Description
The present invention belongs to the technical field of a liquid crystal device, a method for manufacturing a liquid crystal device, and a projection display device, and in particular, a liquid crystal device configured such that an alignment film formed on a substrate is not exposed to the outside, and a method for manufacturing a liquid crystal device And belongs to the technical field of projection display devices.
In general, in a liquid crystal device, for example, in the case of a liquid crystal device having a thin film transistor (hereinafter referred to as TFT) as a switching element, a sealing material is provided along the edge on the TFT array substrate, and a display is provided on the inside thereof. An area is provided. Then, a counter substrate is disposed opposite to the TFT array substrate via a sealing material, and liquid crystal is sandwiched between the TFT array substrate and the counter substrate. In addition, a drive circuit, a drive circuit connection terminal, and the like are provided in a region outside the sealing material on the TFT array substrate. Further, an alignment film made of an organic thin film such as a polyimide thin film subjected to a predetermined alignment process such as a rubbing process for holding liquid crystal molecules is provided on the surface of the TFT array substrate and the surface of the counter substrate, respectively. Yes.
Here, on the TFT array substrate, TFTs, pixel electrodes, and various wirings are formed in the display area, a drive circuit, a drive circuit connection terminal, and the like are formed in the outer area, and an insulating film is formed so as to cover them. After forming a polyimide thin film on the entire surface of the TFT array substrate, an alignment film is formed by performing an alignment treatment on the surface of the polyimide thin film. After that, a counter substrate on which an alignment film is formed is disposed opposite to the TFT array substrate via a sealing material, and a gap between the TFT array substrate and the counter substrate is formed through a liquid crystal sealing hole (a portion where no sealing material is previously formed). Liquid crystal is sealed in and the liquid crystal sealing port is closed with a sealing material.
However, in the liquid crystal device having such a configuration, an alignment film is formed not only in the display area of the TFT array substrate but also in the outer area. There is a problem that the moisture is absorbed, and the moisture penetrates the polyimide thin film and reaches the display region to deteriorate the performance. That is, the conventional liquid crystal device has a problem of poor moisture resistance.
Therefore, for example, a member that does not absorb humidity may be formed on the alignment film in a region outside the display region of the TFT array substrate, and the surface of the alignment film may be covered with such a member. However, in such a configuration, a region outside the display region of the TFT array substrate is formed with a drive circuit, a drive circuit connection terminal, and the like and has a considerably large area. In addition, the device cannot be accommodated in a conventional frame case for accommodating such a liquid crystal device, and thus the size of the device is increased.
The present invention has been made in view of the above-described problems. A liquid crystal device, a liquid crystal device manufacturing method, and a projection that can improve moisture resistance without requiring labor and without increasing the size of the device. It is an object to provide a mold display device.
Method of manufacturing a liquid crystal device of the present invention includes the steps of forming an alignment film on one surface of the first substrate, said the placed sealing material alignment film is interposed, and one surface of said first substrate first forming a step of bonding the second substrate, on the overhanging from the first and the second substrate of the substrate region, a non-hygroscopic member so as to cover the end surface of the alignment layer which is not covered by the sealing member In the step of forming the non-hygroscopic member, after forming the non-hygroscopic member along the outer periphery of the sealing material, the non-hygroscopic member is partially cured, and then the remaining A portion of the non-hygroscopic member is cured .
Further, in the step of forming the non-hygroscopic member, a part of the non-hygroscopic member formed along two opposing sides of the first substrate is cured, and thereafter, the remaining of the first substrate is left. The remaining part of the non-hygroscopic member formed along the two sides is cured.
According to such a configuration of the present invention, the alignment film exposed outward from the display region and the seal region surrounding the display region is removed, and further, the alignment film exposed outward from the seal region is at least covered. Since a non-hygroscopic member can be formed along the outer periphery of the seal region, it is possible to manufacture a liquid crystal device with good moisture resistance without requiring labor and without increasing the size of the device. Have After the first substrate and the second substrate are bonded together in this way, the
Moreover, according to such a structure, the concentration of the shrinkage | contraction effect | action at the time of hardening of a non-hygroscopic member can be suppressed. That is, if the non-hygroscopic member is cured at a time, the force for contracting the first and second substrates (display area portions) inside thereof increases, and as a result, the first substrate and the second substrate There is a risk that the gap of the gap becomes narrower or wider. For such a problem, according to the configuration of the present invention, after the non-hygroscopic member is disposed on the outer periphery of the seal region, a part of the non-hygroscopic member is cured, and then the remaining non-hygroscopic member is formed. Since the first and second substrates (display area portions) are contracted so as to be cured, the contraction action does not concentrate in the center of the display area, and the gap between the first substrate and the second substrate Can be prevented from narrowing or widening.
