BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention provides single photon detection required in the fields of optical communication and information processing (quantum cryptography, etc.) that require single photon detection, optical applied measurement fields that require extremely weak light detection, such as laser lidar, etc. More particularly, the present invention relates to a single photon detection device and an afterpulse removal method thereof.
[0002]
[Prior art]
The after pulse is a remarkable noise in a single photon detector using an avalanche photodiode as a light receiving element, and causes a malfunction of output detection. Afterpulses have a high probability of occurring immediately after photon detection, and the probability of occurrence decreases with time. The after pulse is generated immediately after photon detection and gradually decreases with time.In the meantime, the single photon detector detects the after pulse by mistake at the time when there is no photon, and records it as the photon detection time. End up.
[0003]
For simplicity, consider a case where a photon pulse train enters a photon detector via a communication path (such as an optical fiber). When the single photon detector is operated at a preset scheduled detection time, the single photon detector detects all photons when the channel is transparent and the quantum efficiency of the single photon detector is 1. . Therefore, the scheduled detection time matches the detection time.
However, in general, there is a loss in the communication path, and in this case, the photon may be lost and disappear before entering the single photon detector. Furthermore, it is very difficult to set the quantum efficiency to 1 at the current technical level, and even when a photon is incident, the single photon detector often does not record the detection time.
[0004]
Consider a case where two photons are detected for twelve pulse trains in FIG. 1, assuming that the scheduled detection time is Ti, i = 1, 2, 3,. However, which pulse contains a photon is probabilistic, and the detection time of two photons cannot be accurately predicted before detection.
FIG. 1A shows the scheduled detection time, and T0 to T12 of a predetermined cycle are the scheduled detection time. In FIG. 1A, as an example, T3 and T9 are set as detection times. A black circle represents a photon.
[0005]
The detection is ideally performed at the timing when the photon enters the single photon detector, that is, at detection times T3 and T9 shown in FIG.
However, the after-pulse occurrence probability is highest immediately after photon detection. As shown in FIG. 1C, when the after-pulse occurs at the timings T4 and T11 after the scheduled detection times T3 and T9, the single-photon detector Incorrect detection may eventually result in malfunction. For this reason, the single photon detector inherently erroneously records the time when no photon is present as the detection time due to the generation of the after pulse, thus preventing the generation of the after pulse or removing the generated after pulse. Thus, a method for correcting the detection time is required.
[0006]
Academic papers showing conventional techniques Applied Optics Volume 35, Number 12, p. In 1956 (issue year 1996), as shown in FIG. 2A, after the photon detection, the single photon detector is paused for a preset time (pause time), and the frequency of afterpulses is sufficiently low. The generation of after-pulses was prevented by restarting the operation from the point of time. Here, both the “pause time” and the “reference value” used in the present invention are amounts corresponding to “the time when generation of afterpulses can be ignored”, but in the present invention, a single photon detector is used. Since there is no pause, “reference value” was used instead of “pause time”.
[0007]
The after-pulse removal method proposed in the present invention to be described later is a “method for removing the generated after pulse”, and “a method for preventing the generation of the after-pulse” (detection for a predetermined time as in the conventional electronic circuit). This is not a technique that is not performed. Further, the present invention is directed to a calculation algorithm for removal, and is fundamentally different from a technique for preventing after-pulse generation in an electronic circuit.
[0008]
[Problems to be solved by the present invention]
FIG. 3 shows an example of an electronic circuit that realizes a pause / resumption of a conventional single photon detector. However, since the adjustment of the pause time is performed by electronic components such as a delay line in the time constant circuits Rs1 and Rs2, it is difficult to readjust once it is set. Also, the pause time cannot be set shorter than the inherent signal delay time of the electronic circuit.
On the other hand, since the time dependency of the after-pulse generation probability greatly depends on the operating temperature and operating voltage of the avalanche photodiode as the light receiving element, it is desirable that the pause time can be adjusted at all times.
[0009]
Furthermore, since avalanche photodiodes have slightly different characteristics between elements, it is necessary to optimize the capacitance and resistance value of the capacitor in FIG. 3 for each element. It is complicated.
An object of the present invention is to provide a single photon detector capable of easily and easily changing a setting of a reference value corresponding to a pause time and removing a generated after pulse in view of the problems of the conventional example and the after pulse thereof. It is to provide a removal method.
[0010]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
(1) In the afterpulse removal method, the step of detecting photons by a single photon detection means using an avalanche photodiode as a light receiving element, and the control means store detection times at arbitrary time intervals that can record all photons and afterpulses. And a step of judging that only a detection time longer than a reference value for which the time difference from the immediately preceding photon detection time is arbitrarily adjusted according to the operating conditions and element characteristics of the single photon detection means is valid. And
(2) In the afterpulse elimination method according to (1), the control unit includes a step of setting a scheduled detection time in advance and setting the single photon detector to operate only at the scheduled detection time. It is characterized by that.
