Abstract
Description
【0001】
液晶表示装置は、CRT(Cathode Ray Tube)、PDP(Plasma Display Panel)、あるいはEL(Electro Luminescence)といった他のディスプレイとは異なり、液晶そのものは発光せずに、特定の光源からの光の透過光量を調節することによって文字や画像を表示する。
【0003】
【0036】
導光体24は、例えばPMMA(polymethylmetacrylate) 等を用い、射出成形により形成することができる。
透明電極15aは、例えばITO(Indium Tin Oxide)を材料とする。
θ=90°−α−β

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention is used by being disposed between an object to be illuminated and an observer, and irradiates the object with light and transmits the reflected light so that the observer can visually recognize the reflected light from the object to be illuminated. The present invention relates to a front illuminating device configured to be used and a reflective liquid crystal display device including the front illuminating device as an auxiliary light source.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Unlike other displays such as CRT (Cathode Ray Tube), PDP (Plasma Display Panel), or EL (Electro Luminescence), the liquid crystal display device does not emit liquid crystal itself but transmits light from a specific light source. Display characters and images by adjusting.
[0003]
Conventional liquid crystal display devices (hereinafter referred to as LCD: Liquid Crystal Display) can be roughly classified into a transmissive LCD and a reflective LCD. In a transmissive LCD, a surface emitting light source such as a fluorescent tube or an EL as a light source (backlight) is disposed on the back of a liquid crystal cell.
[0004]
On the other hand, the reflective LCD has an advantage that it does not require a backlight and consumes less power because it displays using ambient light. Further, in a very bright place exposed to direct sunlight, the light emitting display and the transmissive LCD are almost invisible, whereas the reflective LCD looks clearer. For this reason, the reflective LCD is applied to portable information terminals and mobile computers, for which demand has been increasing in recent years.
[0005]
However, the reflective LCD has the following problems. In other words, since the reflective LCD uses ambient light, the display brightness depends very much on the surrounding environment, and the display may not be recognized at all in the dark, such as at night. In particular, in the reflective LCD using a color filter for colorization and the reflective LCD using a polarizing plate, the above-described problem is significant, and auxiliary illumination is necessary in case sufficient ambient light cannot be obtained. Become.
[0006]
However, a reflection type LCD has a reflection plate installed on the back side of the liquid crystal cell, and a backlight such as a transmission type LCD cannot be used. A device called a transflective LCD using a half mirror as a reflector has also been proposed, but its display characteristics are halfway between the transmissive type and the reflective type, and it is considered difficult to put into practical use.
[0007]
Therefore, a front light system has been conventionally proposed as an auxiliary illumination for a reflective LCD in the case where the surrounding is dark, which is arranged in front of a liquid crystal cell. This front light system generally includes a light guide and a light source disposed on a side surface of the light guide. The light source light incident from the side surface of the light guide travels inside the light guide, is reflected by the shape created on the surface of the light guide, and is emitted to the liquid crystal cell side. The emitted light is dimmed according to the display information while passing through the liquid crystal cell, and reflected by a reflector disposed on the back side of the liquid crystal cell, thereby passing through the light guide again to the viewer side. Emitted. Thereby, the observer can recognize the display even when the ambient light amount is insufficient.
[0008]
Such a front light is disclosed in, for example, Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 5-158034 and SID DIGEST P.375 (1995).
[0009]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
Here, the operation principle of the front light system disclosed in SID DIGEST P.375 (1995) will be briefly described with reference to FIG. In the front light system, one side surface of the

