Description
【0001】

The present invention relates to electroluminescent materials and devices incorporating the same.
[0002]
Materials that emit light when current is passed through the material are well known and are used in a wide range of display processes. Devices based on liquid crystal devices and inorganic semiconductor systems are widely used. However, they do not produce high energy consumption, high manufacturing costs, low quantum efficiency, and flat panel displays (refractive index issues (ie low visibility under luminance conditions and narrow viewing angle (eg + / -45 °))).
[0003]
Organic polymers have been proposed as useful in electroluminescent devices, but it is impossible to obtain pure colors (organic polymers are expensive to manufacture and have relatively low efficiency ).
[0004]
Another compound that has been proposed is aluminum quinolate, which requires dopants used to obtain a range of colors and has a relatively low efficiency.
[0005]
In the literature Chemistry letters, 657-660, 1990, Kido et al., It was disclosed that the terbium (III) acetylacetone complex was green electroluminescence, and the literature Applied Physics letters 65 (17) 24, 1994 10 Moon, Kido et al. Disclosed that the europium (III) triphenylenediamine complex was red electroluminescence, but was unstable in atmospheric conditions and difficult to make as a film.
[0006]
The complexes described in these documents have relatively low photoluminescence efficiency and can only produce green or red light, no other colors could be made.
[0007]
Here we have invented photoluminescent and electroluminescent compounds and materials that emit blue and blue-violet light.
[0008]
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a photoluminescent compound comprising an organic complex of a transition metal, lanthanide or actinide, and an organic ligand, the photoluminescent compound emitting light in the blue or violet spectrum.
[0009]
Surprisingly, it has been found that by the choice of metal and organic ligand, it is possible to form complexes that emit blue or violet light when an electric current is applied to the complex.
[0010]
The present invention also provides a photoluminescent compound comprising an organic complex of a transition metal, a lanthanide or an actinide, and an organic ligand, which emits light in the blue or bluish spectrum when current is passed through the compound. Provide).
[0011]
The color of light is the subject, and the color can be defined by coordinates on a two-dimensional chart. Here, color is a region on the chart, and in the present invention, the blue and blue-violet spectra are defined as regions limited by coordinates in the color chart CIE I931 (copy shown in FIG. 1). The complex of the present invention makes it possible to generate light in the coordinates (0,0) (0,0.3) (0.3,0).
[0012]
Light in the blue region of the spectrum is difficult to produce and so far it has not been possible to produce blue light by electroluminescence.
[0013]
Preferred metals are thorium (IV), yttrium (III), gadolinium (III), europium (II), terbium (IV), cerium (IV), and cerium (III). A mixture of metals can be used to form a mixed chelate.
[0014]
Preferred ligands are:
[0015]
[Chemical formula 2]
Where R ′ is the same or different in different parts of the molecule, and each R ″ and R ′ is a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic or heterocyclic structure, or a hydrocarbyl or fluorocarbon. Or R ″ is fluorine or hydrogen, or R ″ is copolymerized with a monomer (eg, R ′ is t-butyl and R ″ is hydrogen).
[0016]
Preferably, each of R ′, R ″ and R ′ is preferably an alkyl group of a —C (CH 3 ) group.
[0017]
Preferred complexes are TMHD (tris (2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionate), α ′, α ″, α ″ ′ tripyridyl, butofen (4,7-diphenyl-1,1 -Phenanthroline), crown ethers and cryptans.
[0018]
Particularly preferred complexes are thorium batophene, yttrium tripyridyl and TMHD, and europium TMHD complexes, novel complexes with strong photoluminescent and electroluminescent properties are Eu (II) stable in air (TMHD) 2 complex. It is surprising that such Eu (II) complexes are expected to be unstable in the presence of oxygen, and that this complex is stable in air.
[0019]
The complexes of the invention can be used to form electroluminescent devices.
[0020]
The electroluminescent device of the present invention contains a transparent substrate that is conductive glass, or a plastic material that acts as an anode. The preferred substrate is a conductive glass, such as a glass coated with indium tin oxide, but any glass that is conductive or any glass having a conductive layer may be used. Conductive polymers and glass or plastic materials coated with conductive polymers can also be used as substrates. The electroluminescent material can be deposited directly on the substrate by evaporation from a solution of the material in an organic solvent. The solvent used depends on the material, for example alcohols such as ethanol, ketones such as acetone and methylacetylacetone, and chlorinated hydrocarbons such as dichloromethane are suitable in many cases.
[0021]
Alternatively, the material can be deposited from the solid state by spin coating or by vacuum deposition (eg, by sputtering or any other conventional method can be used).
[0022]
In one embodiment of the invention, there is a hole transporting layer deposited on a transparent substrate, and an electroluminescent material is deposited on the hole transporting layer. This hole transport layer acts to transport holes and block electrons, thus preventing the electrons from moving to the electrode without recombining with the holes. Therefore, carrier recombination occurs mainly in the emitter layer.
[0023]
The hole transport layer can be used in polymer electroluminescence to use devices in film form and any known hole transport material.
