<実施例1>
【0064】
<実施例2>
【0076】
<参考例1>
【0084】
<実施例3>
【0088】
<実施例4>

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a contact charger for an image recording apparatus such as an electrophotographic copying machine, a printer, a facsimile machine, as well as Its manufacture On the way It is related.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Conventional charging systems have mainly been corotrons and scorotrons using corona discharge. However, since corona discharge applies an electric field in the air, ozone and NO X There are drawbacks such as the generation of a large amount of harmful substances such as high power consumption due to low charging efficiency, high cost due to the need for a high voltage power supply of 4-6 kV, and danger to the human body. . It is an urgent need to improve such a charging system in consideration of the environment in recent years, and it is shifting to roller charging.
[0003]
FIG. 11 is a schematic cross-sectional view showing a conventional contact charger 1110 (charging roller or conductive rubber roller). In this figure,
[0004]
FIG. 12 is a schematic cross-sectional view showing a conventional contact charger 2110 (charging brush). In this figure,
[0005]
Roller charging is a method in which a conductive rubber roller is brought into contact with a photoconductor, and a discharge is generated in a minute gap between the photoconductor and the charging roller to charge the surface of the photoconductor. Compared with corotron, the amount of ozone generated is smaller. Remarkably reduced (reduced to 1/100 to 1/500).
[0006]
However, since the charging roller also applies a voltage to the minute gap between the photoconductor and the charging roller to cause corona discharge, it is impossible in principle to reduce the amount of ozone generated to zero. Further, since ozone is generated in the vicinity of the photoconductor, deterioration of the photoconductor due to ozone still remains a problem. Therefore, a charging method that does not generate ozone is strongly desired, and recently, a charge injection method has been attracting attention.
[0007]
The charge injection method is a method in which charges are directly injected into a photosensitive layer from a contact charger without causing discharge. Therefore, ozone is not generated in principle. In charge injection, the contact resistance between the contact-type charger and the photosensitive member and the capacity of the minute gap affect the injection speed when the charge is injected, so it is considered that the lower the contact resistance, the better.
[0008]
Therefore, in the technique described in JP-A-6-75459, a charge transfer complex comprising an electron accepting compound such as tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) and an electron donating compound such as tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) is used. Is replaced with a polymer network, and a charging roller is made of a conductive rubber made of a polymer material imparted with conductivity.
[0009]
However, Japan Hardcopy '92, pp. By Kagawa, Furukawa, Shinkawa et al. According to a report of 287 to 290, an organic photoreceptor (hereinafter sometimes abbreviated as OPC) can obtain a sufficient charging voltage at a high humidity of 80% RH, but half of the applied voltage at a humidity of 30 to 50% RH. It is shown that the injection rate is slow. This is presumably because the contact area (nip width) of the charging roller is small and the resistance of the conductive rubber is not sufficiently reduced.
[0010]
In other words, to obtain a low resistance conductive rubber, it is necessary to dope a large amount of charge transfer complex, but as the doping amount increases, the flexibility of the network of the polymer itself decreases (the rubber hardness increases). This is probably because the contact area is small. For example, in JP-A-6-75459, the resistance of conductive rubber is 10 6 It is Ω · cm, and it is considered difficult to reduce the resistance of the conductive rubber while maintaining an appropriate rubber hardness from the viewpoint of selecting a polymer material. In addition, as described above, conductive rubber made of a polymer material that has been imparted with conductivity as a whole is sensitive to humidity because the charging potential is sensitive to humidity, so the environment must be strictly controlled, and the structure of the contact charger is complicated. become.
[0011]
On the other hand, in Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 7-140729, charges are injected into the photoreceptor using a water-absorbing sponge roller. When a water-absorbing sponge roller is used, the water content of the roller has a great influence on the roller resistance and the charge injection speed, so that the charging potential may fluctuate due to the evaporation of moisture from the roller. In order to suppress the fluctuation of the charging potential, it is necessary to strictly control the evaporation of water from the roller over a long period of time. However, this complicates the structure of the contact charger and cannot be manufactured at low cost.
