Description
【0001】
【0044】
発光機能を備える微小タイル状素子21,21’は、例えば、LED、VCSEL(面発光レーザ)又は電界吸収変調器内蔵のDFB(Distributed Feedback)レーザを備えるものとする。

[0002]
[Prior art]
In recent years, as a flat display device, an electroluminescence panel (ELP), a plasma display panel (PDP), a liquid crystal display device (LCD), and the like are used. In these flat display devices, a technique for using light for signal transmission has been studied in order to eliminate signal delays associated with an increase in size and capacity (for example, see Patent Document 1).

[Patent Document 1]
Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 5-100246
[0004]
In addition, the operation speed (operation clock) inside the CPU is increasing year by year due to the miniaturization of the internal structure of the integrated circuit. However, the signal transmission speed in the bus connecting the CPU and peripheral devices such as a storage device is almost reaching its limit, which is a bottleneck in computer processing speed. If signal transmission on this bus can be performed using optical signals, the limit of the processing speed of the computer can be significantly increased.
[0005]
In order to transmit data using an optical signal, an optical transmission unit that transmits the optical signal emitted from the light source to a predetermined location and inputs it to a light receiving element or the like is required. Conventionally, as such an optical transmission means, there is a technique using an optical fiber or a technique using an optical waveguide formed on a substrate.
[0006]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, when an optical fiber is used as an optical transmission means, connection with optical components such as a light emitting element and a light receiving element becomes complicated, and it takes a lot of cost and time to manufacture, and it is difficult to reduce the size of the optical transmission means. There is a problem of becoming.
[0007]
On the other hand, it is conceivable to simplify the connection between the light transmission medium, the light emitting element, the light receiving element and the like by using an optical waveguide formed on the substrate. However, at present, an input / output structure suitable for this optical waveguide has not yet been found, and an optical transmission means that has been miniaturized and easily manufactured so as to be applicable to a flat display device or a computer has been realized. Absent.
[0008]
The present invention has been made in view of the above circumstances. An optical interconnection circuit, an electro-optical device, and an optical interconnection circuit that can increase the signal transmission speed and can be easily miniaturized, and can be easily manufactured. The purpose is to provide electronic equipment.
[0009]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to achieve the above-described object, an optical interconnection circuit of the present invention is provided on a substrate, a first element and a second element provided on the substrate and having a light emitting unit having a light emitting function, and the substrate. And a third element and a fourth element having a light receiving part having a light receiving function, and an optical waveguide material that optically connects the first element, the second element, the third element, and the fourth element. And the first element and the second element have a light emitting function of emitting light having different wavelengths, and the optical waveguide material includes at least the first element and the optical element. Since the light emitting portion of each of the second elements and the light receiving portion of each of the third element and the fourth element are covered, the light emitted from the first element is The third element through the optical waveguide And the second element is configured such that light emitted from the second element is incident on the third element and the fourth element via the optical waveguide, and the third element. Has a light receiving wavelength selecting function for selectively receiving light having a wavelength emitted by the first element, and the fourth element is a light receiving wavelength selecting function for selectively receiving light having a wavelength emitted by the second element. It is characterized by having.
According to the present invention, there are two types of elements: a first element having a light emitting function (hereinafter also referred to as a micro tile element) and a second element (hereinafter also referred to as a micro tile element). Light having different wavelengths (for example, light having the first wavelength and light having the second wavelength) is emitted to the optical waveguide. The light of the first wavelength propagates through the optical waveguide and is received by the third element (hereinafter also referred to as a light receiving element), and the light of the second wavelength propagates through the optical waveguide and passes through the fourth element ( Hereinafter, it may be referred to as a light receiving element). Therefore, according to the present invention, at least two types of optical signals can be transmitted / received simultaneously in one optical light guide, and signals are transmitted / received at a transmission speed that is at least twice as high as when transmitted / received by one type of optical signal. be able to. In other words, a bus using an optical signal can be formed using one optical light guide. Therefore, according to the present invention, it is possible to reduce the number of installed light guides, the installation area, and the like, compared with the case where one type of optical signal is transmitted and received in one light guide, and a compact optical interconnection circuit is provided. be able to.
[0010]

