【0001】

<作用>
【0031】

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
In the present invention, the signal electrode on the upper substrate and the counter electrode on the lower substrate are bonded to each other with a predetermined gap, liquid crystal is sealed, and a predetermined signal is applied to each electrode to display using the optical change of the liquid crystal. When the external environment where the liquid crystal display device is used is bright, use it as a reflective liquid crystal display device with a reflective plate or transflective plate, and use it as a transmissive type when the external environment is dark The present invention relates to a transflective (semi-reflective) liquid crystal display device.
[0002]
[Prior art]
In recent years, the display capacity of a liquid crystal display device using a liquid crystal panel has been increasing. The structure of the liquid crystal display device includes a passive matrix type in which a display electrode of a liquid crystal pixel is directly connected to a signal electrode provided on an upper substrate, and an active matrix type in which a switching element is provided between the signal electrode and the display electrode. Furthermore, a counter electrode is provided via a liquid crystal so as to face the display electrode on the upper substrate, a plurality of signal electrodes and a plurality of counter electrodes are arranged in a matrix, and the signal electrode and the data electrode connected to the counter electrode are provided. It has a structure in which a predetermined signal is applied from an external circuit.
[0003]
In a simple matrix (passive matrix type) liquid crystal display device that uses multiplex drive, the contrast decreases or the response speed decreases as the time is increased, and in the case of having about 200 scanning lines. It becomes difficult to obtain sufficient contrast.
[0004]
Therefore, in order to eliminate such defects, an active matrix liquid crystal display panel in which a switching element is provided for each pixel is employed.
[0005]
The active matrix liquid crystal display panel is roughly classified into a three-terminal switching element using a thin film transistor and a two-terminal switching element using a non-linear resistance element. Among these, the two-terminal switching element is excellent in that the structure and the manufacturing method are simple and that it can be relatively manufactured in a low-temperature process.
[0006]
As this two-terminal switching element, a diode type, a varistor type, a TFD type, and the like have been developed.
[0007]
Of these, the TFD type is particularly simple in structure and has a short manufacturing process.
[0008]
Further, since the liquid crystal display device is not a self-luminous display device, display is performed using an external light source and an external light change due to an optical change of the liquid crystal. Therefore, there are roughly two types of positional relationships among the observer, the liquid crystal display device, and the light source. The first is a so-called reflective liquid crystal display device in which the external light source (main light source) and the observer are on the same plane with respect to the liquid crystal display device. The second is the arrangement of the observer-liquid crystal display device-light source unit. This is a so-called transmissive liquid crystal display device. For the purpose of reducing power consumption, which is an advantage of the liquid crystal display device, a reflective liquid crystal display device that uses an external light source around the liquid crystal display device without using a light source is particularly effective.
[0009]
Further, when the usage environment of the liquid crystal display device is bright, the reflective liquid crystal display device uses an external light source. When the usage environment is dark, the light source unit included in the liquid crystal display device is turned on to transmit the transmissive liquid crystal There is a transflective liquid crystal display device used as a display device. Since the transflective liquid crystal display device is basically used as a reflective liquid crystal display device, power consumption can be reduced as compared with the transmissive liquid crystal display device. Therefore, a reflective liquid crystal display device or a transflective liquid crystal display device is a display mode that is extremely important for application to portable information equipment.
[0010]
A conventional example of a transflective liquid crystal display device having a two-terminal switching element as a switching element between a signal electrode and a display electrode will be described below with reference to the drawings.
[0011]
FIG. 13 is a plan view showing a configuration of a transflective liquid crystal display device in the prior art using a two-terminal switching element. Further, FIG. 14 is a cross-sectional view showing a cross section taken along line AA in the plan view of FIG. Hereinafter, the prior art will be described using FIG. 13 and FIG. 14 alternately.