[0012]
Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 9-101649 discloses that the contact area between the conductive fiber and the photosensitive member is increased by using the conductive fiber of the charging brush as an etching fiber or a split fiber, thereby improving the charge injection speed. Has been proposed. The etching fiber is a fiber obtained by dissolving a part of the conductive fiber component in a chemical solution and separating one conductive fiber into a plurality of pieces in the thickness direction. Further, the split fiber is a fiber obtained by splitting one conductive fiber in the thickness direction using a difference in heat shrinkage of each part during heating. By these treatments, conductive fibers having a substantially smaller diameter are used, and the contact area with the photoreceptor can be increased.
[0013]
However, the tensile strength of the separated or divided fibers is lower than the conductive fibers before separation / division by the amount of separation / division. As a result, when it comes into contact with the photoconductor, the fibers are easily cut, and when used for a long period of time, the charged potential varies, causing the life of the contact charger to be shortened. On the other hand, even if you try to obtain a long-life contact charger, you cannot expect a significant increase in contact area because the number of conductive fiber separation / division cannot be increased, and it is difficult to significantly improve the charge injection rate. is there.
[0014]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide a contact charger that solves the above-mentioned problems of the prior art, as well as Its manufacture method Is to provide. That is, in a contact charger that charges a photoconductor by charge injection, since the injection speed is high, a sufficient charging voltage can be applied to the photoconductor, and it is sufficiently resistant to environmental fluctuations such as humidity, and long-term. It is an object of the present invention to provide a contact type charger having a small variation in charging voltage in use.
[0015]
In a contact charger using corona discharge in a minute gap between the photoreceptor and the contact charger, ozone or NO X It is an object of the present invention to provide a contact-type charger that can reduce the generation of the external power supply and realize a low voltage of an external power source.

FIG. 2 is a schematic explanatory view showing a six-membered ring that is obtained by cutting and expanding a single-walled carbon nanotube. The chiral vector Ch of the single-walled carbon tube is described as the following formula (1).
[0039]
[Equation 3]
[0040]
In the above formula (1), a1 and a2 represent basic translation vectors of a two-dimensional hexagonal lattice, and n and m represent integers.
[0041]
The Ch of the single-walled carbon nanotube of FIG. 2 indicates (n, m) = (3, 0). Further, it has been found that the condition for the single-walled carbon nanotube to exhibit metallic conductivity is that the following mathematical formula (2) holds.
[0042]
[Expression 4]
[0043]
In the above mathematical formula (2), n, m, and k represent integers.
[0044]
Therefore, when single-walled carbon nanotubes are used for the charging
[0045]
On the other hand, in the case of multi-walled carbon nanotubes, the interaction between the graphene of each layer is small, so the conductivity of each layer is mixed, and generally shows metallic conductivity, but a structure suitable for the charging brush is uniquely determined. I can't. However, in single-walled carbon nanotubes, only one graphene contributes to electrical conduction, but in multi-walled carbon nanotubes, graphene in each layer contributes to electrical conduction. There is an advantage that charges can be injected into the organic
[0046]
Next, a method for producing a carbon nanotube will be described. Single-walled carbon nanotubes use a composite rod in which graphite is mixed with a metal catalyst such as Fe, Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, Pt, La, and Y as a cathode, and a graphite rod as a cathode. , Pressure 100-700 Torr (1.33 × 10 Four ~ 9.31 × 10 Four Pa) He or H 2 Synthesize by arc discharge in atmosphere. Single-walled carbon nanotubes are present in the cage on the inner wall of the chamber (chamber cage) or in the cage on the cathode surface (cathode cage) depending on the type of metal catalyst.
[0047]
Further, the composite rod was heated to 1000 to 1400 ° C. in an electric furnace, and the pressure was 500 Torr (6.65 × 10 6 Four Single-walled carbon nanotubes may be synthesized by irradiation with Nd: YAG pulsed laser light in an Ar atmosphere of Pa). Since the synthesized single-walled carbon nanotube contains various impurities, it is preferably purified to a purity of 80% or more by a hydrothermal method, a centrifugal separation method, an ultrafiltration method or the like.
