【0056】
以上、説明した動作は制御手段、例えばCPU(Central Processing Unit)により制御される。
【0057】

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a developing device that develops an electrostatic latent image formed on a latent image carrier using a developer and an image forming apparatus including the developing device, and more particularly, to transport the developer using a traveling wave electric field. The present invention relates to a developing device using a mechanism that performs the above and an image forming apparatus including the developing device.
[0002]
[Prior art]
As a developing device applied to an image forming apparatus using an electrophotographic process such as a copying machine, a printer, and a facsimile, a two-component developing device using a magnet brush, a developing roller using a one-component developer with a blade, etc. There is known a method in which a developing layer is pressed to form a thin layer and contacted with a photoconductor as an image carrier, and development is in practical use.
[0003]
On the other hand, non-contact developing devices that perform development without bringing the developer carrier into contact with the image carrier are attracting attention, and methods using the powder cloud method, jumping method, and electric field curtain (traveling wave electric field) are proposed. Has been.
[0004]
As a method using an electric field curtain, for example, there is a developing device disclosed in Japanese Patent No. 2736537. This developing device is disposed below the conveyance path as a developer conveying unit that conveys the developer from the developer container toward the image carrier, and collects unnecessary developer from the image carrier. A recovery path as a developer recovery means and an electrode for development facing the image carrier and facing downward are provided at the end of the image carrier in the transport path.
[0005]
An electrode for generating an electric field curtain action is embedded in the transfer section, and the developer is stirred and charged by the electric field curtain action to be transferred to the development position. After the developer conveyed to the development position moves to the image carrier side by the development electric field due to the surface charge of the image carrier and the development bias applied to the development electrode, the electrostatic latent image is developed. The developer that has not adhered to the image carrier side falls from the developing electrode, proceeds to the recovery path, is excited, and is recovered in the developer accommodating portion.
[0006]
With this configuration, the developer can be transported and the electrostatic latent image can be developed without using mechanical power, and the transfer means between the developer container and the image carrier can be greatly increased. It is shown that the print output device itself can be reduced in size and thickness.
[0007]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, the above prior art has the following problems.
1) Since the transport unit / developing electrode and the collecting unit are individually formed, the developer attached to the developing electrode may remain without dropping. If the developer remains on the development electrode, the charge leaks and the charge amount decreases, and fog may occur in the next development process.
2) Even if the developer falls from the developing electrode to the collecting unit, the developer may bounce on the collecting unit and cause toner scattering to contaminate the inside of the apparatus.
3) Although it has been shown that the print output device can be downsized, both the transport unit and the collection unit need to have a certain length, which is not sufficient for downsizing.
[0008]
The present invention provides a developing device that can be reduced in size by accommodating toner directly in the developing device main body, transporting the toner using a traveling wave electric field, and performing development, and an image forming apparatus including the developing device. Is.
[0009]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to solve the above problems, the present invention forms a traveling wave electric field by applying a voltage containing a multiphase AC component to a plurality of electrodes arranged at predetermined intervals, and develops the traveling wave electric field. A developer conveying means for conveying the developer is provided, and as the developer conveying means, a developing area at the closest position to the image carrier, a conveying section upstream of the developing area, and a downstream side of the developing area In this configuration, the developer is transported sequentially so that the developer does not remain in the development area and the developer does not fall into the collection unit and contaminate the inside of the device. It is a thing.
[0010]
The shape of the developer conveying means may be a flat plate member, but if the flat plate member is attached to the open portion on the image carrier side of the apparatus main body in a protruding shape that swells toward the image carrier, that is, If the developer conveying means is attached with a curvature and the developing area is formed at the closest position, the developer can be reliably conveyed, developed and collected.
[0011]
In forming the protruding shape of the flat plate member, it does not matter whether the flat plate member has elasticity, but when developing using the contact development method, the elastic member is used as described below. It can be brought into soft contact with the carrier, and the contact pressure with the image carrier can be easily adjusted by its curvature.
[0012]
As a developing method in this case, as described above, any of a contact developing method in which development is performed in contact with the image carrier and a non-contact developing method in which development is performed in a non-contact manner with the image carrier can be employed. Therefore, the “closest position” of the image carrier on which the development area is formed and the developer conveying means is a concept including not only the case where they are not in contact but also the case where they are in contact.
[0013]
When the contact developing method is employed, if an air gap is provided between the developer conveying means and a support member fixed to the apparatus main body to support the developer conveying means, the elasticity of the developer conveying means is used to make an image. It can be brought into very soft contact with the carrier. When the non-contact development method is employed, if the developer conveying means is attached in close contact with the support member, the distance between the development area and the image carrier is constant, and reliable development is possible.
[0014]
Since the developer conveying means conveys the developer by a traveling wave electric field, the developer can be charged or collected even by itself. However, the developer conveying means has a predetermined amount of the developer. Developer charging means for charging the developer by applying an electric charge and supplying the developer to the developer conveying means, and developer recovery for collecting the developer that did not contribute to the development from the image carrier side into the apparatus main body. If a sealing means for preventing the leakage of the developer is additionally provided on the downstream side of the developer charging means in the developer conveying direction, the developer can be reliably charged, collected and prevented from leaking.
[0015]
A charging roller can be exemplified as the developer charging means, a toner collecting roller can be exemplified as the developer collecting means, and a blade can be exemplified as the sealing means.
[0016]
In the above developing apparatus, a space surrounded by the developer charging means, the developer collecting means, the support member of the developer conveying means, and the wall surface of the apparatus main body is defined as a developer accommodating portion, and the developer is accommodated in the developer accommodating portion. Thus, the number of parts can be simplified and the volume of the entire apparatus can be reduced, and the size can be reduced.
[0017]
Furthermore, if the electrodes of the developer charging means or developer collecting means and the developer conveying means and the voltage applied to the electrodes are set as follows, it becomes possible to stably convey and collect the developer and increase the conveying force.
[0018]
That is, if the electrode of the developer conveying means is disposed at a position where the developer charging means comes into contact or closest, the developer supplied from the developer charging means can be stably conveyed.
[0019]
In this case, if the electrode width in the vicinity of the developer charging means is made narrower than the electrode width in other regions, the region where the electric field in the developer transport direction is weak on the electrode is reduced, and the developer can be transported smoothly.
[0020]
If the pitch between the electrodes in the vicinity of the developer charging means is formed wider than the pitch between the electrodes in other regions, and the applied voltage to the electrodes in this region is set higher than the electrode applied voltages in the other regions, the traveling wave The effective range of the electric field formed by the generating electrode is expanded, the developer conveying force is increased, and the developer conveying amount can be increased.
[0021]
On the other hand, if the electrode of the developer conveying means is disposed at a position where the developer collecting means is in contact with or closest to the developer conveying means, the effective range of the electric field generated by the traveling wave generating electrode is expanded and does not contribute to development. The developer can be reliably transported and recovered to the position where the developer recovery means acts.
[0022]
In this case, if the applied voltage to the electrode in the vicinity of the developer collecting means is set lower than the electrode applied voltage in the other areas, the developer transport speed by the traveling wave generating electrode is reduced, and the developer becomes the developer collecting means. It is possible to prevent scattering of the developer caused by the collision.
[0023]
Since the image forming apparatus includes the developing device adopting any of the configurations described above, it is possible to provide an image forming apparatus that is prevented from scattering of the developer and has good maintainability. In addition, since the developer is supplied, conveyed, and collected stably, it is possible to output a high-quality image in which fogging is suppressed. Furthermore, since the developing device is downsized, the image forming apparatus can be downsized.

