Description
The present invention relates to a therapeutic radiation source, and more particularly to a power-saving, high-efficiency, and miniaturized radiation source using an optically driven hot cathode (or a thermoelectron cathode).
In the medical field, therapeutic radiation such as X-rays and γ-rays is used for diagnosis, treatment, and palliative treatment of patients. Conventional radiation sources used for treatment include large, stationary machines, small, mobile radiation generating probes, and the like. Current treatment systems also use computers to create complex treatment plans.
Conventional radiation systems utilized for medical use utilize a high-power remote radiation source and direct a beam of radiation to a target area (or target area), such as a tumor in a patient's body. This type of treatment is called teletherapy because the radiation source is located at a predetermined distance from the target area. However, these treatments have the disadvantage that the tissue present between the radiation source and the target area is exposed to radiation. Teletherapy radiation sources that apply radiation from outside the patient to a target area inside the patient exist not only in the tissue of the target area, but also between where the radiation is incident and where the radiation exits. There is a high possibility of damage to the tissue in the surrounding area.
Brachytherapy, on the other hand, treats a patient by placing a radiation source near or within the area to be treated. Brachytherapy is superior to teletherapy in that it treats only a pre-determined tissue portion and applies radiation so as not to significantly affect surrounding tissue. Brachytherapy generally refers to a treatment that uses a “seed”, ie, a capsule radioisotope, that can be placed directly in or near the target tissue to be treated. However, the handling and disposal of such radioisotopes poses a great risk to the people and environment that handle them.
In this application, the term “X-ray brachytherapy” shall mean X-ray radiation therapy in which an X-ray source is placed in or near the area to be treated. Nomikos et al. U.S. Pat. No. 5,153,900, Sliski et al. U.S. Pat.No. 5,369,679, and Smith et al. U.S. Pat. An activated X-ray brachytherapy system utilizing a small, low-power radiation source is disclosed. (These patents are incorporated herein by reference.) The X-ray brachytherapy system disclosed in the aforementioned patents is small and capable of generating X-rays in or near the target tissue. With a probe that can be inserted into the body, it is not necessary for the radiation to pass through the patient's skin, bone, or other tissue in order to reach the target tissue.
The insertable probe emits low-power x-rays from a nominal “point” radiation source located in or near the appropriate area for treatment. Therefore, X-ray brachytherapy allows X-rays to be applied only to a predefined tissue volume without adversely affecting the tissue surrounding the tissue to be treated. X-rays are applied to a predetermined geometric volume in a predetermined amount at a predetermined location. X-ray brachytherapy can take advantage of brachytherapy without using radioisotopes. X-ray brachytherapy also allows the operator to control the amount (or dose) and time of administration of the X-ray radiation emitted.
X-ray brachytherapy usually removes a tumor or part of a tumor in order to treat the area from which the tumor or part of the tumor has been removed with a radiation source with a localized output end It is necessary to place an insertable probe in the area. An X-ray probe of the type disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 5,153,900 is a hollow case having a casing and a target member (or a target member) for X-ray emission that extends from the casing along the axis and has a tip at the tip. A tubular (or tubular) probe or catheter is provided. The probe typically contains an electron beam source (or electron source), such as a hot cathode (or thermionic cathode).
As another form of X-ray brachytherapy, the X-ray probe of US Pat. No. 5,428,658 comprises a flexible (or flexible) probe, such as a flexible optical fiber covered with a metal sheath. ing. The X-ray probe of this patent includes a substantially rigid (or rigid) capsule connected to the tip of a flexible probe. The capsule contains an electron beam source and an X-ray radioactive target member. A photocathode may be used as the electron beam source. When a photocathode is used, a photoelectron emitting substance is irradiated by an LED or laser source to generate free electrons. Typically, flexible fiber optic cables are used to couple (or propagate) light from an LED or laser source to the photocathode.
U.S. Pat. Nos. 5,133,900 and 5,428,658 disclose establishing an accelerating electric field between an electron beam source and a target member. The established electric field is used to accelerate electrons emitted from the electron beam source toward the target member. The target member emits radiation in response to electrons incident from the electron beam source.
