設けられた突起のパターン形状と画素電極のスリットのパターン形状とが異なることにあり、その他の構成は基本的に第6の実施形態と同様であるので、同一物には同一符号を付してその詳しい説明は省略する。
(第8の実施形態)
以下、本発明の第8の実施形態について説明する。
前記画素電極に対向して配置されるコモン電極が形成された第2の基板と、
前記第1の基板と前記第2の基板との間に封入された垂直配向型液晶により構成される液晶層とを有する液晶表示装置において、
1つの画素領域が複数の矩形の領域に分割され、前記矩形の領域の隣り合う2辺は誘電体からなる土手状の突起により画定され、残りの2辺は前記画素電極のエッジにより画定されて、前記画素電極と前記コモン電極との間に電圧を印加したときに液晶分子が前記矩形の領域の各辺に交差する方向に配向することを特徴とする液晶表示装置。
前記画素電極に対向して配置されるコモン電極が形成された第2の基板と、
前記第1の基板と前記第2の基板との間に封入された垂直配向型液晶により構成される液晶層とを有する液晶表示装置において、
前記画素電極は液晶分子の配向方向を規定するストライプ状のスリットを有し、前記スリットの幅をS、スリット間の間隔をL、セルギャップをDとしたときに、
L+D−S≧4μmを満足することを特徴とする液晶表示装置。

Claims (3)
- 各画素領域毎に画素電極が形成された第1の基板と、
前記画素電極に対向して配置されるコモン電極が形成された第2の基板と、
前記第1の基板と前記第2の基板との間に封入された垂直配向型液晶により構成される液晶層とを有する液晶表示装置において、
1つの画素領域が複数の矩形の領域に分割され、前記矩形の領域の隣り合う2辺は誘電体からなる土手状の突起により画定され、残りの2辺は前記画素電極のエッジにより画定されて、前記画素電極と前記コモン電極との間に電圧を印加したときに液晶分子が前記矩形の領域の各辺に交差する方向に配向することを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 前記液晶層中には、前記液晶分子の配向方向を記憶する重合体が形成されていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記矩形の領域の辺を画定するエッジ側の部分に、電圧印加時の前記液晶分子の配向方向に延在する斜めスリットが設けられていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