According to the present invention, the light receiving element can select and receive one of at least two types of light having different wavelengths propagating through the optical waveguide (for example, light having the first wavelength and light having the second wavelength). it can. Therefore, for example, the first light receiving element can selectively receive light having the first wavelength, and the second light receiving element can selectively receive light having the second wavelength. Therefore, according to the present invention, an optical signal is simultaneously transmitted between two or more micro tile elements having a light emitting function and two or more micro tile elements having a light receiving function via one light guide. You can send and receive. Further, according to the present invention, the signal transmission speed is extremely high by making the micro tile-like element into a very small shape (for example, having an area of several hundred μm square or less and a thickness of several tens of μm or less). However, it is possible to provide an optical interconnection circuit that is very compact and can be easily manufactured.

[0028]
In the optical interconnection circuit of the present invention, it is preferable that the light reflecting mechanism is a plate-like member provided with a grating, and is provided at least in a portion facing the micro tile element or the light receiving element. .
According to the present invention, for example, an optical signal radiated from a micro tile element in a direction perpendicular to the substrate plane can be reflected by a plate-like member provided with a grating and propagated in a direction along the optical waveguide. it can. Further, the optical signal propagating in the optical waveguide can be reflected by the plate-like member provided with the grating and directed toward the light receiving portion of the light receiving element, and the optical coupling efficiency can be easily improved.
[0029]
In the optical interconnection circuit of the present invention, the thickness of the micro tile element is preferably 20 μm or less.
According to the present invention, for example, when a plurality of micro tile elements are arranged in the middle of an optical waveguide on the substrate surface, the thickness of the micro tile elements is set to 20 μm or less, whereby The step formed by the element can be made sufficiently small, and the optical waveguide can be continuously formed over the step. Even if the optical waveguide is continuously formed in such a step portion, since the step is small, transmission loss of light such as scattering can be almost ignored. Therefore, according to the present invention, it is possible to provide an optical interconnection circuit that can be easily manufactured at low cost without requiring a special structure and optical element for reducing the step at the step portion.
[0030]
In the optical interconnection circuit of the present invention, it is preferable that the micro tile element having the light emitting function has one configuration of a surface emitting laser, an LED, and a DFB laser.
According to the present invention, a micro tile element having a light emitting function can be provided by cutting a surface emitting laser, an LED, or a DFB laser formed on a certain substrate into a micro tile shape. Here, since the surface emitting laser is made of a compound semiconductor, it is very difficult to form on a silicon integrated circuit directly by a semiconductor process such as epitaxy without lattice matching with silicon. Therefore, a surface emitting laser is once formed on a gallium / arsenic substrate, and then the surface emitting laser is chipped into a micro tile shape to provide a micro tile element having a light emitting function. By forming a chip in this way, a surface emitting laser can be arranged at an arbitrary position on a substrate such as silicon.
In addition, according to the present invention, by using the DFB laser as a micro tile element having a light emitting function, the transmission efficiency of the optical signal can be further increased, and the necessity of the light scattering mechanism and the light reflecting mechanism is reduced. can do. The reason is that, unlike the surface emitting laser and the LED, the DFB laser emits laser light in a direction parallel to the substrate plane from the end (side surface) of the micro tile shape.
[0031]
In the optical interconnection circuit of the present invention, it is preferable that the micro tile-shaped element forming the light receiving element has a configuration of a photodiode or a phototransistor.
According to the present invention, it is possible to configure a micro tile-like element that is a compact and highly sensitive light receiving element.
[0032]
The electro-optical device according to the present invention includes the optical interconnection circuit.
According to the present invention, for example, a scanning signal of a flat display or the like is transmitted by the optical interconnection circuit, so that the scanning signal can be transmitted at a high speed. Further downsizing can be realized.
[0033]
An electronic apparatus according to the present invention includes the optical interconnection circuit.
According to the present invention, for example, by applying the optical interconnection circuit of the present invention to an integrated circuit, a high-speed signal processing and a compact electronic device can be provided at low cost.
Further, according to the present invention, for example, by applying an optical interconnection circuit to a display device, an electronic device that can display a high-quality image can be provided at low cost.