One type of prior art hot cathode utilizes a filament that is heated by current and resistance to current. Heat from the filament heats the cathode, and electrons are generated by thermionic emission. A cathode assembly of a prior art X-ray apparatus utilizing a hot cathode heated by such a resistance is composed of a thorium tungsten coil having a diameter of about 2 mm and a length of about 2 cm, for example. The thorium tungsten coil emits electrons by thermionic emission when heated by a current and resistance of 4 A or more. In one form, the coil is covered by a metal focusing cup to focus the generated electron beam onto a small spot on the opposing anode that acts as the target (or target) for the electron beam. It may be. The beam is typically focused (or focused) on a spot on the anode in the range of about 0.3 mm to 2.5 mm. In many applications, energy from the electron beam is converted to heat on the anode. In order to cope with such heat, high power medical x-ray sources often utilize a water-cooled, rapidly rotating anode. Such a configuration establishes an improved and effective target area (or target area) that allows a small focused spot while minimizing the effects of localized heating.
In order to achieve excellent thermal conductivity and effective heat dissipation, the anode is usually made from copper. Further, the region where the electron beam of the anode is incident needs to be formed of a material having a large atomic number so that X-rays are effectively generated. In order to meet the requirements for good thermal conductivity, effective heat dissipation, and effective x-ray production, tungsten alloys are typically embedded in copper.
It is desirable that the electron beam source be heated as effectively as possible. That is, it is desirable for the hot cathode to reach the highest possible temperature with as little power as possible. However, for example, in the case of a conventional X-ray tube, thermal evaporation of a coiled cathode disposed in the tube is likely to cause failure of the tube. In addition, an anode heated to an unnecessarily high temperature may cause the radiation output to deteriorate. For example, when exposed to an X-ray source for a relatively long time of about 1 to 3 seconds, the temperature of the anode rises to such an extent that the anode shines, and the surface of the anode starts to melt locally, resulting in holes. The radiation output is degraded.
The photocathode can avoid the above-mentioned problems, but when using the photocathode, there is a problem that it is difficult to produce the photocathode. The photocathode must have sufficient quantum efficiency (where quantum efficiency is a quantity related to the number of electrons generated per incident photon (photon)). This efficiency should be balanced with the effective incident light intensity. In the case of a substantially usable material with a suitable quantum efficiency of 10 −3 or higher, the photocathode must be made in a vacuum. U.S. Pat. No. 5,428,658, assigned to the present applicant, discloses that manufacturing in a vacuum state can be performed using an optical fiber cable placed in a bell jar. (These patents are incorporated herein by reference.) These prior art techniques can be used, for example, to produce a photosurface of Ag-O-Cs. However, these optical fiber cables must be inserted into a tubular probe without exposure to air, and the ends of the optical fiber cables must be sealed to the probe in a vacuum.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a highly efficient and compact radiation source that achieves significant power savings. Another object of the present invention is to provide a compact radiation source with an electron beam source that generates electrons with minimal heat loss without the need for a photocathode made in a vacuum. Another object of the present invention is to provide a compact radiation source that uses laser energy rather than utilizing ohmic heating to heat the hot cathode. This method creates the flow of electrons (or electron flow) necessary to generate therapeutic radiation in the target area (or target area) while significantly reducing the power required by the radiation source. A sufficient amount of electrons can be generated.
1)熱伝導による熱損失;
In order to reduce the power required for the laser-heated therapeutic radiation source described above, it is desirable to minimize the heat loss of the hot cathode. The heat loss of the laser-heated hot cathode includes the following elements.
1) Heat loss due to heat conduction;
2) heat loss due to the unabsorbed portion of the incident laser radiation; and
3) Heat loss due to heat radiation.
Accordingly, another object of the present invention is to increase the efficiency of the laser heated hot cathode of the radiation source by reducing the amount of heat loss due to incident laser radiation that remains unabsorbed by the hot cathode. is there. Another object of the present invention is to reduce the heat loss caused by heat conduction in the laser heated hot cathode, thereby increasing the efficiency of the laser driven radiation source and reducing power consumption.