The conventional front light system has the following problems.
(1) As shown in FIG. 52, light that cannot reach the
(2) The shape of the
[0015]
These problems are common to most of the conventional front light systems, and it is desired to improve the utilization efficiency of the light source light.
[0016]
The present invention has been made in view of the above problems, and an object of the present invention is to improve the use efficiency of light source light and to enable uniform and brighter illumination on an object to be illuminated. Another object of the present invention is to provide a reflective liquid crystal display device using the front illumination device.
[0017]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to solve the above-described problems, a front illumination device according to the present invention includes a light source and a light guide disposed in front of an object to be illuminated, and the light guide includes light from the light source. , A first emission surface that emits light toward the object to be illuminated, and a second emission that faces the first emission surface and emits reflected light from the object to be illuminated. And an inclined portion that mainly reflects light from the light source toward the first emission surface, and the first emission of the light guide is formed on the second emission surface. On the surface,Prevents interference or diffraction between the image at the inclined part and the reflected image by reflected light. An antireflection means is arranged.
[0018]
Usually, on the first light exit surface of the light guide, light from the inclined portion formed on the second light exit surface is reflected and becomes reflected light. Due to the generation of the reflected light, a reflected image is formed from the first emission surface to the second emission surface of the light guide. As a result, the reflected image and the image at the inclined portion interfere with each other or are diffracted, and unevenness of luminance distribution and rainbow color spectroscopy occur on the surface of the object to be illuminated as viewed from the observer.
[0019]
However, according to the above configuration, since the front illumination device includes the antireflection means, it is possible to suppress the generation of reflected light that is generated when the incident light from the inclined portion is reflected by the first emission surface. . Therefore, it is possible to prevent interference or diffraction between the image at the inclined portion that acts as the minute light source portion and the reflected image due to the reflected light. Therefore, it is possible to prevent unevenness in luminance distribution on the display observed on the viewer side (second emission surface) and generation of rainbow-colored spectrum.
[0020]
Moreover, since the commercially available antireflection film (antireflection film) can be used as it is as the antireflection means, an increase in the manufacturing cost of the front illumination device can be suppressed. Therefore, an inexpensive front illumination device can be provided.
[0021]
Another front illumination device according to the present invention has a light source and a light guide disposed in front of an object to be illuminated in order to solve the above-described problem, and the light guide is formed from the light source. An incident surface on which the light is incident, a first emission surface that emits light toward the object to be illuminated, and a second surface that faces the first emission surface and emits reflected light from the object to be illuminated. And an inclined portion that mainly reflects light from the light source toward the first emission surface, and is formed on the second emission surface. The distance between each of the inclined portions of the two exit surfaces is substantially uniform, and the first exit surface of the light guide isPrevents interference or diffraction between the image at the inclined part and the reflected image by reflected light. An antireflection means is arranged.
[0022]
Also with the above configuration, it is possible to suppress the occurrence of reflected light generated by the incident light from the inclined portion being reflected by the first exit surface by the antireflection means.
[0023]
In the front illumination device according to the present invention, in addition to the above configuration, the antireflection means is bonded to the light guide with an adhesive having a refractive index substantially equal to the refractive index of the light guide. It is a feature.
[0024]
According to the above configuration, since the antireflection means is adhered by the adhesive having a refractive index substantially equal to the refractive index of the second light guide, the input / output conditions of the light in the second light guide are set. The antireflection effect can be improved with almost no change.
[0025]
The front illumination device according to the present invention is characterized in that, in addition to the above configuration, the incident surface is present on a side surface of the light guide.
[0026]
According to said structure, there exists an advantage that a light source cannot be directly seen from an observer, when light injects from the side surface of a light guide. Thereby, the front illumination device is obtained in which the direct light from the light source does not affect the image of the object to be illuminated and a clear image of the object to be illuminated is obtained.
[0027]
The front illumination device according to the present invention is characterized in that in addition to the above-described configuration, the front illumination device further includes a condensing unit that causes light from a light source to enter only the incident surface.
[0028]
According to said structure, since the loss of light source light can further be reduced, the utilization efficiency of light source light further improves and the front illuminating device as a brighter surface light source is implement | achieved.
[0029]
In order to solve the above-described problems, the reflective liquid crystal display device according to the present invention is characterized in that the front illumination device having the above-described configuration is disposed on the entire surface.
[0030]
Thus, for example, when there is a sufficient amount of ambient light such as outdoors during the day, the front illumination device is used with the light turned off, while when the sufficient amount of ambient light cannot be obtained, the front illumination device is turned on. Can be used. As a result, it is possible to provide a reflective liquid crystal display device that can always realize a bright and high-quality display regardless of the surrounding environment.

【The invention's effect】
As described above, the front illumination device according to the present invention has a configuration in which the antireflection means is disposed on the first light exit surface of the light guide.
[0231]
According to said structure, generation | occurrence | production of the reflected light which arises when the incident light from an inclination part is reflected by a 1st output surface can be suppressed. Therefore, it is possible to prevent interference or diffraction between the image at the inclined portion that acts as the minute light source portion and the reflected image due to the reflected light. Therefore, there is an effect that it is possible to prevent unevenness in luminance distribution on the display observed on the viewer side (second emission surface) and generation of iridescent spectrum.
[0232]
In addition, as described above, the reflective liquid crystal display device according to the present invention has a configuration in which the front illumination device having the above-described configuration is disposed over the entire surface.
[0233]
Thus, for example, when there is a sufficient amount of ambient light such as outdoors during the day, the front illumination device is used with the light turned off, while when the sufficient amount of ambient light cannot be obtained, the front illumination device is turned on. Can be used. As a result, there is an effect that it is possible to provide a reflective liquid crystal display device that can always realize a bright and high-quality display regardless of the surrounding environment.