The values of the alternating voltage and frequency may be set appropriately depending on the shape of the traveling wave generating electrode element, the toner conveyance speed, the toner material used, and the like.

In addition, this invention is not limited to the said embodiment, Of course, many corrections and changes can be added within the scope of the present invention. For example, in the above-described embodiment, the configuration in which the traveling wave electrode is arranged to the vicinity of the charging roller and the toner collecting roller is illustrated for the toner conveying member in which the toner conveying unit and the toner collecting unit are integrated. Of course, the positional relationship between the roller and the traveling wave electrode can be applied regardless of whether or not the toner conveying member is integrated. In addition, the structure of the traveling wave generating electrode and the relationship between the electrode pitch and the electrode applied voltage described in the above embodiment can of course be applied to the traveling wave generating electrode, either alone or in combination.
[0084]
【The invention's effect】
As is apparent from the above description, according to the present invention, the developer transport means for transporting the developer by the traveling wave electric field is divided into the development area at the closest position to the image carrier and the developer transport from the development area. The developer is transported sequentially by integrating the transport section upstream in the direction and the collection section downstream in the developer transport direction from the development area, so that the developer remains in the development area. In addition, the occurrence of fog and the contamination in the apparatus can be prevented without causing the developer to fall into the collection unit and contaminating the apparatus.
[0085]
In addition, a gap is provided between the developer conveying means and the support member fixed to the apparatus main body so that the developer conveying means is in very soft contact with the image carrier, and mechanical stress is not applied to the toner. Development can be performed. Further, non-contact development in which development is performed in a non-contact state with the image carrier is possible by attaching the developer conveying means in close contact with a support member fixed to the developing device.
[0086]
Furthermore, by disposing the electrode of the developer conveying means at a position where the developer charging means is in contact with or closest to the developer conveying means, the developer supplied from the developer charging means can be stably conveyed. it can. In this case, if the electrode width of the developer conveying member in the vicinity of the developer charging means is made narrower than the electrode width in other regions, the developer can be stably conveyed, and all electrode widths are reduced. Compared to the case, it is possible to reduce the manufacturing cost when manufacturing the developer conveying member.
[0087]
Further, the pitch between the electrodes of the developer conveying means in the vicinity of the developer charging means is made wider than the pitch between the electrodes in other areas, and the voltage applied to the electrodes in this area is set higher than the voltage applied to the electrodes in the other areas. If set, the developer conveyance amount in the vicinity of the charging means can be increased.
[0088]
On the other hand, by disposing the electrode of the developer conveying means at a position where the developer collecting means is in contact with or closest to the developer conveying means, the conveyed developer can be stably collected by the developer collecting means. it can. In this case, if the applied voltage to the electrode of the developer conveying member in the vicinity of the developer collecting means is set lower than the applied voltage to the electrode in the other region, the developer conveying speed is reduced and the developer is recovered by the developer. Toner scattering caused by collision with the means can be prevented.
[0089]
Further, in the image forming apparatus provided with the developing device having any one of the above configurations, the developer can be prevented from being scattered, and the maintainability is improved. In addition, since the developer is supplied, conveyed, and collected stably, it is possible to output a high-quality image in which fogging is suppressed. Furthermore, since the developing device is downsized, the image forming apparatus can be downsized.