[0017]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
Here, in the conventional liquid crystal display device, the contrast ratio is good, but there is no brightness, particularly whiteness, and the display performance is not sufficient. This is largely due to coloring that occurs because the transmittance of the polarizing plate is not uniform in the visible light region. Further, in the case of having a color filter, the brightness is further reduced.
[0018]
Furthermore, when the unevenness is provided on the reflection plate, it is necessary to control the surface shape and improve the reflectivity, so that the formation of the reflection plate becomes complicated. Furthermore, in the white diffuser plate having a specific polarization, the alignment of the diffusion direction having the directivity due to the surface shape and the polarization direction occurs, and it is necessary to prepare a diffusion plate depending on the polarization direction of the liquid crystal display device, The versatility is worse.
[0019]
Further, in the case of a reflection type deflection plate having a reflection polarization axis, one optical axis is a transmission polarization axis, and in the case of a reflection type deflection plate having a reflection polarization axis, a diffusion plate is provided between the lower substrate and the reflection type deflection plate. However, the same drive is required when an absorption layer is required on the lower side of the reflective deflection plate, when an external light source is used, and when the light source section below the reflective deflection plate is used. When the external light source is used, the white display portion when the external light source is used, and when the light source portion is used, the light / dark reversal of the image that becomes the black display portion occurs.
[0020]
An object of the present invention is to provide a structure for solving the above-described problems and achieving a bright and white transflective liquid crystal display device.
[0021]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to achieve the above object, the liquid crystal display device of the present invention employs the following configuration.
[0022]
The liquid crystal display device of the present invention has at least a signal electrode on an upper substrate and at least a counter electrode on a lower substrate, the upper substrate and the lower substrate are opposed to each other at a predetermined interval, The counter electrode and each other face each otherConstitute.
[0023]
The liquid crystal is sealed between the upper substrate and the lower substrate, the upper substrate is disposed on the viewer side, the polarizing plate is disposed above the upper substrate, and the light source unit is disposed below the lower substrate. And a diffusion plate between the lower substrate and the light source,A reflection plate for performing reflective display is provided outside the light source unit, the light source unit has a cold cathode tube, and the reflection plate is arranged facing the cold cathode tube.It is characterized by that.
[0024]
The liquid crystal display device of the present invention has at least a signal electrode on an upper substrate and at least a counter electrode on a lower substrate, the upper substrate and the lower substrate are opposed to each other at a predetermined interval, The counter electrode is opposed to each other to form a pixel portion, and includes a liquid crystal sealed between the upper substrate and the lower substrate, the upper substrate is disposed on the viewer side, and a polarizing plate is disposed above the upper substrate. And a diffusion plate that scatters straight light, a polarizing plate, and a light source unit. The light source unit includes at least a fluorescent tube and a reflection plate.
[0025]
The light source unit is characterized by having transparency.
[0026]
The light source section has no optical anisotropy.
[0027]
An upper polarizing plate and a lower polarizing plate are respectively provided on the outer sides of the upper substrate and the lower substrate, and a light source unit and a reflecting plate are disposed below the lower polarizing plate.
[0028]
The diffusing plate is disposed with a gap from the lower substrate. Further, the diffusion plate has no optical anisotropy.
[0029]
The liquid crystal display device of the present invention is characterized by having a lens film that limits the viewing angle between the polarizing plate and the light source unit or between the transflective plate and the light source unit.
[0030]
The liquid crystal display device of the present invention is characterized in that the diffusion plate has substantially the same transmittance in visible light.
<Action>
[0031]
A diffusion plate, a polarizing plate, a transflective plate, and a light source unit are disposed below the lower substrate constituting the liquid crystal display device. As described above, the color of the reflection plate can be converted by the scattering property and color of the diffusion plate. That is, the light from the upper substrate side is partially scattered and reflected by the diffusion plate and is emitted to the observer side on the upper substrate side. Furthermore, the light that has passed through the diffusion plate and the polarizing plate is reflected by the reflection plate, scattered again by the diffusion plate, corrects the coloring of the polarizing plate, and is emitted to the viewer side. In particular, the color of the polarizing plate is corrected to white by using a white diffusion plate having substantially the same transmission characteristics and scattering characteristics in the visible light region as the diffusion plate.
[0032]
In addition, by providing reflection characteristics on the front surface or the back surface of the light source unit provided below the transflective plate, the light transmitted through the transflective plate can be effectively emitted to the viewer side. Furthermore, by providing a light source part composed of a transparent conductive film, a light emitting layer, and a reflective electrode on the back surface of the diffusion plate and the polarizing plate, reflection characteristics when using an external light source and light emission of the light emitting layer, that is, the light source part The brightness at the time of lighting can be improved.
[0033]
In addition, an external light source is used by guiding light to the back surface of the diffusion plate through the light guide plate without providing a light emitting portion directly below the lower substrate, and further providing a reflection plate below the light guide plate. In this case, it is possible to ensure good reflection characteristics and brightness by the diffusion plate, the polarizing plate, the light guide plate, and the reflection plate. Further, when the light emitting unit is turned on, bright display is possible by the light guide plate, the reflection plate, and the diffusion plate. In addition, since the scattering property of the light guide plate can be sufficiently achieved by the diffusion plate as compared with the conventional case, the transmittance and the uniformity of the light guide can be improved.

By adopting a scattering-type liquid crystal layer for the diffuser, it is easy to change the degree of scattering, and by allowing voltage to be applied to the scattering-type liquid crystal layer, white light can be emitted by the external environment or lighting of the auxiliary light source. The scattering degree of the diffusing plate can be varied, and a bright display with good visibility becomes possible.