[0024]
The hole transport layer is formed from an aromatic amine complex (for example, poly (vinylcarbazole), N, N′-diphenyl-N, N′-bis (3-methylphenyl) -1,1′-biphenyl-4,4′- Diamine (TPD), polyaniline, etc.).
[0025]
If desired, dyes (eg, fluorescent laser dyes, luminescent laser dyes, etc.) can be included to modify the color spectrum of the emission.
[0026]
Preferably, the electroluminescent material is mixed with an inert polymeric material (eg, polyolefin (eg, polyethylene, polypropylene, etc.) and preferably polystyrene). The preferred amount of electroluminescent material in the mixture is 95% to 5% by weight of the active material, and more preferably 25% to 20%.
[0027]
The hole transport compound can optionally be mixed with the electroluminescent material in a ratio of 5-95% electroluminescent material to 95-5% hole transport compound. In another embodiment of the invention, there is a layer of electron injecting material between the cathode and the electroluminescent material layer, which preferably injects electrons when the electron stream passes through it. Metal complexes such as transporting metal quinolates (eg, aluminum quinolates). Alternatively, the electron injecting material can be mixed with the electroluminescent material and co-deposited with the electroluminescent material.
[0028]
In a preferred structure, there is a substrate formed from a transparent conductive material. The substrate is an anode on which a hole transport layer, an electroluminescent material layer, and an electron injection layer connected to the anode are sequentially deposited. The anode can be any low work function metal (eg, aluminum, calcium, lithium, silver / magnesium alloy, etc.).
[0029]
The preparation of the compounds of the invention is shown in the examples.

Mono (α ′, α ″, α ′ ″ tripyridyl) gadolinium (III) chloride. Gadolinium (III) chloride (0.37 g, 1 mmol) was dissolved in ethanol (150 ml) and α ′, α ″, α ′ ″ tripyridyl (0.23 g, 1 mmol) was added. The reaction mixture was heated under reflux for 1 hour and the solvent was removed in vacuo to give the gadolinium adduct (yield 0.50 g).
[0034]
(Example 5)
Bis (2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionate) europium (II). The reaction was performed under anhydrous conditions using dry glassware under dry nitrogen and acetylnitrile freshly distilled with diphosphorus pentoxide. Europium (II) chloride (1.0 g, 5 mmol) was placed in a three-necked 250 ml round bottom flask equipped with a condenser, two addition funnels and a nitrogen bubbler. A deoxygenated solution of diketone (1.84 g, 10 mmol) in acetylnitrile (50 ml) was placed in the first addition funnel and deoxygenated acetylnitrile (150 ml) was placed in the second addition funnel. Arranged. Both funnels were under nitrogen and equipped with a nitrogen balloon. Acetonitrile was poured into the flask and stirred at 50 ° C. (oil bath) until the mixture dissolved. The diketone solution was then added to the flask and the reaction mixture was refluxed for 1 hour and cooled overnight under nitrogen. Dry diethyl ether was dried at 60 ° C. in vacuo. (Yield 0.82 g). The filtrate was dried to obtain pale yellow tris (2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionate) europium (II) (yield 0.90 g).
[0035]
An electroluminescent device was assembled and tested.
[0036]
(I. Device assembly)
A piece of ITO coated glass (1 × 1 cm 2 from a large sheet purchased from Balzers, Switzerland) has a portion etched with concentrated hydrochloric acid to remove the ITO and is washed and spin coater (CPS 10 BM, Semitec, Germany) and centrifuged at 2000 rpm for 30 seconds, during which time the solution of the electroluminescent compound was pipetted dropwise onto it.
[0037]
Alternatively, ITO coated glass pieces by placing the electroluminescent compound in a vacuum coater and evaporating the electroluminescent compound on the substrate at 10 -5 to 10 -6 torr. Was evaporated in vacuo.
[0038]
The organic coating on the part etched with concentrated hydrochloric acid was wiped off with a cotton bud.
[0039]
The coated electrode was stored on calcium sulfate in a vacuum desiccator until the coated electrode was loaded into a vacuum coater (Edwards, 10-6 Torr) to make the aluminum top contact. The active portion of the LED was 0.08 cm 2 × 0.1 cm 2 and the device was then stored in a vacuum desiccator until electroluminescence studies were performed.
[0040]
The ITO electrode is always connected to the positive terminal. Current versus voltage studies were performed with a computer controlled Keithly 2400 power meter.
[0041]
Electroluminescence spectra were recorded by a computer controlled charge coupled device device in model 77II2 (Oriel Co., Surrey, England) of the Insta Spec photodiode array system.
[0042]
(2. Photoluminescence measurement)
Photoluminescence was excited using a 325 nm line of a Linconix 4207 NB, He / Cd laser. Laser power incidence (0.3 mWcm −2 ) on the sample was measured with a Linconix 55PM laser power meter. Luminance calibration was performed using a Bentham luminance standard (Bentham SRS8, lamp current 4,000 A, calibration by National Physical Laboratory, England). PL studies were performed on samples or films. The example complexes were tested and the results are shown in the table and in the spectra attached as FIGS.