U.S. Pat. Nos. 5,133,900 and 5,428,658 disclose an electron beam source and target member housed in a substantially rigid (or rigid) capsule. The electron beam source generates an electron beam along the beam path, and a target member is disposed in the beam path. An electric field for acceleration is established in the capsule. The electric field for acceleration acts to accelerate the electrons emitted from the electron beam source toward the target member. In response to incident electrons from the electron beam source, the target member emits therapeutic radiation.
The capsule defines a substantially vacuum interior region that extends along the axis of the electron beam. Usually, the inner surface of prior art capsules is covered with an electrically insulating material. In the apparatus such as the above-described X-ray probe, a vacuum is used as an insulation against a high voltage. However, the reliability of the vacuum suddenly loses the insulation capacity of the vacuum space, and electrical breakdown (or dielectric breakdown) occurs. When it occurs, there is a risk of unpredictable “sparking” and “arcing”. Also, effective generation of X-rays requires that the electron path be directed directly from the cathode to the target. When electrons deviate in the direction of the side surface due to the influence of charging of the insulator, the efficiency of X-ray generation is reduced and the stability of X-ray output is reduced.
Therefore, another object of the present invention is to prevent such electrical breakdown and stabilize the X-ray output. In order to prevent electrical breakdown and stabilize the X-ray output, it is important to establish a substantially uniform voltage gradient in the region between the electron beam source and the target. The present invention provides a highly efficient and compact therapeutic radiation source by creating a substantially uniform voltage gradient in the vacuum region between the electron beam source and the target member.
The present invention relates to a small therapeutic radiation source with a low power, electron beam driven radiation source. Specifically, the apparatus of the present invention includes a hot cathode heated by an optical radiation source, preferably a laser.
Therapeutic radiation sources according to the present invention include a radiation generating assembly, an optical radiation source, and a probe assembly. The optical radiation source is preferably a laser (or laser device) that produces a substantially monochromatic, coherent beam of radiation. The radiation generating assembly is rated to have an electron beam source for emitting electrons that form an electron beam along a beam path along a linear reference axis and a target member (or target member) disposed on the beam path. )including. The electron beam source is preferably an optically driven hot cathode with an electron emitting surface.
In one embodiment of the invention, the optically driven hot cathode has a spiral (or spiral) shape. With this configuration, heat loss due to heat conduction in the hot cathode is minimized. In this embodiment, a spiral hot cathode is preferred and is made from a spiral conductive member. The spiral-shaped conductive member has a plurality of “windings” spaced apart from each other, and defines a gap space (or gap) between successive “windings” of the conductive member. Since the spiral shaped conductive member is housed in a substantially vacuum interior space, heat conduction through the interstitial space between successive turns of the conductive member is substantially eliminated. Minimizing heat loss due to heat conduction results in increased efficiency of a small hot cathode.
The target member includes means (or member) for emitting therapeutic radiation in response to accelerated incident electrons from an electron beam source (or electron source). In the preferred embodiment, the target member is placed in opposition, spaced from the electron emitting surface of the hot cathode. The target member includes at least one radiation-emitting member configured to emit therapeutic radiation in response to accelerated incident electrons from the hot cathode. The therapeutic radiation source also includes means for providing an accelerating voltage that establishes an accelerating electric field that acts to accelerate electrons emitted from the electron beam source toward the target member.
In one embodiment, the radiation generating assembly further includes a substantially rigid (or rigid) capsule that houses the electron beam source and the target member. Preferably, the electron beam source is located at the proximal end of the capsule and the target member is located at the distal end. The capsule defines a substantially vacuum interior region extending along a nominally linear beam axis between the hot cathode at the proximal end of the capsule and the target member at the distal end. The capsule preferably includes a radiolucent region located at the distal end of the capsule. The total resistance of the inner surface of the capsule is preferred and is high enough to limit the dissipated power to 10% or less of the total power.
In one embodiment of the present invention, the inner surface of the vacuum-like capsule provides a substantially smooth (or uniform) voltage gradient within the capsule between a preselected maximum potential and ground potential. A weakly conductive or semiconductive coating is applied to the inner surface of the capsule and is configured to reduce the secondary emission of electrons that impinge on the coated inner surface of the capsule. The weakly conductive or semiconductive coating is further configured to reduce the electric field in the vicinity of the triple junction point, thereby providing an electrical flashover at the triple junction of the hot cathode. Reduce the possibility of That is, the coating carries a sufficient amount of current to prevent charge accumulation due to field emission and the avalanche and electrical breakdown (or dielectric breakdown) caused thereby.
