本発明は、基板に電子部品を熱圧着する熱圧着装置に関する。

【従来の技術】
電子部品を基板に熱圧着する熱圧着装置の一つとして、液晶ディスプレイパネルに代表されるフラットパネルディスプレイを製造する過程で、セルと称されるガラス基板に異方性導電膜(ACF:Anisotropic Conductive Film)を介して電子部品を圧着する熱圧着装置が知られている。なお、電子部品としては、いわゆるTAB(Tape Automated Bonding)部品が一般に使用される。

以下にこの熱圧着装置について、図14を用いて説明する。図14は従来の熱圧着装置を示す一部切り欠き断面側面図である。

図に示す熱圧着装置によれば、まず、受け台3上に不図示のステージに保持されたガラス製の基板2の縁部が載置され支持される。この基板2の縁部に形成された電極面には、複数個の電子部品1が、異方性導電膜4を介して予め仮圧着されている。

この受け台3の上方には、シリンダ機構5により上下(矢印Z)方向に昇降自在な熱圧着ヘッド50が設けられ、この熱圧着ヘッド50がシリンダ機構5によって下降させられることにより、その下端部に設けられたツール本体9の熱圧着部9aが電子部品1に当接されて、基板2に電子部品1が熱圧着される。ここで、熱圧着ヘッド50は、シリンダ機構5に取り付けられた基準ブロック6と、この基準ブロック6に複数のボルト7で取り付けられ、ヒータ8aを内蔵したヒータブロック8と、このヒータブロック8に取り付けられたツール本体9とを有してなり、ヒータブロック8とツール本体9とで熱圧着ツールを構成する。

そして、ツール本体9はヒータ8aにより熱圧着に必要な温度、例えば200〜500℃程度に加熱される。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
ところで、上記のような熱圧着ヘッド50によれば、電子部品1を圧着するツール本体9の熱圧着部9aの温度を、熱圧着に必要な温度、例えば200℃に設定するためには、このツール本体9を加熱するヒータ8aの温度は熱圧着部9aの設定温度よりも200℃程度高い温度に設定する必要がある。これは、ヒータ8aからの熱エネルギーがヒータブロック8やツール本体9の表面から熱放射によって放出されるためである。このように、上記の熱圧着ヘッド50は、ヒータ8aからツール本体9の熱圧着部9aへの熱伝達の効率が悪く、多くの電力を消費してしまうため改善が望まれていた。

そこで、本発明は、ヒータから熱圧着部への熱伝達効率を高め、電力の消費量を低減させることができる熱圧着装置を提供することを目的とする。

【課題を解決するための手段】
本発明は、基板を支持する受け台と、この受け台に対向して位置する熱圧着部を有し前記受け台に支持された基板に電子部品を圧着する熱圧着ツールと、前記熱圧着ツールを加熱するヒータと、を具備する熱圧着装置において、前記熱圧着ツールの表面における一部または全部を覆うように配置された断熱部材を有し、前記断熱部材は、前記熱圧着ツールの表面との間に隙間を設けて配置されたことを特徴とする。

【発明の実施の形態】
以下、本発明の第1の実施の形態(参考の形態)を、図1乃至図3を用いて説明する。図1は本発明に係る熱圧着装置の一実施の形態を示す一部切り欠き断面側面図、図2は図1に示す熱圧着ヘッドの正面図、図3は図2のB−B線矢視断面側面図である。なお、図1乃至図3において、図14に示した従来の構成と同一構成には同一符号を付して、その詳細な説明は省略する。

図において、熱圧着ヘッド50は、シリンダ機構5に取り付けられた基準ブロック6と、この基準ブロック6に複数のボルト7で取り付けられヒータ8aを内蔵したヒータブロック8と、このヒータブロック8に取り付けられたツール本体9と、ヒータブロック8およびツール本体9の表面を覆うように配置された断熱部材16からなる。ここで、ヒータブロック8とツール本体9とで熱圧着ツールを構成する。

この断熱部材16は、ヒータブロック8とツール本体9の表面における電子部品1と当接する熱圧着部9aを除いた一部分(熱圧着装置における基板2が配置される側)を覆うように、全面で接触させて、不図示のネジにて取り付けられる。

ここで断熱部材16は、ヒータブロック8およびツール本体9よりも熱伝導率が低い値のものとし、特に熱不良導体が好ましい。たとえば、熱不良導体の例としてマイカ−ガラス結合体が考えられるが、マイカ−ガラス結合体はその熱伝導率が一般に1.42W/m・K程度と言われており、ヒータブロック8やツール本体9の材料として一般的な鉄の熱伝導率:約75W/m・Kに比べて極めて小さく、断熱部材16として好適である。

このように、ヒータブロック8とツール本体9(熱圧着ツール)の表面における熱圧着部9aを除いた一部分に、熱圧着ツールの熱伝導率よりも小さい熱伝導率を有する断熱部材16を配置することにより、この断熱部材16によって覆われた熱圧着ツールの表面からは熱が放出され難くなり、熱圧着ツールからの熱の放出を低減させることができ、ヒータ8aから熱圧着部9aへの熱伝達効率を向上させることができる。したがって、ツール本体9の熱圧着部9aの温度を予定された温度に保つためのヒータ8aの設定温度を従来に比べ低く設定することができ、この結果、電力の消費量を低減させることができる。

たとえば、上述のマイカ−ガラス結合体を選定した場合、熱圧着部9aの温度を200℃に加熱するためのヒータ8aの設定温度を従来に比べ20〜25℃低下させることができた。

また、上述により、ヒータ8aの設定温度を低下させることができることから、熱圧着ツールから周囲へ放出される熱の温度を低下させる効果を有する。しかも、断熱部材16が配置された熱圧着ツールの基板2側では、熱圧着ツールの熱が断熱部材16の外側に伝わり難く、基板2側に放出される熱の温度をより一層低減させることができる。この結果、電子部品1を基板2に熱圧着する際に、基板2の表面に設けられた偏向板や基板2に封入された液晶が必要以上に加熱されることが防止でき、これらが熱の影響を受けて変質や変形を起こすなどの熱的影響を低減させることができる効果を有する。

次に、第2の実施の形態(参考の形態)について図4および図5を用いて説明する。図4は本発明に係る熱圧着装置に用いられる熱圧着ヘッドの第2の実施の形態を示す正面図、図5は図4のC−C線矢視断面側面図である。
