Description
【0001】

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an optical head device for recording / reproducing information on an optical recording medium such as an optical disk or a magneto-optical disk.
[0002]
[Prior art]
A DVD, which is an optical disk, records digital information at a higher density than a CD, which is also an optical disk, and an optical head device for reproducing a DVD has a light source wavelength of 660 nm, which is shorter than the 780 nm of the CD, The numerical aperture (NA) of the lens is set to 0.6 to 0.65, which is larger than 0.45 of CD, so that the spot diameter focused on the optical disk surface is reduced.
[0003]
However, due to the shortening of the wavelength of the light source and the increase of the NA of the objective lens, the allowable amount of disc tilt in which the optical disc surface tilts from the right angle with respect to the optical axis becomes small.
[0004]
The reason why the allowable amount of disc tilt is reduced is that coma aberration occurs when the disc tilt occurs, so that the condensing characteristic of the optical head device is deteriorated and it becomes difficult to read the signal. In high-density recording, several methods have been proposed in order to increase the allowable amount of the optical head device with respect to the disk tilt.
[0005]
As one method, there is a method in which an axis for tilting is added to the actuator of the objective lens moving in the biaxial direction so that the objective lens is tilted according to the detected tilt angle. However, this additional method has problems such as a complicated actuator structure.
[0006]
As another method, there is a method of correcting coma aberration by a phase correction element provided between the objective lens and the light source. In this correction method, the allowable amount of disk tilt can be increased by simply incorporating an element into the optical head device without significantly modifying the actuator.
[0007]
For example, Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 10-20263 discloses the above correction method for correcting a disc tilt using a phase correction element. This is because the voltage is applied to the divided electrodes formed by dividing the electrodes on each of the pair of substrates sandwiching the birefringent material such as liquid crystal constituting the phase correction element, and the birefringence is achieved. In this method, the substantial refractive index of the material is changed in accordance with the tilt angle of the optical disk, and the coma aberration generated by the tilt of the optical disk is corrected by the change of the phase (wavefront) of the transmitted light generated by the change of the refractive index. . Therefore, it is necessary that the phase difference distribution generated by the phase correction element and the wavefront aberration distribution to be corrected substantially coincide.
[0008]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, there is a lens shift that is a positional shift between the optical axis of the phase correction element and the optical axis of the objective lens, such as a positional shift that occurs when the phase correction element is incorporated in the optical head device or an objective lens movement during tracking servo. When this occurs, the phase difference distribution of the phase correction element deviates from the wavefront aberration distribution to be corrected, so that the wavefront aberration correction function is lowered and the signal characteristics are deteriorated.
[0009]
In particular, when lens shift occurs in coma aberration correction, astigmatism occurs and signal quality deteriorates greatly. In recent years, the density of information recording has been increasing, and the generation of astigmatism due to this lens shift has become a problem, and means for solving this has been demanded.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
FIG. 2 shows an example of the principle configuration of the optical head device according to the present invention. The optical head device shown in FIG. 2 is for recording and reproducing information on an optical disk 8 such as a CD or a DVD. Light emitted from a
[0014]
The condensed light is reflected by the optical disk 8 and sequentially passes through the objective lens 6, the rising mirror 11, the quarter-wave plate 5, the phase correction element 4, and the collimating lens 3 in the reverse order, and then the polarization beam splitter. 2 is diffracted by 2 and enters the photodetector 9. When the light emitted from the

The polarization beam splitter 2 includes, for example, a polarization hologram, and strongly diffracts light having a polarization component in the anisotropic direction (direction in which there is a difference in refractive index) and guides it to the photodetector 9. A voltage is output to the phase correction element 4 by the phase correction

The configuration necessary for the function of changing the wavefront using the phase correction element has been described above. However, the function of the wavelength plate 5 and the polarization beam splitter 2 is obtained by laminating the wave plate and the polarization hologram on the phase correction element 4. Can be included in the phase correction element 4 together. In this case, the number of optical components constituting the optical head device is reduced, which facilitates assembly and adjustment, and is preferable because productivity is improved.
[0021]
In addition, the phase correction element 4 can be laminated with a dichroic aperture limiting layer or the like for changing the beam diameter according to the wavelength of the diffraction grating or the light source, and can be directly formed on the outer surface of the
[0022]
Next, a method for correcting wavefront aberration using the phase correction element of the present invention will be described. FIG. 4 shows a coma aberration distribution that occurs when the disc tilt angle is 1 °. The light source wavelength is 660 nm, the objective lens NA is 0.65, and the optical disc thickness is 0.6 mm. The coma aberration is expressed for each size in units of the wavelength λ.

Next, as an example, a case will be described in which a lens shift caused by an assembly error that occurs when a phase correction element is incorporated in an optical head device is described. In this case, with the lens shift amount ε using a method such as image measurement after assembly, the value in the phase correction element control circuit by means such as increasing or decreasing the variable resistance value of the drive circuit if example embodiment of this beta, the ε To reflect. Accordingly, it is possible to perform disc tilt correction while automatically correcting the influence of the lens shift following the occurrence of coma aberration correction.

Similarly, in the example of correcting the influence of the lens shift ε due to the tracking servo, the tracking servo signal corresponding to the lens shift may be dynamically fed back to the equation (1) and ΔV S may be changed each time. .

The number of electrodes, the electrode shape, the number of applied voltages, etc. of the electrode pattern shown in FIG. 1 may be selected so as to be optimal for conditions such as coma aberration correction performance and phase correction element control circuit manufacturing costs. For example, in order to improve the coma aberration correction performance, the coma

FIG. 7 is a graph showing the relationship between the wavefront aberration (residual aberration value) and the disc tilt obtained by the phase correction element of the present invention. The solid line (A) in the figure shows the case where lens shift correction is performed with βε = 0.6. On the other hand, the broken line (B) shows a case where the lens shift correction is not performed with βε = 0 for comparison. Although the total wavefront aberration did not change with or without lens shift correction, those with lens shift correction were able to greatly reduce astigmatism, resulting in a significant improvement in optical disc signal quality. .

【The invention's effect】
As described above, in the optical head device of the present invention, even when a lens shift occurs by forming a lens shift correction electrode on the same substrate as a transparent substrate on which a plurality of coma aberration correction electrodes are formed. Since the occurrence of astigmatism can be suppressed, the disc tilt tolerance can be increased.