[0011]
(3) In the afterpulse removal method according to (1) or (2), the afterpulse removal method according to
(4) In the after-pulse removal method according to (1) to (3), the control means includes a step of setting the reference value to a time at which generation of the after-pulse can be ignored.
[0012]
(5) In the afterpulse elimination method according to any one of (1) to (4), the control unit sets the reference value together with the detection time, and a time difference from the immediately preceding detection time is equal to or greater than the reference value. Only the detection time is determined to be valid, and the photon detection value at that time is stored in the storage means.
(6) In a single photon detection device including a single photon detector using an avalanche photodiode as a light receiving element, a detection time at an arbitrary time interval in which a photon and an after pulse can be recorded is set, and a photon is generated based on the detection time. Control that records only the detection time longer than a reference value that arbitrarily adjusts the time difference from the previous detection time according to the operating conditions and element characteristics of the single photon detection means Means are provided.
[0013]
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
A basic embodiment of the present invention will be described in detail below.
The single photon detection device of the present invention is provided with single photon detection means using an avalanche photodiode as a light receiving element, executes a calculation algorithm for removing an after pulse of the single photon detector, and based on the calculation result. Is provided with a control means comprising a microcomputer for performing predetermined control and outputting to a predetermined input / output device (I / O), the control means comprising a CPU, a memory, and an I / O interface, and the scheduled detection time is indicated by the control means. Is stored in advance in the storage means, and the single photon detection means is set to operate only at the scheduled detection time, and the detection time timing means is used to confirm that the photons are detected without mistake at the scheduled detection time. Provide and configure.
[0014]
The calculation algorithm for afterpulse removal records all detection times including photons and afterpulses, and then re-stores only detection times whose time difference from the previous photon detection time is longer than a preset reference value in the storage device. Store. This is the order in which photons are first detected and then afterpulses are detected, so that the detection time next to the first photon time within the measurement period has a very close relationship with the generation of afterpulses. Because. Therefore, the reference value is set to a time delayed by a time that the generation of the after pulse can be ignored.
[0015]
(Example)

The apparatus of FIG. 4 executes a calculation algorithm for performing single-photon detection means 1 comprising a single-photon detector for performing photon detection, a
[0016]
(Operation)
The control means 3 refers to the scheduled detection time stored in the storage means 4 and operates the single photon detection means 1 only at the scheduled detection time. In order to confirm that the photons are detected without mistake at the scheduled detection time, the detection time obtained by measuring the output of the single photon detection means 1 by the time measuring means 2 is stored in the storage means 4. The detection time is continuously stored in the

(Calculation algorithm)
FIG. 5 is a flowchart of the calculation algorithm.
(Step 1) The calculation algorithm is started.
(Step 2) A reference value Tap is input. The reference value is a time that allows generation of afterpulses to be ignored, but can be arbitrarily adjusted according to operating conditions and device characteristics.
(Step 3) The operation of assigning Ti, i = 1, 2, 3,..., N to the n detection time data stored in the storage means 4 is performed. The detection time data is assigned to Ti from the earliest detection time.
[0018]
(Step 4) Initialization is performed by substituting zero into variables i and j to be used.
(Step 5) The variable i is incremented by one.
(Step 6) If the time difference between the detection time Ti + 1 and the previous detection time Ti is longer than the reference value Tap set in
(Step 7) The variable j is incremented by 1, and the detection time Ti + 1 validated in Step 6 is substituted for Tj.
[0019]
(Step 8) It is determined whether or not the variable i + 1 matches the total number n of detection time data. If they match (YES), there is no more detection time data, so the process moves to step 9. If they do not match (NO), detection time data still remains, so the process returns to step 5 to repeat a series of operations.
(Step 9) Since only the detection time whose time difference from the previous detection time in Step 6 is longer than the reference value set in advance is substituted for Ti, i = 1, 2, 3,. 4 is stored again. At this time, j is the total number of detection times validated in step 6.
(Step 10) All the operations are finished, and the calculation algorithm is finished.
[0020]
FIG. 6 shows the result of applying the above algorithm to remove the after pulse shown in FIG.
FIG. 6 (a) shows the scheduled detection time, FIG. 6 (b) shows a detection signal including an after pulse, and FIG. 6 (c) shows a detection signal of the present invention that has succeeded in removing the after pulse. .
If the afterpulse removal method of the present invention is applied, afterpulses are completely removed as shown in FIG.
[0021]