[0048]
On the other hand, multi-walled carbon nanotubes use graphite rods for both the anode and cathode, and have a pressure of 100 to 700 Torr (1.33 × 10 6 Four ~ 9.31 × 10 Four Synthesis using arc discharge in He atmosphere of Pa). The multi-walled carbon nanotube exists in the center of the cylindrical deposit on the cathode. Also, hydrocarbons such as benzene, ethylene, acetylene, etc. 2 It can also be obtained by pyrolysis at 1000 to 1500 ° C. under a gas flow. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes also contain various impurities after synthesis, so they should be dispersed in an organic solvent or an aqueous solution to which a surfactant is added, and then purified to high purity by centrifugation or ultrafiltration. . The tip of the carbon nanotube may have a closed tube shape or an open tube shape.

Next, FIG. 3A shows an example of a manufacturing method of the charging

[0052]
In addition, these processes may be performed as a spinning process, or may be performed after spinning, such as polishing and oxygen plasma ashing. The polishing process is a method using loose abrasive grains, specifically, the fibers are sandwiched between pads of cerium oxide, urethane, etc., and 1 to 500 g / cm between the fibers. 2 In the meantime, alumina having a particle diameter of 1 μm is supplied, and the fibers are pulled out from one side and polished. Depending on the fiber winding speed (drawing speed), the pad is used in one stage or a combination of a plurality of stages installed on the diagonal.
[0053]
An example of using carbon nanotubes purified to a high purity when dispersing carbon nanotubes in fibers has been shown, but carbon nanotubes mixed with carbon nanoparticle synthesized by an arc discharge method or the like may be used. As another method, a polymer fiber is substituted by replacing a charge transfer complex composed of an electron accepting compound such as tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) and an electron donating compound such as tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) with a polymer network. You may give electroconductivity to the whole. At the same time, the carbon nanotubes purified to high purity are dispersed and spun. After spinning, the carbon nanotubes are projected from the fiber surface as described above.
[0054]
In any method, the amount of carbon nanotubes dispersed is 0.01 / μm on the surface protrusion density. 2 Desirably, the amount is 1 / μm 2 If the above amount is added, stable charging is possible. In this example, the amount of carbon nanotube dispersion was 2 wt%.

CGL consists of a charge generation material (hereinafter abbreviated as CGM) dispersed in a binder resin such as butyral resin, thermosetting modified acrylic resin, phenol resin, etc., and is formed with a thickness of 0.1-1 μm by dipping coating. did. CGM includes squarylium dye, metal-free phthalocyanine, metal phthalocyanine, azurenium salt dye and azo pigment having a sensitivity in the vicinity of a wavelength of 740 to 780 nm. Perylene or azo pigments can be used.
[0058]
The CTL consists of a carrier transport material for holes (hereinafter abbreviated as CTM) dispersed in a binder resin such as a bisphenol polycarbonate resin, and has a film thickness of about 10 to 40 μm and is formed by a dipping coating method. As the CTM, an oxadiazole derivative, a pyrarizone derivative, a triphenylmethane derivative, an oxazole derivative, a triarylamine derivative, a butadiene derivative, or the like is used.
[0059]
The OPC in this example is an OPC that uses holes among the carriers generated by light. However, CGM that generates electrons and CTM that transports electrons have been developed to some extent. There is no problem even if the OPC is used. In that case, the positive and negative of the DC power supply are reversed and used for positive charging, but the above-mentioned charging brush can be used as it is.
[0060]
In this example, the function separation type OPC is described as an example. However, the present invention is not limited to the function separation type, and may be a single layer type OPC. Although this example is a drum-shaped OPC, a belt having a conductive layer formed on the surface may be adopted instead of the Al base, and a belt-shaped OPC may be used. A sheet-like OPC may also be used. Further, the present invention is not limited to the contact type charger used for OPC, and the same contact type charger can be used even for an inorganic photoreceptor such as Se-based, a-Si, ZnO, etc. Then, the type of the photoreceptor is not limited.
