Description
【0001】

The present invention relates to a method for driving a plasma display device, which is widely used as a flat display for public display of large televisions, advertisements and information.

An example of the configuration of a general surface discharge AC plasma display panel (hereinafter referred to as AC-PDP) used in a plasma display device is shown in FIG . FIG. 3A is a perspective view showing a part of the structure of the AC-PDP. As shown in FIG. 3A, in the

[0006]
In order to actually drive the surface discharge AC-PDP shown in FIG. 3 , various driving methods, driving methods, and driving circuits have been proposed (eg, Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 2000-242224).
[0007]
FIG. 4 is a diagram showing an example of a timing chart for driving the surface discharge AC-PDP . FIG. 4 shows one subfield in a driving method in which one frame period for displaying one screen is divided into a plurality of subfields. The drive waveform is shown. This subfield is divided into an initializing period, a writing period, a sustaining period, and an erasing period . A drive voltage composed of a series of pulses shown in the timing chart of FIG. 4 is applied to the scan electrode 2 (SC1, SC2,..., SCn) group. Display drive can be performed by applying the terminal, sustain electrode 3 (SU1, SU2,..., SUn) group terminal and address electrode 4 (A1, A2,..., An) group terminal. [Problems to be solved by the invention]
In the present day when an electric product that suppresses power consumption as much as possible is desired, it is expected that the power consumption during driving is reduced even in the AC-PDP. In particular, due to the recent trend toward larger screens and higher definition, the power consumption of the developed AC-PDP tends to increase. Therefore, there is an increasing demand for a technology for realizing power saving.
[0014]
However, simply by taking measures to reduce the power consumption of the AC-PDP, in the surface discharge type AC-PDP as described above, a discharge scale generated between a plurality of pairs of display electrodes is reduced, and a sufficient amount of light emission is obtained. Therefore, it is necessary to obtain good display performance while suppressing power consumption, that is, to obtain good light emission efficiency. If the light emission amount is insufficient, the display performance of the PDP deteriorates. Therefore, it is difficult to say that measures such as simply reducing the power consumption of the PDP are effective measures for improving the light emission efficiency.
[0015]
In addition, in order to improve the luminous efficiency, for example, studies have been made to improve the conversion efficiency when phosphors convert ultraviolet light into visible light, but at the present stage there has been no significant improvement, and AC -In a gas discharge display device such as a PDP, there is still room for research to appropriately ensure luminous efficiency.
[0016]
For example, in the driving method of the surface discharge AC-PDP as shown in FIG. 4 , the
[0017]
The present invention has been made to solve these problems, and appropriately secures luminous efficiency, thereby ensuring a discharge scale for obtaining good display performance while having low power consumption. An object of the present invention is to provide a method for driving an AC-PDP that enables this.
[0018]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to solve the above-described problem, a driving method of a plasma display apparatus according to the present invention includes a plurality of row electrodes, which are adjacent to each other and arranged in parallel, and which are paired with a scan electrode and a sustain electrode, and intersect the row electrode. A plurality of column electrodes, and a plurality of discharge cells formed in a region where the row electrode and the column electrode intersect with each other, wherein the initializing discharge is performed in the plurality of discharge cells. An initializing period to be generated, a writing period for writing display data by forming wall charges in the discharge cells in accordance with display data, and scan electrodes and sustain electrodes of the discharge cells in which the display data is written in the writing period A sustain period in which a sustain pulse is alternately applied to the row electrodes consisting of the sustain electrodes to generate a sustain discharge, and the column electrodes are synchronized with the sustain pulses in the sustain period. Is not configured to apply a pulse voltage and a pulse width of the sustain pulse applied to the row electrodes in the sustain period and t 1, when the pulse width of the pulse applied to the column electrodes set to t 2, t 1 > T 2 and the pulse applied to the column electrode starts to be applied when the time (t 1 −t 2 ) elapses after the sustain pulse is applied to the row electrode. Features.
[0019]
With these configurations, by applying a voltage to the address electrode during the sustain discharge period, electrons emitted from the sustain electrode can be drawn to the address electrode side, and the discharge can be started and spread to the discharge on the sustain electrode side. The plasma generated by the discharge expands, and the ultraviolet rays from the plasma can be brought closer to the phosphor layer to excite visible light, increase the emission intensity of the AC-PDP, and bright and bright. An AC-PDP display device can be realized.

Note that the configuration of the surface discharge type AC-PDP display panel and the display unit to which the drive circuit is attached used in the description of the embodiment of the present invention is the same as the configuration shown in FIG. However, the present invention is not limited to the example using this configuration.
[0021]

Similarly to the timing chart for driving the general AC-PDP shown in FIG. 4 , the drive voltage consisting of a series of pulses is applied to the scan electrode 2 (SC1, SC2,..., SCn) group terminal and the sustain electrode 3 ( The display is driven by being applied to the SU1, SU2,..., SUn) group terminals and the address electrode 4 (A1, A2,..., An) group terminals. 【The invention's effect】
As described above, the AC-PDP driving method of the present invention is configured to apply the pulse voltage to the column electrode in synchronization with the sustain pulse in the sustain period, and to maintain the voltage applied to the row electrode in the sustain period. When the pulse width of the pulse is t 1 and the pulse width of the pulse applied to the column electrode is t 2 , the configuration is such that t 1 > t 2, and the pulse applied to the column electrode is maintained at the row electrode. By starting application when the time (t 1 -t 2 ) elapses after the pulse is applied, electrons emitted from the sustain electrode are drawn to the address electrode side, discharge is started, and the sustain electrode side By connecting to the discharge, the attenuation of the ultraviolet (UV) light generated by the discharge plasma is reduced, and the light emission can be made highly efficient. As a result, the light emission efficiency is appropriately secured and the power consumption is low, but the power consumption is good.