The probe assembly includes an optical transport structure having a proximal end and a distal end, preferably a fiber optic cable. As shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, the

In the embodiment illustrated in FIGS. 3 and 4, the means for establishing the accelerating electric field is a high voltage power source (or power source) 112. The

1)寸法が小さい;
2)バッテリー電力で動作可能程度に高い効率を持つ;
The high
1) Small dimensions;
2) Highly efficient to operate with battery power;
3) Output independently variable x-ray tube voltage and current to make the device programmable for specific applications.
Preferably, the
In some forms of the invention, the
X-rays are generated at the
In the embodiments described above, the

A getter (or degassing agent) 155 may be disposed inside the
The
During operation, the laser beam incident on the
Another way to increase the efficiency of laser-heated hot cathodes, except for the above-described hot cathode laser energy drive, is to minimize heat loss due to incident laser radiation that remains unabsorbed by the hot cathode. It is. FIG. 6 illustrates one embodiment of the electron beam source of the present invention. This embodiment includes a
FIG. 7 shows an embodiment of the therapeutic radiation source of the present invention including a spiral (or spiral) laser heated
The spiral-shaped
In the case of a disk-shaped or planar tungsten hot cathode, the proportion of incident radiation absorbed at the incident spot of the cathode is usually about 40%. And for 40% absorbed, further losses occur due to heat conduction in the cathode. In the illustrated embodiment, the
As described above, since the hot cathode of the present invention is optically driven, even when a disk-shaped planar cathode is used, only a power of several watts is required to generate an electron current of 100 μA or more. do not do. When an infrared diode laser is used with a spiral shaped etched cathode of about 0.5 mm, an electron current of about 100 μA can be achieved with a power of about 180 mW, greatly reducing the power requirements of the device. can do.
8 (a) and 8 (b) illustrate in more detail a

FIG. 9 is in accordance with the present invention where a weakly conductive or semiconductive coating is applied to the inner surface of a rigid capsule containing an electron beam source and target member. FIG. 5 is an enlarged view of the distal end of the radiation generating assembly and the probe assembly. As shown in FIG. 9, the

FIG. 10 (a) shows an enlarged view of the interior of a substantially rigid (or rigid)
As shown in FIG. 10 (a), the

The weakly conductive or semi-conductive
As described above, the reliability of the vacuum in the
There are various physical phenomena that affect the characteristics of the vacuum space and its resistance to electrical breakdown (or dielectric breakdown), such as electrode heating and thermal diffusion and electron emission. The breakdown voltage depends on a variety of parameters including (but not limited to) electrode material and geometry, surface condition and geometry, vacuum quality, and vacuum space spacing and geometry. The electrical breakdown voltage is usually a function of the dielectric constant of the material forming the
A weakly conductive or
FIG. 10B illustrates the
Referring back to FIG. 10 (a), the electric field in the accelerating vacuum region is controlled by a resistive, weakly conductive or
In summary, the present invention significantly reduces the power requirements of a small therapeutic radiation source by heating the hot cathode with laser energy rather than heating the hot cathode with resistance with current. The invention also features the use of a spiral shaped hot cathode configured to minimize the energy loss of incident laser radiation due to heat conduction in the hot cathode. With this configuration, the power required to generate therapeutic radiation with a small radiation source can be greatly reduced. Furthermore, the present invention is characterized by the use of a weakly conductive or semiconductive coating applied (or applied) to the inner surface of the capsule in a vacuum state. This configuration establishes a substantially uniform voltage gradient in the region between the electron beam source and the target, thus preventing high electric field regions and spikes in the vacuum capsule and the potential for electrical breakdown. As well as reducing, it ensures that the electrons propagate directly towards the target (or without deviating from the desired path). Weak conductive or semi-conductive coatings also reduce the possibility of secondary emission of electrons impacting the capsule wall, causing avalanche and thereby electrical breakdown (or breakdown). That is, the field emission current is swept away to prevent charge-up and electrical breakdown.