[0061]
Although the present embodiment has been described with respect to a roll-shaped charging brush, the effect of the present invention can be similarly realized even with a fixed brush, and the shape of the charging brush is not limited. In addition, although the charging

A charging brush was produced according to the production method of FIG. The configuration is shown below.
[0063]
The charging brush was connected to a DC power supply of −500 V and charged by contacting with OPC composed of CTL / CGL / hole injection blocking layer / Al base. Since the peripheral speed of OPC is 300 mm / s, the contact time between the charging brush and OPC is 0.051 s. The OPC was charged to −440 V while in contact with the charging brush, and it was confirmed that the charging brush in which the carbon nanotubes were connected to the conductive fibers had sufficient charging ability. Further, the variation in charging voltage in the longitudinal direction of OPC was within 5%, and sufficient uniformity was obtained.

A charging roller was produced according to the above production method. The configuration is shown below.
[0071]
The charging roller was connected to a DC power supply of −500 V, and charged by contacting with OPC composed of CTL / CGL / hole injection blocking layer / Al base. Since the peripheral speed of OPC is 150 mm / s, the contact time between the charging roller and OPC is 0.013 s.
[0072]
The OPC was charged to −370 V while in contact with the charging roller, and it was confirmed that the charging roller in which the carbon nanotubes were connected to the conductive rubber had a sufficient charging ability. Further, the same charging test was performed at a humidity of 30 to 80% RH, but the variation in charging voltage was within 10%, and it was found that the battery had sufficient resistance against environmental fluctuations.

The charging blade shown in FIG. 8A was produced under the following conditions.
[0083]
The charging blade was connected to a DC power source of −500 V and charged by contacting with OPC composed of CTL / CGL / hole injection blocking layer / Al base. Since the peripheral speed of OPC is 200 mm / s, the contact time between the charging blade and OPC is 0.02 s. The OPC was charged to −390 V while in contact with the charging blade, and it was confirmed that the charging blade in which carbon nanotubes were connected to conductive rubber had a sufficient charging ability. In addition, when the friction coefficient between the OPC and the charging blade was measured, compared with a conventional charging blade without carbon nanotubes, above It was confirmed that the friction coefficient of the charging blade was reduced to 1/2 to 1/10 depending on the pressure condition.
[0084]
<Example 3 >
Example 1 2 Each of the contact type chargers manufactured in the above and a DC power supply of −500 V were mounted as a charging system for an electrophotographic copying machine, and a test chart was copied. For development, low-potential development (black and white binary development) was used, and the gradation was expressed by the number of dots. As a reference, a 5 kV power source and a copier mounted as a corotron were used. Since the reference charging voltage was 800 V, low potential development was not performed, and gradation was displayed in analog.
[0085]
Example 1 2 As a result of copying with a copier equipped with a contact type charger, good images were obtained. In particular, when a charging brush is used, more gradations can be displayed than the image obtained with the reference copying machine, and the resolution is improved. The image of the copier equipped with a charging roller and charging blade was slightly deteriorated compared to the image obtained with the charging brush because of low-potential development. It is estimated that an equivalent image can be obtained. Examples 1 to 2 In a copier equipped with a contact-type charger, ozone or NO is charged during the charging process of the photoreceptor. X Was hardly detected.
[0086]
Therefore, a copying machine equipped with the contact-type charger of the present invention is not ozone or NO. X It has been confirmed that good image recording can be performed without generating voltage and reducing the external power supply of the charging system. Further, when a life test was conducted on all copying machines, it was found that good images were obtained over a long period of time, and the long-term reliability of the contact charger was excellent. In addition, the replacement frequency of the contact charger can be reduced. Further, it was hardly observed that the contact chargers scraped the OPC in all the copying machines, and the life of the OPC could be greatly extended compared with the copying machines equipped with the conventional charging roller and charging blade.