In addition, the method for manufacturing a liquid crystal device according to the present invention further includes a step of attaching a transparent substrate to the opposite surface of the second substrate opposite to the surface facing the first substrate through a silicon-based adhesive. The hygroscopic member is preferably made of an epoxy or acrylic member. According to such a configuration, it is possible to eliminate the defect that the silicon-based adhesive causes an effect inhibition.
Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings.
(Configuration and operation of one embodiment of liquid crystal device)
The configuration and operation of an embodiment of the liquid crystal device according to the present invention will be described with reference to FIGS. 1 is a plan view of the liquid crystal device according to the present embodiment, FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line HH ′ of the liquid crystal device shown in FIG. 1, and FIG. 3 is an enlarged view of an I arrow shown in FIG. FIG.
In FIG. 1, a
Around the
In the
In a region outside the
As shown in FIG. 2, on the
Here, the
Further, a
As shown in FIG. 3, an
Further, as shown in FIGS. 1 to 3, a non-hygroscopic material made of an epoxy or acrylic member along the outer periphery of the
As described above, according to the liquid crystal device of the present embodiment, the
From the viewpoint of improving the moisture resistance, as shown in FIG. 4, the alignment films in those regions so as to cover the
Note that an inspection circuit or the like for inspecting the quality, defects, and the like of the liquid crystal device during manufacturing or at the time of shipment may be further formed on the
In addition, since the liquid crystal device in the above embodiment is applied to, for example, a color liquid crystal projector (projection display device), three liquid crystal devices are used as RGB light valves, and each panel has an RGB color. The light of each color decomposed through the decomposition dichroic mirror is incident as projection light. Therefore, in this embodiment, the
Further, a dichroic filter that creates RGB colors by using interference of light may be formed by depositing multiple layers of interference layers having different refractive indexes on the
(Manufacturing process of liquid crystal device)
Next, an example of a manufacturing process of the liquid crystal device having the above configuration will be described with reference to FIGS.
As shown in step (1) of FIG. 5, a
As shown in step (2), after applying a polyimide alignment film coating solution on the entire surface of the
Next, as shown in step (3), the
Next, as shown in step (4), for example, a plurality of types of nematic liquid crystals are mixed into the gap between the
Next, as shown in step (5) of FIG. 6, the
Next, as shown in step (6), an epoxy or acrylic resin is applied along the outer periphery of the
Next, as shown in step (7), a
As described above, according to the manufacturing method of the present embodiment, it is possible to manufacture a liquid crystal device having good moisture resistance without requiring labor and without increasing the size of the device.
Next, a preferred embodiment for forming the
First, as shown in step (A) of FIG. 7, a
Next, as shown in step (B), a
Next, as shown in step (C), a
Through the above steps, the
Here, when the
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 7, the
That is, first, as shown in step (A) of FIG. 8, the
Next, as shown in step (B), a

Furthermore, as another embodiment of the present invention, microlenses may be formed on the

(Electronics)
As an example of an electronic apparatus using the above liquid crystal device, a configuration of a projection display device will be described with reference to FIG. In FIG. 9, a
The uniform illumination
Each color separation
Next, in the green reflection
Condensing
The collimated red and green light beams R and G are incident on the light valves 925R and 925G and modulated, and image information corresponding to each color light is added. That is, these liquid crystal devices are subjected to switching control according to image information by a driving unit (not shown), and thereby each color light passing therethrough is modulated. On the other hand, the blue light beam B is guided to the corresponding light valve 925B via the
The
The color light beams R, G, and B modulated through the light valves 925R, 925G, and 925B are incident on the color synthesis prism 910 and synthesized there. Then, the light synthesized by the color synthesis prism 910 is enlarged and projected onto the surface of the
In the liquid crystal projector having such a configuration, each light valve has the configuration of the present invention, whereby moisture resistance is improved and display quality deterioration can be prevented.