[0087]
From the above results, there is a possibility that the total cost of the copying machine can be reduced if the production cost of carbon nanotubes is lowered in the future. Similar effects can be expected in image recording apparatuses such as printers and facsimiles.
[0088]
<Example 4 >
Example 1 2 In this case, charging is mainly performed by charge injection. In general, when a large charging voltage (about 600 V to 1 kV) is required, OPC charging is performed mainly by corona discharge in a minute gap between the photosensitive member and the contact charger. Also in the contact-type charger of the present invention, a discharge start voltage V is generated in a minute gap between the carbon nanotube and the OPC. th When the above voltage is applied, corona discharge is generated in the minute gap between the carbon nanotube and the OPC, and the OPC is charged. In particular, since carbon nanotubes have an extremely fine needle shape, an unequal electric field at the tip of the carbon nanotube becomes strong, and V th Can be lowered.
[0089]
In the charging roller in contact with the carbon nanotube of Example 2, V th The V of a charging roller without carbon nanotubes was measured. th It was confirmed that it was lower than. Therefore, when the OPC is charged using corona discharge at the tip of the carbon nanotube, the applied voltage can be lowered as compared with conventional roller charging (discharge method using corona discharge using a charging roller). In addition, ozone and NO generated when OPC is charged by corona discharge in a minute gap X As a result of measurement, the charging roller connected with the carbon nanotube is more ozone and NO than the conventional charging roller without the carbon nanotube. X There were few. This is because corona discharge occurs only at the tips of the carbon nanotubes, so the discharge space is small and the applied voltage is small in the charging roller to which the carbon nanotubes are connected. X This is thought to be due to the suppression of occurrence.
[0090]
Therefore, even when charging the OPC by corona discharge, the charging roller in which the carbon nanotube is connected to the tip of the rubbing charging member is charged with ozone or NO. X There is an advantage that it is possible to realize a reduction in voltage and a reduction in the voltage of the external power supply. In this example, the description has been made using the charging roller. However, the charging brush and the charging blade have the same effect.
[0091]
As described above, the present invention is not limited to a charging method such as charge injection, field emission, or corona discharge in a minute gap, and refers to all contact chargers including the structure of the present invention. In the embodiments, the shapes of the charging brush, charging roller, and charging blade have been described. However, the present invention is not limited to the shapes of the embodiments, and in the present invention, a carbon nanotube is connected to the tip of the charging member. All contact chargers are included.
[0092]
【The invention's effect】
[0093]
[0094]
[0095]
On the other hand, when the photoconductor is charged by corona discharge in the minute gap between the photosensitive layer and the contact charger, the unequal electric field at the tip of the carbon nanotube is strong because the carbon nanotube has an extremely fine needle shape. Thus, the discharge start voltage can be lowered. Therefore, compared with the conventional roller charging, the applied voltage can be reduced and the corona discharge space can be reduced. As a result, ozone and NO generated in the discharge space X The amount of can be reduced.
[0096]
In addition, since carbon nanotubes have high tensile strength in the axial direction, even if they are extremely thin, they are very unlikely to break when in contact with the photosensitive layer, and are uniformly dispersed and held even inside the support (inside the conductive member). It has improved resistance to destruction and omission due to local force due to mixing of toner particles, paper powder, etc., and there is very little variation in charging voltage in the long term. Life expectancy can be realized. In addition, even when the support is worn, carbon nanotubes inside protrude from the surface, maintain initial characteristics, and enable stable charging.
[0097]
[0098]
Claim 5 In the contact-type charger, since the carbon nanotube is a multi-walled carbon nanotube, it has a substantially metallic conductivity, and the graphene of each layer constituting the multi-walled carbon nanotube contributes to the electric conduction, so that a larger amount of charge is generated. Can be injected into the photosensitive layer.
[0099]
[0102]
Claim 6 In the method for manufacturing a contact charger described in 1), a support (conductive member) in which carbon nanotubes are dispersed is mechanically polished using abrasive fine particles such as alumina, and the carbon nanotubes are projected from the surface of the support. For this reason, the
